U>ioir a I)lel.— We have just been made ,
, c quftinieJ with the following facts, in refer- ;
eß ce to a difficulty which came fery near being .
Billed agreeably to the laws of the" codeduello,” '
lie preventing cause being inserted in its prop- j
e r place. It appears that two of our citizens
ind a little difficulty about sawing wood. Sharp
words were exchanged nnd bard blows would
have been the result, had it not struck one of
tie parlies that a duel would be a more honora
ble and satisfactory mode of settling the account.
Accordingly a challenge was sent.and accepted.
Seconds were chosen, horse-pistols selected as
lie weapons, distance ten paces, and the time
between 9 and VI o’clock, A. M., on Monday,
fcb. Kith. One of the parties appeared anx
ious for the time to~ arrive, in order that he
night wipe out the insult that had been given
hiia, or be himself wiped out of existence. —
Like a thoughtful man, he settled up all his bu
tiness, that he might be prepared for the latter
contingency. At just 30 minutes past eleven
o'clock, on the appointed day, the parties met.
The seconds loaded the pistols, and stepped otf
the distance, after which they placed the princi-
pals in their positions and handed them the pis
tols. The crisis had now Doen reached. -The
seconds stepped back from their men and pre
pared to give the word of command, when lo !
the pistol drops from the band of one of the
bcligercats and the last seen of him was his
coat tail turning the nearest corner at 2,40
speed. 'Thus ended what might otherwise have
l>o*n a terrible tragedy. The pistols, we be
lieve, contained nothing but a little powder.
Important. —The attention of the Stockhol
ders in the Altoona Gas and Water Company is
directed to the following section of the Act of
Assembly of March 11th, 1857, entitled “an
net to provide for the incorporation of Gas and
Water Companies:—
Hec. 8. That if the stockholder, whether an j
original subscriber or ossignee, after twenty ,
days’ notice of the time and place appointed for
the payment of any instalment or proportion of
the capital stock,’ shall neglect to pay the same
at the place appointed, for the space of thirty j
days after the time appointed for payment there- |
of, each stockholder shall, in addition to the in- j
stalment so called for, pay at the rate of one j
per centum per month for every of such
payment, and if the same and additional penal
ty shall become equal to the sum before paid
on account of such shore, the same may be for
feited by and to the said company, and may be
a dd by them at public sale for such price as may
be obtained therefor, or in default of'payment
of aiiy stockholders of such instalments as
aforesaid for the space of sixty days after the
time appointed as aforesaid, the president and.
managers may at their election cause suit to be
brought in the same manner as debts of alike,
amount are now recoverable; for the recovery of
the eame, together with the penalties aforesaid.
We give the above for the information and
aoneiit of those who have not yet paid their sub
scriptions to the capital stock, us wc understand
that fte Company intend enforcing the law
against all delinquents, immediately after the
hist instalment is due.
Accident. — The venerable mother of Sheriff
Punk, and wife of Mr. John Funk, of Allegheny
township, met with a sad accident on Sabbath
morning last. She started to the barn to milk,
nnd when passing down the back steps leading
to the stable below, she slipped and fell, frac
turing her left arm below the shoulder and dis
i cated the shoulder joint. She suffered very
severely, but is doing as well a$ could be ex
pected. Drs. Landis and Christy performed
the surgical duties in the case.—' I (’/Ay.
O.s inn Couxkk. —We notice tjhat our young
Iricnd, G. M. Smith, has opened a wholesale
nod retail /confectionary establishment, in the
room formerly occupied; by JI. Tuch,
on the corner of Main and .Cardline streets.—
He has on hand a large stock of candies, nuts,
fnut . &c,, which he will sell at prices to suit
the times. All .in want of anytjung in his line
should give him a caU. V
Election. —The borough . election, which
comes off to-tohrrqw, prpmifies to be hotly con
tested. .The most important office to be filled
‘ s that of Justice.of the Pcoce. for which them
ftr ® MTen candidates, three of whom we the

Attend to Coccus and Golds. —There is a
significance in the above advice which, if atten
ded to in time, would save hundreds of persons J
from untimely graves. Do we not know that j
many persons neglect to attend to coughs and j
such like maladies, under the hope that nature I
will cure. Nature does sometimes cure; bat
slie will cure much more rapidly if assisted by
some such remedy as Dr. Keyset's Pectoral
Syrup, which is compounded for those very dis
eases of the lungs and bronchial apparatus, so
prevalent in every part of the United States.—
We advise our readers, therefore, who may, be
afflicted with coughs, bronchial irritation or any
disease of the lungs or wind-pipe, to have re
course nt once to this remedy, which Dr. Key
set-has prepared with great care for the cure of
those cases. Timely attention will save much
i suffering and oftentimes the life of Die person
using .it. Sold at fifty cents and one dollar per
bottle, by Dr. Keyset, , No. 110 Wood street. —
