An Indian officer has just published. from notes made by himself “on the spot during the rebellion of 1857, a ¢ History of the Seige of Delhi, with a Sketch of the Leading Events in the Panjaub.” Among the chief merits of this book is its thorough imparti- ality. He thinks pur government greatly to blame 1n many matters, and considers that Tord Hlalhousie’s policy was one of the main causes of the mutiny. ~ He bestows consid 1 se on his lordship for ability and resents the seizare of Oudeas a ¢ and an act of injustice, — The extreme peril of that step was pointed out to Lord Dalhousie by men of eminence and authority, but he would not listen to them. Then came the greased cartridges, in which the Hindoo soldiers thought they saw a design to destroy their caste. Added to this was the habit of treating the natives 1m a way hurtful to their ings and prejudi- ¢ s. From these causes, in the opinion of t .c author. arose the ticmendous and fright- {ul convulsion from which India has only just recovered, to pass into the equally ter- rible agony of famine. The * officer ”’ also es his countrymen for the vindictive spirit in which the rebellion was crushed out, and instances some dreadful cases of cruelty and injustice. Yet he telie no people would have evinced greater moderation after the atrocities committed by the Sepoys, while many nations would have shown less ; and he points to the readiness with which we have undertaken to feed the famine stricken people during the last four months, as a proof that we are worthy to rule India. Of the celebrated liero Nicholson, who was killed before Delhi, the author tells a most remarkabio story. He was so worshipped by the natives that a brotherhood of Fakirs and Hazara frontier canomzed him even dur- ing his life. They called themselves aficr Lis name, < Nikkul Seynees,” and their worship consisted in singing a kind of dirge, every verse of which ¢choed the refram, « (Goroo Nikkul Seyn.” On Nicholson's glo- rious full before Delhi, their leader declared Le could not live in a worn where there was wo ¢ Nikkul Seyn,” and going to his hut, de« strayed himself, cutting Lis throat from car 10 ea’ — N.Y.
