LOCAL AND PERSONAL
TOPOORAPITICAL MAP OP CENTRIC COUNTY.
—This is a new, piollitotion, 'published by S.
D. Tilden, which will be most heartily web.
corned by every one. There in no class of
business to which it will not. proVe advanta
geous. The enterprising pub/istirr offers
to supply (ho public with a Map, which
in correctness Of detail and general informa
tion is unequalled in anything of ;the like
'character we have overseen. it will be in
'a convenient form,and an indispensibleappur
tenatidei 'to every hsurchohi in the county.—
it will be (hie feet square, beautifully col
ored, and has every town In the county laid
out in the most minute detail, giving every
town, road, and residence thereon, railroad,
every stream, even to a trout brook, all the
ponds, &c., &c.
Every village of any size, is drawn on the
'margin, showing all the streets, with the
houses thereon, giving the names of the
property holders. There is also a scale of
'Hiles. a table of distances, to and from ev
try village in the county. Also a very vsl
liable table of the latest statistical incorina
, lion, showing the population of each town,
the tiumber of schools, scholars and teach
'ers, the agricultural productions, &c.
kt is no catch penny allair, but can be relied
upon implicitly, as S Tilden has had a
Serge experience in the tusiness, and the
Vomit of his labors can be found throughout
the Western slid New England States, a here
they are taken as authority. We earnestly
`commend it to all of our friends in the coun
ty, and can assure them at the same Dine
'hat they will floil polite and tillable gentle

valuable a map can be sold for so small a

days of labor saving The price 14 only live

no less than four encampments of the intlita•
ry in this State during the month of Septem
her, viz : one at York, one et Huntingdon,
at tVilliamsburg, add at Pottsville. 'These
are the localities in the State in winch mil
itary enthusiasm runs highest, and it is al
together r asonahle to suppose that great
exertions will be incite to secure a large
turnout, and nothing left undone to render
them attractive. These encamtinients are
an improvement upon the old system of bat
talion reviews and parades, the same as the
agricultural ixtisbitions are upon the old
fashioned taint and horse races. 'They bring
together people from the surrounding coun
try to enjoy iiiiercoutx, and at the same
time witness a military display, which, of
ter all, are o njoyed quite as much by chit
(hurl of a larg.rTrowth as by children them
selves. The Yoik encampment, which was
ordered by the AJptlnnt (lencral, is regard'
ed'as the State encampment.. ang will um
questionably be the largest of the four The
Pottsville encampment will also be largs. if
only attended by t h e military of Schuylkill

twenty-flee compimes have signified On ir

by them, where they live in squalid poverty,
most of them stib, isting by pilfering and

beyond the arrival of the basket of cold vie

to be procured at all letzards. But it seems
that we are not alone so afflicted. The

"Any time in the day a w•lchffll police

less negroes, hanging round the alle) h with
their w/stskey bottle, and making a noise

LIVIA TOd- lllntr.—There is a dreadful
ambition ati'roall for being "genteoh" We
keep up appearances too often at the ex
pense of honesty, says an exchange, and,
though we May not, yet is(e must seem to be
so. We must be ”respectable," though on
ly ht. the meantult sense--in mere vulgar',
outward show. We have not the courage to
go patiently onward In the st,ndition of I)f, t e'
in which it has pleased flint to call us ; hue I
must neeihi live in some fa r shionable state to
which we ridiculously Please to call rms•
selves, and all to gratify the vanity of that'
unsubstantial genteel world of which we
form a part. There is a constant struggle
and pressure for front seats in the social am

self-denying love is trodden clown, and many
Brie natures are inevitably crushed to death.
What

othelt kith the glare of aPparatit worldly
success, we need not describe. The mis
chievous-results show themselves in a thous
and ways—in the milt frauds committed by
men who dare to be clishohext, but do not
dare to seem poor ; and in the desperate
dashes at fortune, itswhich the pity is not se;
much for those who fail, as for the hundreds
of ionocent, families who are so often involv
