Hbatt Rains and Slides.— During lbs hitter |
part of last week we were favored with the I
heaviest rain we have ever witnessed, ahd as a \
natural consequenee, all the strea&s id the
country were mrtcii swollen, aud a great amondi
frtf property along the thanks has been either
swept away or damaged. Several washes and !
slides occuired along the Penn’aßailroad. which i
considerably deranged the running passenger j
trains on Friday and Saturday, only one trains
each day arriving from the east. The meet ex
tensive slides Dccurred between Perrysville and
"Mexico stations. They almost covered the
track for half a mile, and in one case carried
the track some distance into the river. Two
paspenger cars, which were standing below the
first slide, were struck by the second slide and
thrown into the river. A heavy force of hands I
were immediately set to work to clean away the
earth, and on Monday Inst the trains commen
ced running as usual. Tyrone City, we under- j
stands was partly submerged by Bald Eagle *
Creek, duripg Thursday night and Friday. The !
boom, nt Williamsport, on the Susquehanna j
River, was broken and about 80,000,000 feet of
lumber swept away. Loss estimated at half a
million dollars.

Large Gun.— Yesterday morning amoannotb
cannon manufactured at Fort Pitt foundry,
pear Pittsburgh, and intended, to be mounted
at Old Point Comfort, passed through this place.
It weighs 49.09 D pounds, has a 15 inch bore,
and the metal at the muzzle is 6 inches thick.
It being tod heavy for one car, a kind of arch
bridge was built over two cars and the gun
swung underneath It, in order to equalize the
weight on each car. If a full load out,.of it
wouldn’t make a ship bound and glass rattle,
we don’t know what would.
