Jorn H, Stover, one of the editors of the Central Press, and now connected with the army of the Potomac, was in town last week. The Major looks hearty, and seems to stand the war right well. 0—— 177 A Bain belonging to Wm. Thomp- son of Centre Furnace was burnt on Men. duy night last. A largs quaniity of grain and several cows were consumed. The or- zin of the fire is not known, but is supposed to be the ac of an incendiary. 0 ee T7= We noticed on our streets the other day, Geo. D. Pifer, Esq., of the army of | the Potomaé, ard a former resident of this 1 enrned to the sick but la Mr, PL. we believe £10 ODUAY ad been was convalesciig. 0 077 During the past week we have added eighteen new Subscribers to our list. Our friends who are working to extend the cir- culation of the Watchman will please except | our most sincere thanks, and if ever it comes ! within our power to repay them for their kindness we shall do it cheerfully. 17 A destructive fire occurred in Lewis town on the night of the 11 h inst., we un- derstand, in the stable belonging to Mayes'y Iotel, and could not be stopped until the flames had consumed seven stables, ten hisses and other property, to a considerable amount, ee 7 Friend I. N. A. we are sorry to in- form you thar there is not a No. of last | weeks issue except the regalar file papers | left in the office. Although we worked off several more quires than usual they were all ordered before your kind letter was received. Consider us under many obligations for the fine list of subscribers sent us. 0 177 We learn through Mr. Willard, the Gentlemanly conductor on the Bald Eagle Valley Ruil Road, that the up train narrow _ ly escaped a serious accident at Bald Eagl, Furnace. Aa oar team, crossing the track was struck by the Locomotive, killing the horses, and injuring the driver. Persons niong the Rail Road should be careful. —0 ReTurNED.— Lieut. Neil Harrold, of this place, who belongs to the 45ih Reg. P, V., has returned to his home, having resigned his commission. Neil looks good and, we have no doubt, feels good in being once more among his old friends in Centre coun- ty. le has had qaite a campaign of it, having been in the army ever since the war commenced. We congratulate him on his safe return. 8 On Tuesday night last, about eight o'clock the quietness of ou town was disturbed by the alarming cry of ‘fire.” The distruc- tive conflagrations that Lave lately taken place in Lock Haven and Lewistown, arous- ed the fears of all that Bellfonte was to be visited dy the same frightful scenes, and every one able to move, ran, helter-skelter, to the scene of danger, which proved, how- ever, to be nothing but the burning out of the chimney, belonging to one of old Abes “free Americans of African decent,” *‘no- body being hurt,” the crowd quietly dis- persed. Ome (7 Price, the ‘celebrated’ horse-tamer, was in town this week, and drew quita a crowd, of all sorts and sizes. What the abilities of this man are, in the horse-tam- ing line, we are not able to say. as his per- formances, did not come under our pefson- al observation, save in one or two instances when the animals were not very unmanage- abie, Report speaks favorably of him, how- ever, and those who have fractious horses or mules might give him a trial, This is the age i humbuggery, and if this man should turn ‘out a humbug, we should not be a: all surprised. We doabt very much if another Rarey is living. 0 = Since the rerfoval of Gen. McClellan, the army of the Potoriac, under the com- mand, of Gen. Burnside, has achiéved noih- ing worthy of notice, except a most disas- trous defeat at Fredericksburg. But not withstanding this calamity to our drm, Gen. Buinside thinks ho will be able to re- trieve the disaster as s.on as he receives a supply of goods and provisions fiom the celebrated establishment of the Hoffer Bro- thers, ir this place, which is now being for- warded to him as rapidly as possible. And we would remark here that these gentlemen are in weekly receipt of goods from the cheapest and best markets in the country, and are now engaged in selling wlth ‘he utost unexampled rapidity.
