disposed of Cambria, Blair, and Clearfield coun
dei. assembled in Tyrone, on the inat, to
elect a delegate to the State Convention of the'
People'* Putty, to be held at Harrisburg, on the
22d of February.
.Geo. 'IF- Patton, Esq., of Blair, was elected
President, and Wm. Mcßride, of Clearfield,
Secretary.
Jacob M. Campbell, Esq., ofCambrin, was
oßinimouily elected tbe Delegate, and the fol
lowing resolutions of instruction were adopted
without a dissenting.voice :
Raolvtd, That the Delegate this day elected,
ii hereby instructed to vote for the Hen. Samuel
Cflvin, of Blair county, as tbe candidate of the
People’s Party for Governor, and in tbe event
if the name of Mr. Galvin being withdrawn, or
there being no prospcct.of his, Domination then
he ilmll vote for tbe Hon. Andrew G Curtin, of
Centre county, as the only remaining choice of
the majority of the people of this Senatorial
District.

Niw Smoke Consuming Locomotive.— One of
onr exchanges contains a description of a new
locomotive, baili by Mr. George Grier, of this
place, .ifcster ijlncbinist of the Pennsylvania
Railroad. It is constructed after a plnn of Mr.
Gnvr s designing, and is regarded by those com
ftient to judge jof such matters, as one of the
most potrtrful and complete engines of the class
‘w constructed anywhere. Im appearance it
them Wes the* ordinary “ camelback,” or coal
banting euginesinqw in use on the eastern <B«i.

sore highly finished, and seems built for greater

qualities which .give - it for more interest in tbe

tirdinnry locomotive belches forth at each revo

the smoke, a grejit saving of fuel is effected.—

Valentines! Valentines! !—-St. Valentine
has taken up bis head-quarters athis old stand,
Fettinger’s Literary Emporium, No. 1, Altoona
House, wberehe will be pleased to see hisfriends
young and old, daring the season. At the
above stand may be found a large stock of Jab
entines, ranging from 1 cent to $3, consisting
of comic, sentimental and artistic.. Sweethearts
and lovers, sisters and brothers, attend to the
Voice Of conscience, and go to Eettingcr's and
buy one of those sweet little missives, which,
by being applied according to directions, are a
certain cure for the heart-ache.’
Fbo tbacted Meeting.—Rev. Creighton com
menced a protracted meeting in the. M. E.
Church, in this place, on Saturday evening last,
which is alii! ip progress. The nightly meetings
are well attended, and it is to be hoped that they
Will result in doing much good. Rev. A. M.
Barnitz, of Huntingdon, filled the pulpit on
Sunday morning and evening. He is a well-read
theologian, a deep thicker, and possesses a re
markable memory. His discourses were deliv
ered with energy and freedom, and listened to
with marked attention by a large audience.
Hanibal and St, Joseph R. R. Lands.— ln
another column will be found an advertisement
offering .a bargain in the lands belonging to this
company. The lands lie in the northern port
of Missouri, on the lino of the road which ex
tends from Hanibal, on the Mississippi river, to
St. Joseph, on the Missouri river. It is report
ed to be a healthy region of country, well
watered and wooded. Those who design emi
grating to tho West, might do well to examine
these lands. A pamphlet containing all neces
sary information can be seen at this office.
Wm. R. .Boyers, Esq., of our town, has
received and accepted the appointment from tbe
Vatent Office Department, to secure the name of
the birth-place, country of birth of parents,
profession or occupation, age, height and weight,
of all native born white males, of eighteen years
and upwards, residing in this place. Tbe object
of the department we do not know, but we pre
sume it is to obtain the native-born population,
&c., of tbe United States, to be part of tbe cen
sus of Is6o. r
Cellab Thieving.—We learn that thjp busi.
ness has been carried on pretty extensively in
this place for some time pa'jit. Quite a number
of cellars and pantries hate been visited and re
lieved of their edible contents.. Who the parties
are that follow this business remains a mystery.
All the advice we can give citizens is to see to
their boils and bars, lest tney wake up some
morning and find that they have nothing for
breakfast. . ..
Skirts.—lt is said that long skirts are going
j out of use, and that others which do not sweep
j the side-walk will take their places, but we have
I BCcn Done of the new style hero. Nothing looks
less tidy than tp pec a handsome silk skirt mov
ing down the street like a in full sail, tow
ing after it half a dozen parcels- of sticks, sha
vings, twine and loose paper Shorter skirts
are not liable te these “attachments,” and
therefore must look more graceful and elegant.
