IOCAT: MATTERS,
Triste of Respect.—On motion, the
W. M. appointed Brothers Jno. T. Johnson,
Joseph Green and Wm. P. Wilson, a Com-
anittee to draft Resolutions expressive of the
feelings of the members of this Lodge, in
regard to the death of our late Brother,
I{arpuaN P. PETRIREN.
The Committee reported the following
Preamble and Resolutions, which were
unanimously adopted :
Whereas, The members of this Lodge
have heard, with emotions of profound sor- |
row, of the death of our late friend anc
brother, Lieut. ITakbuan P. Prerricex, of |
Company “BE,” Fifth Yeonsylvania Reserves, |
who fell while bravely fighting. the battles |
of his country ; and as honorable tributes
of respect to the dead are deemed the <urert
evidence of the regard with which their
aemory will he cherished by the living, we
desire to place on record a faithful expres-
sion of our sense of the loss xastaived oy
onr Order in our brather’s untimely demise,
and also to express our sympathy with the
feelings of hig bereaved relatives aud
friends. Therefore,
Resolved, That in the death of Brother |
Pirrikes our Lodge has lost a worthy and
devoted member; the community, a citizen
whose integrity won for him the respect and
esteem of all who knew him, and the coun-
try, an cfficient officer and brave soldier,
Resolved, That we tender to the relatives
of our lamented brother, assarvance of our
strong and earnest sympathy with them in
this, their hour of mourning, knowing that
the strength to bear their afflictivn must
come from Him who sent it; and though
they drink deeply of the cup of rurrow,
their lasting comfort must coms from resiy-
nation to the will of thae merciful Father
who is too wise to err, and too god to be
unkind,
Resoleed, That & copy of thexe Resolu-
tions he presented to the family of the de
ceased, nud that they be cntercl upon the
MWlinute of the Lodge, and also be publish-
‘ed in the town papers.

community was much started, on Wednes !
day morning, 10 learn of the death of Bood
¥alentine, Esq. onc of the oldest and most
respected citizens of our town. Mr. Valen- |
tine. expired very suddenly, basing, up ull
<en o'clock on Tuesday evening, enjoyed his
usual good health. We learn he was at the |
Pelegraph Office at that hour, but soon after |
his return home, was seized with a mortal
illness which terminated his lorg and useful
life in a few hours, He died about 2v’clock !
on Wednes hy morning. We understand it
wag Mr. Valentine's intention toghave gone
to Baltimore on Wednesday morning, and
that he had made arrangements to that ef
fect. His pleasant anticipations were, sud~
by the cold band of
denly over hrown
death.
The funeral took place on Tharsday af
te noon in the midst of a pouring ram, and,
considering the state of the weather, was
largely attended, thus giving evidence of the
cespect in which Mr Valentine was bell by
his community. In his death the society
of Friends, to which he belonged, loses one
of its most consistent and upright members,
and the community a most estimable man
and a good citizen.

Sercrant E. C. BLush, a gallant soldier
of the 6th Regiment U. S. Cavalry, and
who, for the last nine or ten months has had
his family in this place, having received an
honorable dischar ge from the service on ace
count of a soreness in one of his limbs,
caused by constant exercise in the saddle,
left this place on Friday morning last. for
his wife's home in Kentucky. The Ser-
geant has been in the service for almost two
years, and is a brave, honorable, high-toned
man. His brief sojourn in our town gained
him hosts of friends, and his departure was
witnessed with regret by all who had er joy-
ed his acquaintance. Our best wishes will
attend him wherever he may go or in what
ever calling he may engage. A perfect
\leman and a gallant soldier, he is enti-

10GAN SarooN.—This well known Es-
tablishment is located on Allegheny street,
in Reynolds’ Tron Front, and is kept by that
most enterprising of men, Mr. Georor W.
Downing, Everybody in town knows **Lo~
gan,” as he 1s generally called—and know,
also, that he keeps the best accomodations
for his customers of any other Eating Sas
loon in town —always having on hand the
finest lot of fresh oysters and other edibles,
wkich are served up in such a style, that
the greatest epicure in the country would
relish with a good rrace.
In addition to the Eating Depariment
George keeps a splendid Billiard Table, on
which the Amateurs of our town are con:
tinnally playing —having such a desire, after
once taking up a cue, and playing a game of
two, that they Lardly know when to put ig
down If our readers don’t believe this httle
bit of **history,”’ just let them step into his
Saloon, walk up to the counter, and say,
George, let me have a dozen oys ers ;" or,
| “George. 1 wish to engage the next table,”
and see how soon you will be accommodat
ed. George wa clever fel ow and certainly
deserves to be encouraged.

Tue EnecrioN.—The election on Tuesday
passed off quietly, with the exceptionof a
couple of fights, in which, however, very
little damage wus done. . The whole Demo
cratic County ticket is elected by a large
majority, thus red. eming Old Centre once
more from the unhealthy ru e of Black Re
publicanism. Judge Hale, the Independent
candidate ‘or Congress, received nearly the
whole Democratic vote of this county, and
is consequently elected by a considerable
majority in the District.
Well may Democrats rejoice | They have
again prostrated the Abolition monster in
the dust, and thus vindicated the righteous
ness of their cause and the justness of their
principles. Our only regret is that there is
any doubt as to the result of the State elec
tion. From present appearances, the chance”
es are that the Republicans have elected
their State ticket We trust not, and live
in the hope that bet e- ncws may checr the
Gearts of the Democracy.
