N17 Sanford’s Opere Troupe from @larris-
burg, which periormed in this place last
McPiay and Tuesday nights, drew a trewen-
duous crowd, filling the spacious court room
0 its utmost cxtent. Probably, eight hua-
dred-persons weve present on Monday even-
ing, of all canks, sizes, sorts and colors. fn
ils way the performance was good enough,
and if the people of Bellefonte were ‘gulled’
a little, they deseryed it. The idea of church
members and the religious community in
general, patronizing such a performance 18
simply a disgraeo to the profession of reli-
gion. Tt is no excuse for them to say that
they did not know what it was to be, fur
they dic. Handbille and programmes stat-
ing the performances were circulated for
days beforehand, and they well knew that
there was zs good wn it. Their sons, broth-
ers or friends, wounded aud suffering in the
army, dying. perhaps, without a prayer be-
ing offered up for the welfare of their depar-
ting spirits, could not claim a thought fiom
ean,
He is a gent] «-°

these pretended Christians, while they had
the privilege of grzing on and Iaughing a
a parcrl of low negro performances. Shame
on such principles.
Our Commissioners certainly did wrong
in permitttng this company of nigger dar-
cers to hold their revel in the Cour’-onsze,
notwithstanding they were solicited to do
80 by leading members of the Churches in
this place. The Court-House was not built
for such purposes, and we hape it will never
again be disgraced by such a performance
If the people of Bellefonte wanta room to
have shows in, let them build one, or get
the churches whose members induce them
