BENJ. E. .CUSTER,
Chairman ofCJommtee of Arrange
ments. [Oct. 29.-2t]
Chasoe op Schedcl*.—This (Monday) morn
ing, the Winter Arrangement Schedule went into
operation on the Penn’a E. R. On this Schedule
thereare five passenger trains each way daily.—
The passenger business has increased largely with
in the past few months rendering the additional
trains absolutely necessary. The condition of the
road bed and rolling stock of the u enn’a R. R. i>
superior, at this time, to that of any other through
route from East to West, consequently it is the
safest route, and the travelling public know it.
This condition of affairs, is due to proper manage
ment on the part of the officers in charge of the
rood, with whom the Company, or no one else, can
possibly find fanlt.

Messrs. Editors.-—On returning from a visit
home, on last Monday morning, my attention was
letter inf your last’issue, purport
mg been ; «TiittQby a friend of mine. In
reply J ufodd W y that I think the writerf.r his
friendship, but would much rather he should exert
it in some other way than by molesting Mr. Val
lade’s pictures, at the corner of Virginia and Julia
streets, opposite my samples. As to Mr. Vs pic
tures, I have no objection whatever to having them
placed beside mine, for my success depends upon
my pictures, and ! am not at all unwilling to have
them together, as in that case persons can see and
decide for themselves whose pictures are the
Jharpest and most perfectly shaded.

The object of the above Society will commend
itself to the people; ol tins place. The coming
winter will be one of greater seventy than usual
for the poor—" For yc have the jtoor always with
you.” Those who are blessed with comfortable
homes often wish that the suffering and tire des
titute could bo sheltered w hen the storms of winter
approach. It is a feeling of true humanity, and a
precept of our holy religion that the unfortunate of
our fellow-creatures should Us insisted by those
who are blessed with a portion of this world's
goods.
This Societywill prevent, to a great extent, the
imposition which is sometimes practiced upon the
benevolent by the unworthy. The really deserving
will ite visited, andlhe claims of all will be ex
amined. It & hoped, therefore, that when our
citizens are called upon by the above named com
mittees, and. those associated witii them, that
liberal contributions will be made, cither in money
