Precautions—Hints to Farmers,
The Legislatures of some of our States
have already recommended our farmers to
plant this year extraordinary quantities of
grain and grass. We hear from various
points that this has been and is being done:
Nothing should be neglected which will help
to make the staple articles of food abundant
during the next two years. Our farmers
should not only plant large crops of wheat
and corn, but they would do well for them-
gelves and for the country to cultivate, to
greater than ordinary extent, certain other
crops, the products of which are largely con-
sumed by soldiers and sailors
Beans and peas, dried, form an important
portion of the army and navy rations. They
are only second in importance to bread and
meat, and as help to a healthy variation of
food, nre of equal necessity. Large quanti-
ties of these articles will be needed for army
provisions, and it is yet time for our farmers
to prepare themselves to supply this demand.
Also, the farmers throughout the country
will do well to reserve their calves from the
butcher's knife. This is a point of great im-
portance. With a large army to support we
car.not too carefully look after the supply of
Deel. We suggest to our agricultural socie-
ties this matter. Many thousand calves are
sold and killed every month in this country.
Our farmers will find it profitable to raise all
the increase of their herds during the pre-
seut year at least; and this is a matter of
prudeice, by which patriotic stock raisers
and cattle owners can do very much to help
the cause of the Union, for which our brave
soldiers have gone to battle,
Hay, also, should be saved as much as
possible. It is un article much needed in
all campaigns ; and there is little doubt that
the operations of the rebels have heen em-
barrassed by the lack of it. The South has
always drawn its supply of hay from the
Northern and Eastern States. Three months
ago there were not five hundred bales of hay
in the States held by the mutineers. Great
armies cannot be moved without numerous
teams, and probably the lack of hay was one
sot unimportant reason for a certain slow-
ness of movement on the part of the rebel
army, which has surprised our people and
now alarms the traitors in Virginia.
Tebellion will not triumph for lack of pa-
triots to dispute its progress and put it to
flight from the land. But an army cando
nothing without supplies; and it must be
the care of those who remain at home to
spare no pains to provide the necessary sup-
plies for cur brethren who are doing battle
for the Union. Every bushel of corn, every
barrel of flour, every bag of beans and peas,
every tierce of beef and pork, every bale of
hay, that can be added to our erop this year
should be raised.—2N. I Post.

The Right time to cut Asparagus.
A Correspondent of the Farmer and Gard-
ner says :—Every lover of Asparagus must
deprecate the course pursued by most per-
song, and market gardeners in particular, in
regard to the time of cutting this delicious
vegetable. Tor many years my impressions
were that the whiter and better bleached
the stalks, the finer would be the flavor.
Besides this, the delicate appearance of a
well bleaclied bunch of asparagus, almost
naturally conveys the idea of tenderness
and juiciness. Now this is all a mistake,
as any person may prove by a single experi-
went. My plan is never cut asparagus uvn-
til, by exposure to the atmosphere, the
stalks have become green over the greater
portion of their length. The white or bleach-
od part is generally fibrous or woody and
tasteless.
sight at the table than that of a person draw-
ing tough asparagus through his teeth,
sucking off such parts as may be tender,
aud leaving the uneatalle parts on or, be-
side his plate. This may all be remedied,
try a little precaution in rezard to the time
of cutting. To have asparagus in full flavor,
tender and juicy, it must be cut when the
stalks are just sufficiently greened to break
off’ short, like, a snap-short bean. When
the crowns have expanded, the proper peri-
od is past, for although the whole stalk then
becomes green it also becomes fibrous and
tough.
It is said, that where it is desirable io
have the asparagus retain a fresh green ap-
pearance, when served for the table, this
can be accomplished by the addition of a
very small quanity of saleratus to the water
in which it is boiled. Ido not offer any of
tho suggestions in this brief article as noy-
el. They are known to many persons, but
very many are not familiar with them. To
such they may be acceptable.

A PRETTY WAY OF STEWING CHICKENS.—
Parboil two fine chickens, take them up
in a pewter dish, cut them up, and separate
all the joint bones one from another, then
tike out the breast bone, add a litle of the
water they were stewed in, a blade of mace
and a pinch of salt, cover closely with anoth-
er dish and put it to stew until the fowls are
tender -serve hot in the same dish.

Authorities, both in Europe and the United States,
and prescribed in their practice.
The experience of thousands daily prove that no
preparation of Iron can be compared with it. Im-
purities of the blood, depression oi vital energy,
pale and otherwise sickly complexions indicate its
necessity in almost every conceivable case.
Innoxious in all maladies in which it has been
tried. it has proved absolutely curative in each of
the following complaints. viz :
In Debility, Nervous Affections, Emanci-
ation Dyspepsia, Constipation, Diarrhea,
Dysentery, Incipient Consumption, Scrofu-
lous Tubercu! Cholorosis, Liver Complaints,
Chi onic Headaches, Rhewmatism, Intermat-
tent Fevers, Pimples on the Face, &c.
In case of GexeraL Depiiry, whether the re-
sult of acute disease, or of the continued diminu-
tion of nervous and muscular energy from chronic
complaints, one trial of this restorative has proved
successful to an extent which no description nor
written attestation would render credible Inval-
ids so long bed ridden as to have hecome forgot-
ten in their own neighborhooas, have suddenly re
appeared in the busy world as if just returned from
protracted travel in a distant land. Some very
signal instances of this kind are attested of female
sufferers, emanciated viotims of apparent maras-
mus, sanguineous exhaustion, critical changes, and
that complication of nervous and dyspeptic aver-
sion to air and exercise for which the physician
has no same,
In Nervous Arrections of all kinds, and for
reasons familiar to medical men, its operation must
necessarily be salutary, for, unlike the old oxides,
it is vigorously tonic, without being exciting and
overheatinfi; and gently, regularly aperient,” even
in the most obstinate case of costiveness, without
ever being a gastric purgative, or inflicting a disa-
greeable gensation. .
It is this latter property, among others, which
makes it so remarkable and permanent a remedy
for Piles, upon it also appears to exert a distinct
and specific action, by dispersing the local ten-
dency which forms them.
In Dyspepsia, innumerable as are its causes,
a single box of these Chalybeate Pills has often
attendent Costiveness
In unchecked DiarrumA, even when advanced
to DYSENTARY, confirmed. emanciating, and ap-
parently malignant, the effects have been equally
decisive and astonishing.
In local pains, loss of flesh and strength, debili-
tating cough, and remittent hectic, which general-
ly indicate Incipient Consumption, this remedy
has allayed the alarm of friends and physicians,
in several very gratifying and interesting instances.
In Scrorurouvs TusercrrLosis, this medicated
iron hag had tar more than the good effect of the
most cantiously balanced preparations of iodine,
without any of their well known liabilities
The attention of females cannot be too confident
ly invited to this »medy and restorative, in the
cases peculiarly affecting them.
In Ruevumarisy, both chronic and inflammatory
—in the latter, however, more decidedly—it has
invariably well reported, both as alleviating pain
and reducing the swellings and stiffness of the
jeints and muscles.
In INTERMITTENT FEVERS, it must necessarily
be a greatremedy and energetic restorative. and
its progress inthe new scttiements of the West,
will probably he one of high renown and useful
ness.
No remedy has ever been discovered in the
whole history of medicine, which exerts such
prompt, happy and fuliy restorative effects. Good
appetite, complete diges:ion, rapid acquisition of
strength, with an unusual disposition for active
and cheerful exercise, immediately follow its use.
