Quartermaster's Department, ) Harrisburg, Sept. 25 1862. j The Quarter Master General of Penna. ac knowledges the receipt, from Ladies and others of •Vltoona, of supplies for the sick and wounded vol unteers, and desires, in the name and in behalf of these brave and suffering defenders of onr country and the flag we all love so well, to thank, most heartily, the kind and patriotic donors. Our brave and gallant volunteers endure, and are willing to endure, privations without a mur mur; but when prostrated by sickness, or wounded in battle, they have a claim on the free will offer ings of those in whose defence they have periled their lives. Most nobly has this claim been res tonded to by the patriotic women in all parts of our glorious State. No town so small, no district oi remote, that their abundant contributions have not been sentlforward to comfort and gladden these suffering ones. God shield and protect onr noble soldiers, from sickness, wounds and death; and may He bless the kind and loving hearts who la bor so cheerfully and untiringly at home to pro mote their comfort and cheer their hours of pain and suffering. Quarter Master General. Report of articles prepared and forwarded from the ‘'Soldiers Aid Society” of Altoona for .the month ending October Bth: 383 rolls bandages, 68 shirts, 24 towels, 40 pocket handkerchiefs, 20 sheets, 9 linen coats, 2 feather pillows, 6 pillow cases, 35 round and 11 square limb cushions, and a large quantity of lint and compresses. 61 cans fruit, 5 bottles wine, 10 sacks of dried frnit, 2 lbs chocolate, 7 jars and 12 glasses of jellies—making in all 9 boxes and one barrel. KATE E. GWINN, Secy. I>' ( Memobi.vm.—Another family circle mpoms a loved one lost. John Bose, son of John and Sarah Rose; of this place, fell on the battle field of Amietam, a sacrifice on the altar of his country. He was shot through the bowels and lived thirty three hours after receiving the wound. He was a member of Capt. Hostetler’s company. The following lines, by George P. Morris, express the sentiments of his parents and friends: He died, as he had lived, beloved. Without an enemy on earth; In word and deed he breathed and moved The soul of honor and of worth : His hand was open as the day, His bearing high, his nature brave; And, when from life he pass’d awav, Our hearts went with him to the grave. What desolation fill’d our home When death from us our treasure bore! Oh! for the better world to come Where we shall meet to part no more! The hope of that sustains us now, * In that we trust on bended knee, While thus around his faded brow We twine the wreath of memory. Here We Are!— Belford, the tailor, hasn’t teen long in town, but everybody knows he’s here, because of the many neat fits which now appear on our streets, and the fancy colors and quality of clothing worn, and because of that big window in ftnujt'of his shop, with “D. W. A. Belford, Mer chant Tailor,” neatly painted on the glass. . Well, Belford has just received a heavy invoice of fall ■ind winter styles of goods for coats, pants and vests, and well tell yon, boys, his vest patterns are sufficient to make your eyes dance. Just roll in anil see them. You won’t be able to make a choice, but just leave your dimensions and -Belford will get you up u garment that will please yon better than yon could have pleased yourself. W” With the subject of the following “Trib utes of Respect” we were intimately acquainted and we can not allow this opportunity to pass without adding our testimony to that of his com panions in extenuation of the virtues which so beautifully adorned his Kfe and make him the i more lamented, now that his example and society > s lost on earth. We believe we can truly say that, we never met a yonng man of more purity of thought, word and action. No unchased expres sion ever escaped his lips and ho feeling of anger ever ruffled his temper. It may be truly said of him that “none knew him but to love him," and those who knew him best loved him most. He was induced to enlist in the service of his conntrv -from a clear convictiop of duty—and not from a desire to gain military honors or notoriety. In ;this respect he was a true patriot, and be now fills a patriot and a Christian’s grave, the latter his friends have hope. While he may not come again to them, they can go to him. ;i Tribute of Respect,— At a meeting of the M. E. Sabbath School, of Altoona, held September 28, 1862, the following preamble and resolutions ;were unanimously adopted: - Whereas, In the inscrutable bnt aiwise provi dence of Almighty God, our beloved' brother, Frederick C. Ward, has been removed from amongst us by death, being slain bn the battle field, whilst engaged against the enemy of our beloved country, therefore, be it S ; Resolved, that we regard the death Of our brother as a sad bereavement, both to this school and to the chnrch to which we are attached. Resolved, that while our brother Was amongst ins, we bad constantly presented for our admira tion and imitation, an eminent example of sincer ity, tmthfnlness, integrity, entire freedom from guile, genial humor, bright intelligence, Christian devotion and moral purity. Resolved, that we tender to bis bereaved parents and heart-stricken sisters, onr sincere condolence and sympathy, with the assurance that the memo ry of our young brother who was bold and brave, as well as good, shall be fondly cherished -by ns, and with the prayer that is the father of os all, in His great mercy may comfort and sus ,tain them in their sore affliction. Resolved, that a copy of the above resolutions be presented to the family of the deceased, and that another copy be furnished for publication in the Altoona Trilnme. D. W. A. BELFORD, Sup'l. Thos. L. Cajjdweix, Sec'y. . At a meeting of the Principal and Pupils of the Altoona Academy, held Sept. 29th 1862, the fol lowing paper was unanimously adopted, Whekeas : It has pleased an Allwise God, in bis inscrutable Providence,, to remove by death Fred. C. Ward, late a beloved fellow student of this Academy, (who fell, while nobly and heroi cally fighting for the liberty of bis country,) one Who devoted bis time and his talents, while in our midst, to the development of his intellectual and moral faculties; one who endeared himself by the amiability and kindness of his disposition, and to ivbose voice -we have often listened with pleasure and profit in the discussions incident to the school room, and whose example tended so much to the prosperity of this school. . Yet, it becomes us to bpw in bumble submission, to the will of that Allwiae God, who directs all things for our good and His glory. What our loss is, we have great reasdn to believe is the infinite gain of our departed friend. While we can no longer listen to his voice on earth, we have great reason to rejoice in the hope, that he is mingling , his voice with the Angelic host, which surround the throne of God. While we deeply sympathize with his grief-stricken parents and beloved sisters, we know there, is to them’ a consolation above all price,—they have reason to believe be was prepared to meet his God. Therefore K. C. HALE, Resolved, That we deeply sympathize with the relatives of the deceased in their bereavement, and earnestly deplore his loss. Resolved, That we receive this dispensation as an admonition to greater faithfulness in the dis edarge of onr duties; for we know not how soon we may be called to our account. : Resolved, That a dublicate copy of this pream ble and resolutions be made out and presented to the family of the deceased.
