LOCAL ITEMS.
jgy We issue our paper a little ia advance
t y 3 week, in order to give ourselves time to put
up a ruling machine and other improvements
whiih we are adding to our establishment, after
whisk wc will be prepared to execute all kinds
of Job Printing in the most approved style.
jpyV* Our readers will find on interesting dia-
;,,j£ue, about large and small potatoes, op our
fourth page. Head it. Od our first and second
will be found two letters from our foreign
correspondent which-will repay a perusal. We
have 1 still another on hand from him, which will
prove more interesting tban.any yet published.
tQ, Truly glad are wo that the election will
be over previous to another issue of our paper.
Almost all our exchanges are now so packed
with political matter, of which we have had a
surfeit, that we can scarcely find nn interesting
item to clip. Even local items are scarce as
bon teeth, or snow banks in July, and all be
cause the dear people are engaged in saving the
Union, which is .not in danger. Should we be
ftblo to get up a column of local this week, out
■of the very Htttle transpiring, we shall think we
have done well.

Political Meetings.— The People’s Party
boKTa meeting in their Club on Friday
evening last, which was addressed by Win. P.

loesa America.— One of the growing find
enormous evils of our town is the rampant char-'
seter of the boys. They are all aspiring to bo
wen, before they have reached that period of
life which admits of the slightest / self control,
or personal responsibility. Imitating the vic
ious. Mbits of men, they drink, smoke, swear,
and swagger after the manner of the most ap
proved ruffianism A gentle rebuke, even, is
insulting, to tbo dignity of these youngsters, and
none are more ready to resent ,the remotest
trenching upon their assumed and lofty peroga
tives.
Loso Dresses. —Girls, don’t wear your dres
ted quite so long at the lower end. It is none
of our business, really, nor are we in any par
ticular way .interested in these .matters; but
crerybody is talking about how ridiculous it is
tu sweep the streets, and '‘ jkick np a duBt’’ gen
erally, only for the sake of being |»sbionablc.
We are no judge of what Is -bcst for' you to do
in regard to it; but—it is making a,.good deal
of talk iu the neighborhood—besides many of
you need this superfluous material on the top
about the neck. i
Riot.— Some time since the workmen at Ben
nington Furnace, oh the mountain above this
I'laec, struck for higher wages, or for cash for
tlieir work, we are not certain which, and refus
ed to go to work again, or let any others go to
wora iu their places, unless their; demands were
complied with. The managers refused the' de
mands of the workmen, consequently no work
bs beeu done for the last week. On Monday
last the strike took the form of a riot—clmbs,
stones, pistols and different kinds! of fire arms
being culled into requisition. A mess eager was
sent to Ilollidaysburg for the Sheriff and a posse
af men to arrest the rioters, and yesterday
'Tuesday) morning the Juniata Rifles, Capt.
Loyd, and the Hpllidaysburg Fencib’cs, Capt.
Manier, were ordered, by Judge Taylor, to the
teat of war. At the time we go to press we
have npMearned what they, have accomplished

“aking arrest, but it is quite likely that by' the
