DEWOCRAIKJ WATCHMAN, JONTE, DECEINSIM 29. 1859 E LOCAL AND PERSONAL Niw jaart.—Defolro Another issue of the atehman we himil have entered upon a eat Year t _ankarc take this occasion to ox • ess all the heartfelt congratulations of a ew Year's rooting. The year has, not 'an without its dark spots for us as for .any ,others, but wilihave taken encourage_ en t, ea the sunny chapters of I Vetere invi ling s onrd. Look over the world and every hero lire seen changes, some resulting in good, others in 111. We Ftqe despotisms ottering in ruins, and freer and more liber al systems taking root among their ruinn. = The great 01111180 of equal rights has Stivenced ml. is 011 advancing. Progress seems te o the motto or the world. We, who livein this age, set as many new things in it year as our fathers who have gone before us did in a lifetime. •It is the s ( ge of lightning, of steam, and of lebor-saving' inventions —and what is more, It is the age when a more just sense of the true relenting between those dis coveries and labor allows them to be used for the benefit of the laborer, as well as for the profit of the inventor. It has not always been so hold ; but the prejudice being re. moved, we gladly witness the every-day rev erence for the past and its old fogy notions become weaker andmore weak. The masses educateicto the capacity of self-government, rulla-nevr, and their influence is felt in every department of social and political life. It is impossible to check this go ahead impulse, even if it were desirable, which we do not believe. The groat duty of the good men of the present age is to see that it be kept in the rigt•t channels, and that it run not into wild excess, and destroy, in its fancied so rority, the noble works which it has achiev ed, like a nighty river which, swollen, over leaps its banks. But, dropping generalities, let us come to something a little more proctival This is a day for good resolutions--the best . for that purpose In the whole circle —and by permis sion we will here suggests a few resolutions which ought to loti alopted on the first dny of the year. In the first place, let every sub serther to the t• Watchman:' v recite to re new his own, accompaniedth au addition al subsev:vti-!. I IflW can a man better do h is r iot. ) , than by ',;utting ,his neighbor into possession of the advantsges enjoyed by himself. In the nest place, resolve, whereas, of all the wastes in this wasting world, the waste of time is the wickedest. Look after the minutes. Husband the minutes and the hours, and the days and the years will take care of themselves. Time well spent is a draft on Vie bank of the future which will be paid at sight. —The It a number of Lire lily ' Srui ivii." the Central Press contains a communication over the bignature done J. F. This fellow complains bitterly that we did him injustice in the Watchman, in consequence of having noticed a dmousaion in which lie fiercely partieipated at the Pennsylvania flute' a few Sabbaths ago. Ile charges us with having "SPYKD out n rr,ralr conversa tion If it be true, whet this man Riddle would make the people believe. (or rather as weNMould say .1,01 an F LICTUIIFM RIDDI.II, ESQ ) that a loud and boi-derous discussion at a public house in thewebence of a cru%J, is in reality it “pi iv 'l.• ronveisation with a friend," then indeed, we arc chargeable with a breach of editor-10 plopriety. But this billy attempt to cast aside the odium of a low personal and polit•cal attack on the edi tors of this paper, for an honest difference of opinion, ill the resell of a natural debase ment. The egotism manifested by thus in troducing himself to the yublic. inconsistent with the young man. No gentleman would traduce the character of another publicly on the Sabbath day, and then seek the columns of the Press to justify till morality of his course. We shall, however, leave this em bryo member of the legtil profession to his own reffectione, having no disposition to gratify his vanity bydrerinc; further notice in our paper to such "small potatoes."
