Mitchell, of How. ard, and one of our contributors, paid us a visit this week, Willis a good writer, a sound Democrat, and a bully fellow. Ie would be a good companion for some young lady to jog along through this life with, but we hope he .won’t leave the pleasures of bachelordom for awhile yet. Pile in, Will, you and jJack give the Repub’s fits down your way, and we'll try and make them toe the mark up here. 0 Court Week —Notwita standing the un- favorable weather during the first part of the week, Court has been well attended and bu- siness is going off briskly. At present wri ting a splendid snow is upon the ground, and we presume the good sleighing which it will undoubtedly make, will bring a host of £)lks t) town. A number of our subseri- bers have been in to see us and made us happy by paying up their dues, and we hope to see them continue to come ii. Bac ions [77 This week we publish two articles fiom the pen of our talented contributor, J. P. M., of Howard, Pa., the one on our first page, and the other on our second. They should be read in connection, though either of them is complete in ‘itself. The Watch- ntributory are just beginning to i wo owe pride to he t Oi lg er which we present to our readers tiis week We do not expect it t~ stop here, but intend that it shall go on urtil the Waschman becomes the best original paper in the State. 0 Rr Reaving AssocratioN. —This body met at the Arbitra ion Room on Saturday and Tuesday evenings last, and organized permanently by the adoption of a Constitu- tion and By-Laws and the election of offi cers, The officers, with the excep tion of the Librarian, who is appointed weekly by the President, were chosen for a period of two months, and are as fo'lows : President—J. W. Furey. Secretary— Isaac Mitchel. T'reasure-— John W. Morris. Librarian- - Allison Iaupt. hans ginal, wat Thus this association appears to be organ- 17¢d; and we hope it may succeed in 1ts very laudable and important urdertaking. We weuld urge upon our citizens the pro- priety of encouraging and countenancing this moyement and of extending to it such aid as it may seem (o require. A room has been rented in Mr. Reynold’s Iron Front and committees appointed to see that it be furnished and put in order as soon as pos- sible. 0 Tne SuNpAY Scu00L ANNIVERSARY which came off at the Court House, on Wednes- day evening last, was attended by a large and highly appreciative audience, who evin- ced their gratification by numerous bursts of applause. We understand that the schol realized about thirty dollars from the pro- ceeds, which, in these hard times, will be quite an important addi ion to its treasury. The anniversary exercises were well con- ducted throughout and some of the pieces were more than ordinarily well performed. To Rev. Mr. Bowman, Mr, Stitzer, Mr. Yea- ger and Mrs. Ward, the community is main- ly indebted for the entertainment which has passed oft so pleasantly, and to them, oa behalf of the public, we beg to return thanks, and congratulate them on their suc- cess. The musical portion of the entertainment was under the control of Mr. Henry Yeager and wasonc of the mest pleasing features of the evening. Some of the pieces sung: were very beautiful aud reflected credit up- an all the performers. “Lorena,” ¢ Send Them llome Tenderly,” and *¢ Ellsworth’s Dirge,” were, probably, the best pieces per- formed, but all were very good and did credit to the good ju'gment and musical taste of Mr. Yeager. By the way, we be- lieve it is the intention of Mr. Yeager to es- tablish a singing school, to which, we pre- sume, all lovers of goed music will be sure to go. On fig whole, the ¢* Anniversary,” pass- ed oft creditably, and we were glad to see so much int rest wanifested on the part of our citizens in its success The annual re- currence of these exercises is pleasant as well as profitable, and we hope this one will not be the last of the kind. We had intended to notice particularly, some of the pieces and performers, but it wight, perhaps. be unwise to mention the fow, where nit did so well, and. therefore, we wil nol atiempt to carry out that inten- tion. We cannot, however, fortear to say a word in commendation of the last speech of the occasion, entitled ** The Responsibilities of the American People,” by Thomas J. Kurtz. We feel a degree of pride at Tom’s success, as he is a member of the typo- araphical fraternity of the Watchman office, aiid his speech was really well delivered. mE i ops TE RE a a 0 Slagh-tells, girls and buflalo-robes | may now get ready to be used, for twclre inches of snow don’t come every day, and we know our yourg folks are itching for sleigh-rides. Although tke ground is still soft underneath, yet we are momentarily expecting a ‘ freeze,” and then, ye gods what sleighing ! 0 07= We are pained to announce the death of Commodore M'Kean Buchanan, son of Gen. Geo. Buchanan, of this county, who died at New Orleans recently from the ef- fects of a wound in the head. We have not yet learned the particulars of his daath, but will give them as soon as received. o- 17> The Lutheran church at Centre 1lal} will be dedicated, on Sunday, the 22nd day f February. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church for years, and was highly respected by all who knew him., He was taken sud- denly ill with heart disease, and together with old age, we were robbed of our father, and the clods of the valley ehurch yard hides from our view the one we loved ; but we know that he is now enjoying the riches of heaven, and tasting the sweets of the Para- dise prepared for the finally faithful.
