We have not been furnished with the vote for
election officers in Wert Ward. We learn, however,
that the following persons, on Citizens’ Ticket,
were elected, viz:—Jndge of Elections—Michael
Clabaugh; Inspectors—George W. Kessler, John

Altoona, Februarir 22.—Onr Borough is full
of life to-night, n grind illumination and torch- |
light procession being in progress. Many of our |
public buildings, and stores are illuminated, and
flags are flying in all directions. Tire torchlight 1
procession is now marching through onr principal l
streets, and making a grand display of flags ban
ners and transparencies. This evening a hundred
grns were fired on the hill in East Ward.— Special
Dispatch to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
If the person who furnished the above intended
that it should be understood ironically, we give Iran
the credit of being a pretty fair reporter; but if he
intended otherwise, we would deem him an apt
scholar of Tom Pepper. We were about h little
on the evening in question, but could not observe
that our Borough was more “full of life” than
usual, and as for the “ grand illumination and
torch-light procession” wo think they were all in
the eye and down the throat of thcluquirer's repor
ter. We did not observe a single house or busi
ness place illuminated, and the flags which reporter
observed “flying in all directions,” was no doubt
a hallucination produced by the-torch-light proces
sions. True, there were quite a numberj of flags
flying thronghout the day, hut they hod mostly
been hauled in before dark. Of the torch-light
procession we hardly know how to speak. It was
a most magnificent failnre, either os a reality or a
burlesque. It consisted of some 20 or 25 boys
carrying lamps used by the “Wide Awakes’or
‘ Minute Men,” in the campaign of ’GO, and one
small transparency, Altogether it resembled a
“ Salt River procession” much more than a dem
onstration in honor of the recent achievements of
the arms of the Union, or a commemoration of the
birthday of the “Father of his Country.” The
last sentence in the above report is the only cor
rect one. Those who had charge of “ little Union”
fulfilled their part of the programme, and thus par
tially redeemed the character of the proceedings
of the evening. May we never look upon the like
again.
A. M, L. & R> B. A.—At a meeting of the
Altoona Mechanics' Library and Beading Boom
Association, on Friday Evening last, a resolution,
offered by X. P.; Sargent, Esq., was passed, elect
ing the President, General Superintendent, and
Chief Engineer, of the Pennsylvania Bail Bead
Company, honorary members of the Association.
The following gentlemen were elected active
members;—Prof. John Miller, Dr. J. M. Gemmill,
D. J. Neff, L. Stewart, T. J. Gregg, M. J. Swank,
George F. Huff, Charles Welsh, and John Hile
man.
An informal report from the Committee on Out
standing Dues was made, and.it was
Resolved, That all money obtained—except such
as is actually necessary for a few current expenses
—should at once be applied to the purchase of new
books. %
The following periodicals and newspapers have
been subscribed for, for the year 1862:
Magazines —“ Rebellion Record,” “Journal of
Franklin Institute," “Atlantic Monthly," “Eclec
tic Magazine,” “Harper’s Monthly,” and “ Godey’s
Lady’s Book."
Daily Naptpapfrs— li Forney's (Phila.) Press”
and “New York Tribune.”
Weekly, Newspapers —“ Louisville Journal,”
“ Scientific American,” and “Altoona Tribune.”
Some interesting donations' to the Cabinet of
Minerals of the Association were then received,
and the Board adjourned.
Sr. Vales tine’s Day.— We are pleased to re
cord that St. Valentine’s Day has been passed this
year without attracting attention, or the exchange
of those unsightly carricatnrcs intended to wound
the feelings. The fact that all inail matter must
new be pre-pedd hasundoubtedly contributed much
to break down toe detestable, practice, alone en
gaged in by toe low and vulgar. Those who send
neat or expensive valentines to toe fair sex, have
no hesitancy in paying postage therefor, but. toe
“ sell” is all taken ont of toe vulgar ones by having
to pre-pay postage. The day was always “more
boomed in toe breach than the observance,” and
never more so than this year.
“Ox to Na»hville!” —This is the heading of
a regr important advertisemcntin another column,
which the ladies needn’t read. '
Scddbm Deaths.—Dr. Hall, in bis Journal of j
Health, savs that very few sudden deaths which I
are said to arise from disease of the heart do really '
arise from that cause. To ascertain the real origin I
of sodden deaths, the doctor says the experiment j
has been tried in Europe, and reported to a scien
tific- Congress held at Stiasbnrgh. ■ Sixty-six cases
of sudden deaths were made the subjects of a thor
ough post mortem examination. ■; In these coses
onlv two were found who died front diseases of the
heart. Uine out of the sixty-six died from apo
plexy, while there were forty-six cases of conges
tion of the lungs; that is, the lungs were so full of
blood they could not work, there not being room
enough for a sufficient quantity of air to enter to
support life. The doctor goes on to enumerate the
causes that may produce congestion of the lungs.
They are cold feet, tight shoes, tight clothing, cos
tiveness, sitting still until chilled through after
being warmed by labor or a rapid walk, going:too
suddenly from a dose heated room into the cold
air, especially after speaking, and sudden depres
sing news operating on the blood. These causes
of sadden death bejng known, nn avoidance of
them may serve to lengthen our : valuable lives,
which would otherwise be lost under the very diet
of a heart complaint. That disease is supposed to
be incurable, and hence men may not take the
pains they would to avoid sudden death if they
"knew it fey in their power. . ■

Shocking.— On Tuesday night last, a stock car,
in which there were four horses, caught fire from
the locomotive, while coming over the mountain,
and burned two of the horses so shockingly that
they had to be killed. The other two were also
considerably burned, but, it is thought they will get
well. The sight of those most severely burned
was indeed sickening to look upon. Their ears
were almost burned off, their eyes burned out, and
all the hair, and the skin in many places, burned off.
Three Lectures. —We are; pleased to be able
to announce. to our readers that an arrangement
has been perfected with Dr. Bettleheim for the de
livery of three lectures, on Japan, in the Presby
terian Church, in this place, on. the evenings of
the 6th, 10th and 13th of March. The proceeds
of the lectures are for the benefit of the Sabbath
School connected with the Church. The price of
tickets will be 20 cents for each lecture, or 50 cts.
for the course.
Fatal Accident.—J. Wesley Gilliuul, a brake
man ou the Huntingdon and Broad Top coal
trains, -was instantly killed in Huntingdon on
Wednesday last. He was standing upon the plat
form of the.rear car, and while the train was hack
ing up on the Pennsylvania tiding, a sudden jar
threw him off’, and falliug upon (he track the car
passed over liim, completely severing his head
from ids bodv.
New' Map.— The agent has been
in town for some days, selling Mitchell’s new Na
tional Map. We can recommend it as being a
good work and worthy of patronage. In fact we
can hardly see how a man can get along without
one of these new maps at thi* time; Every per
son who can spare the money should have one.—
Thcv are exceedingly beautiful as well as useful.
Boarding. —Mrs. Confer desires us to say to
the public’that she does not Intend to quit keeping
boarders, as has been reported. On the contrary
she will continue the business, and hopes to receive
a liberal patronage. She is .prepared to accommo
several more boarders. , “
Troops Going East. —Coli Lehman’s 103rd
Regiment, from Kittaning, and Col. Slaughdecker s
lUth Regiment, from Erie, passed through this
place, this week, on their way to Baltimore, there
to take ship for some Southern port.
<3* Amlp Ciaubaugh has a; few more gross of

A Few Worm to Cash Bcyeus.—The “Pan
ic Store" being the only one in this section of the
State that sells exclusively for cash, and at cash,
prices, the proprietor wishes to impress a few facts
and figures upon the minds of cash buyers;
Ist, That he has but one price on his goods, and
that price only five per cent; advance on cost.
2d, That by doing a strictly cash business he
can and docs sell cheaper than ally, house which
does a credit, because, Ist, parties baring at a
credit store, even though they pay cash for their
purchases, pay credit prices,; for the reason that
the proprietors of credit stores are afraid to sell to
cash customers at lower figures than they do to
their credit customers, lest'their credit customers
should find it out and withdraw their patronage;
and, because 2d, by selling for cash only he gets
no bad accounts on his bookstand loses no money,
consequently he is not compelled to tax paying
customers to make up his losses on non-paying
ones. , ,
3d. For proof of these assertions he refers to
the following figures: :
All styles of Prints sold elsewhere at 16 cents
■per yard, he sells at 12} cts. per yard.
Domestic Ginghams only 12} cts. per yd. sold
elsewhere at 16 cts. • - . ~

LIVER COMPLAINT.
This to ft dtoeaac much talked »!«•■, hut at tha MM
Uma tarj Imperfectly uoderatood. ■ , , . _
Properly apeaklog, every derapgcttent of the Uw «
BllUouft ayetem to a Liver Complaint, but the peculiar atM*
of the Liver to which 1 now have reference 1a a Ckrtmtt
Affection, and uaually arlaaa from a torpid or congftatlTa
elate of that important organ. Somelimea the bite too*-
fleieot In quantity, or vitiated in quality, or both thaee
atataa prevail at the tame time. Somctimea the dtoeaaa M
owing to obatrnctiou in the dnet or pipe which convaya
the bile from the liver into the bowels, This ohatrucllon
to very froqnent, and to usually caused by the pipebeinc
clogged up by thick tonacloua slime or mucoua, and at**-
times bv giU-stoDMs The bile is then thrown beck ink
the gall-bladder, -Where it is absorbed by numerous smau
vessels which convoy It into the Thoracic Duct, a piph
that runs up along the spine, and terminates in and *®P*
ties Itself into the large vein of tho left shoulder, near its
Junction with the veins of the head and neck, and tbebts
the bile is conveyed to the heart and becomes mixed with
the blood, the bile in this manner being diverted from
its proper eburso, and circulating in a part o' the body
where it uetcr Wes designed by nature, produces much evil,
and often disastrous effects upon the health of the Indl*
vidoal—because, lor want of healthy bile to mix with tha
half-digested food, a complete separation never takes piasa
between the chyle (tho inilky liquor which forms tha
blood) and those portions of ibe food designed by nature
to be ejected from the bowels—-for the bite, when present,
purifies and separates the healthy from the Unhealthy per- #
tious, in the same manner that isinglass or white of egg*
separate wine or cider from their impurities—and, conse
quently, tho very fountain of Tlfu is vitiated and corrupted.
Costivenese prevails—or alternately costlvenets or diar
rhcea—wind in the stomach and bowels, and the patient Is
often annoyed with worms, and frequently with the piles*
The coarse particles of the bile thus mixed with tba blood,
more or leas obstruct the puree of the skin and small blood- \
vesiolfl, ftod hence give rise to various direases of the skin,
such as erysipelas, cotcms, itching*, small watery vessels,
blotches* tUmors, pimples, scurfiness, boils, sore eyes, sores
and ulcers of vkrlons kinds. The skin is more or less
yellow, add (when the disease is of long standing.) often
very dark, ttd has a disagreeable, dirty. yr«wy appearance,
and sometimes there is a perfect Jaundice. The whtU of
the cy«i aleo.hee a flrecu or yeltoio tinge.
MORE OR LXHS bile is strained from the blood in Its
passage through the kidneys, end, by He acrimony, pro
duces pains in the back, and scalds and irritates all the
urinary passages. Some days the passage of urine is pro
fuse, and oaturalin appearance; etothertimee It is scanty,
and the desire to evacuate is frequent and urgent. Some*
times the color is nearly white and milky, but usually it Is
high colored, red or yellow, with a rank, offensive odos
and sometimes it is bloody.
The tongue is usually more or lees costed with a brown
scurf. There Is irritation, and frequently chronic Inflam
mation of the inner surfece of the stomach and bowels,
With a tenderness on pressure, and a soreness along tho
lower edge of the ribs.
SOMETIMESTHERE IS A LOATHING of food, and cl
other times there is a voracious appetite. There Is often a
feeling of chilliness, and coldness of the feet and knees,
and along the inside of the thighs—sour or bitter eructa
tions, and sometimes a spitting or throwing up of the food
aflcreating.
There is a feeling of oppression aerpu the stomach and
cheat, as U pressed down by a weight; troublesome and
often fHgbtfht dreams, low spirits,, mhghori want of ener
gy, melancholy restlessness anddlscuntentedosee, dreami
ness of mind—timorousoosa and a great deal of trouble,
and a disposition to magnify everything, sometimes great
watchful luces, and a n inability to sleep—at otbera greet
drowsiness, weariness, and disinclination to motion.
