    The Tehatchman,
BELLEFONTE, THURSDAY, MAY 23,
Corn and Cob Meal not injurious to Animals.
For several years past there has been
much said and written, favorably and unfa-
vorably, on grinding corn in the ear as
food for stock. I have been both amused
and disgusted at the recital of stories told
and read by individuals,
I have fed corn and cob meal, more or
less, to horses, cattle, sheep and hogs, in
various forms, at all seasons of the year,
for some six years, and have never scen
any evil results resulting therefrom. But,
on the contrary, have found it to be = sav-
ing of about one-half of the grain fed in the
ordinary way, and more, if properly cooked
and care be taken in feeding. I have fat-
tened cattle, hogs and sheep in half the
time I could on whole corn, and frequently
in the coldest weather, when whole corn
would not move than keep them in living
order. When groun_ fine, I consider it
better for stock than meal ground from
shelled corn. It lies looser in tho animal's
stomach, and will not sour 2s pure corn
meal will, I will give one illustration, to
suffice for many, showing the fallacy of the
danger in feeding corn and cob meal.—
Five years ago this winter, I put up a poor
old work oz, and fod Lim until spring ;
he was fut, but as I conld not sell him for
what I thought he wes worth, I summered
him over to the net fall; put him up again
end fed Lim as before with corn and cob
meal; killed Lim the beginhi g of January
following. A healthier animal I never saw
and us for fatness, there was not a single
half pound of fash but what was streaked
with fat. He was not a large animal, yet
brought nearly $100 in Mount Gilead mar-
ket. ! will give you his gross and net
weight tho day he was butchered. His
gross weight was only a few pounds over
1,800. The meat, after the kidney tallow
was taken out, weighed 1,000 pounds ; the
wholo of the tallow, after being well tried
out, weighed 220 pounds. So you see that
she reat, tallow and hide weighed 1,357
pounds, {caving a waste of only 443 pounds,
not quite one fourth. If Mr, Todd or bie
neighbors can beat the above, through any
other process of feeding, we would like to
hear from them. I will closo by stating
that I have horses in my posession that have
been fed more or less on the above kind of
food from three to five years, and my neigh-
bors will bear me witness that fow horses
yerform more hard service.—— Loussville

Stopping up a Holo With a Stove-pipe.
A gentlemen being much annoyed by a
eat that was under the table during dinner,
eslled his servant (a recent importation)
and told her to take the cat to the wood-
shed, shut her in, and shut the hole where
she came out. Biddy did as directed, but
bad no sooner returned, than the cat again
appeared. The gentleman inquired why
she had not done as he had commanded.
She replied that she had. “And did you
stop the hole ?”” he asked, “Faith an I did!”
she replied. “What with ?” he asked. “A
piece of a stovepipe, sure 1” sho artlessly
replied.
Now, there are a good many people who
will laugh at Biddy’s hecdlessness, and
think sho vas rather green. Yet many of
these same persons are as heedless as she
Mr. A , look at your mowing ma-
ehine standing just where you finished
haying, and your rakes and scythcs hang-
ing in the trees, and your plow rusting in
the corner of the fence, Haven't you stop-
ped a hole with a stove pipe ?
Mr. B—-, see thuso cattle standing out
during the storm by that hay-stack, with-
out avy shelter, exposed to the driving
wind and sleet, wasting their manure and
st least one-third their fodder.
How about the stovepipe in your cases ?
Mr. C , look at that black stream run-
ning away from your barnyard into the
road or brock, earrying away all that is of
value in your manure, wasting what should
be the food of future crops, impoverishing
your farm and yourself with it. Are you
not imitating Biddy this time ?
Mr. » look at those cattle—how poor
they are. You have been selling hay and
grain, and feeding. nothing but straw to
your cattle; they have consequently come
out “spring poor.” It will take them all
summer to recruit. They will be behind
the market, and you cannot sell them for
half what your neighlors are selling them
for. IIow about the stovepipe?
Mr. L——, look at those boards off yonr
barns, your doors lying on their sides,
those holes through the roof, through which
the rain wets rots your grain and hay.
The money and time you spent at that
horse-race last weck would have repaired
your barn. Don’t you think you have
stopped a cat hole with 3 stovepipe ?
Farmers, have not all some hole about
our premises stopped with a stovepipe ?
A farmer’s profits are in inverse ratio to’
his oytgoes, and tho fewer holes he stops
with stovepipes, the greater will be the
balance in his favor gt the and, of the year,
