AL AND PERSONAL.
Tau Lscituai ov Tussosar EVENINCL—On
Tiap-tday evening last the introductory Lea.
ture bf Dr. Wm. Elder to the Fen cibles, took
place in the Court house, to a very large au
, dieing. Notwithstanding the very unfavor
able charaoter of the weather, our large and
beautiful COirrt room was. uncomfortably
crowded. The Doctor was introduced by
IL N. *Allister, Esq. his lecture on hu
man progress and civilization was a master
prodsction of a master mind. It is seldom
indeed: that pe have the pleasure of listen
ing to such a rare versatility of talent. Ile
is a prokund thinker and exhibits a pleas
antness of manor and expression that at
once fixes the attention of his hearers.
A vote of thanks was tendered hits. at the
..conclusion or the lecture, which was really
a general outburst of popular applause. The
speaker responded to the complimentary
rote, as having caught the inspiration which
enabled him to discharge his duty from
affinity of mi nd in his highly intellectual
and attentive audience.
While the lecture was an admirable pro
duction,twe cannot reflNtim from expressing
our regret that allusions were made (nninten
llonallyJealeulated to excite partizan feeling.
We are sorry fur this. and we hope that a
str!et regard for the rules of propriety in this
respect will tie observ4il on similar occasions
in future.
The Delhi - out, Brass and Oratorio String
Banda were in attcri,:ancv.
Another licture will be given in the course
of a few weiks, ui Which the Hun John W.
Forney' Hill he present and deliver his very
popular lec'ure on Arne!wan Statesmen.
Our paper just going to press will prevent 1
atoure extended noticel of the lecture and
the incidents of the occasion.
