TifASKaaiv;HG Day.—tiThdrsday last was gen
erally observed as a day pf Thanksgiving by
our cititons. She stores and'other business
places, with a few exceptions, and the shops of
the Penn'a B. R, Co„ were closed, and the
streets presented a Sabba At
10J o’clock, A, M., Rev. Sembower preached
a sermon appropriate to the occasion, in the
Lutherah Church, to a very largo and apprecia
tive congregation. His discourse is highly
spoken of by those who heard it. In the after
noon, all the public schools’formed into proces
sion at the foot of Virginia street and marched
up to the Presbyterian Church, Where the
scholars were addressed by Kevs.' Clark, Creigh
ton and Sembower. There were some four or
five hundred children in the procession, although
the Schools were far from being full. . We are
particularly.’gratified to state that we did not
observe an intoxicated person on our streets on
that day, and we have not heard-of any drink
ing or rowdying in any ; part of the town.
Cojimunicatiox.— ln another column of to
day’s paper will bo found a communication
from a fireman of this plade, in answer to the
communication of “Well Wisher,” .which ap
peared a few weeks since. It! has been on file
for two weeks, but for reasons which would be
satisfactory to any one who understands the
printing business and our situation for some
time past, wo could not find a place for it. We
publish, the communication not because we
think the- remarks of “ Well Wisher” demanded
such a reply, but to relieve ourselves *of the
charge of partiality. We doubt very much
whether the remarks of “A Fireman” will meet
with the approval of the majority of the mem
bers of the Fire Company. It certainly lacks
spirit of “Well Wisher’s” article, besides
intimating what is not correct.

Lame Beak 'Shot.— On Monday last two
young men, named Thomas. C. Yingling and
Sampson C. Glass, white hunting among a ledge
of Rocks, known on “Bear Rocks,” about eight
miles north of this place, came upon a monster
bruin lying in a hole among to rocks. Oil*
their approach he raised his head and looked at
them and then quietly laid down again. A bul
let from each gun simultaneously planted in hia
knowledge box, caused him to wake up pretty
quick, but his day was over. On examination
ho proved to be one of the largest varmints of
the kind ever killed '.on these mountains, and
extremely fat. J He weighed 816 pounds after
the entrails were taken out. His kidney and
entraii fat yielded 3 gallons’ of nil. The young
men realized the snug sum. of $53 out of hhn <
besides the fun and glory of killing such a
whopper. Jr.
Good Wu.n Fins Company Bale. —The Good
Vfill Fire Company of this place intend giving a
Grand Ball, in'Shultz's Military Hall, on.Tfaurs
day evening, December 22d. The Committee of
Arrangements have rented .the Bar-room ad
joining .the Hall, for that evening, and intend
closing the bar and using the room as a refresh
ment room. There can therefore be no 1 objec
tions urged by any for not participating in the
dance, on account of its close proximity to a
bar-room. The intention of the Ball .ls to raise
funds to pay the last instalment on the beauti
ful engine recently purchased by the Company.
We hope they may realise handsomely.

Street liEcrnhE. —On Sunday aftetnooti last,
a street temperance lecturer, named Gen. Beiley,
held forth' in frput of the “ Logan House.’’—
From the .manner of his speaking, ire judged
him to be pometlung of a Yankee. Se makes
some capital hits ip his addresses, and his argu

Sudden Death. —On Saturday last, an old
lady named Catharine Beard, wife of Mr. John
Beard, of Scotch Talley, whilst engaged about
her household duty, suddenly fell over on the
floor and immediately expired. She was in her
usual health, and had just requested a littlc.girl
to hand her a drink, but she-didn’t live to tako
it. She was 71 ypars, G months and 12 days
old, and left a large circle of friends to mourn
her sudden departure.— Register.

‘‘WeU-WlahorjJ* cautioning the Altoona firemen to be

arc highly pleased aith thr hint* thrown otttto them by
their friend “Well-Wisher," and lhatthey will hereafter
.be govfcrned by hint; providing be wbnti take a fatherly
care over them while in the performance’ fc't their duty.—
Because yon know, Well-Wisher, that they are youpg, in
nocent men, and likely to be led astray, if no
guardian to Watch over them while they are oat with their
machine, in replylngto M'oU-Wiaher, 1 would inform him
that the Firemen were not aware that they were to be
watched in their movements upon the occasion alluded to.
If they could have had even the slightest Lint thrown out
to therfi before the paradc-thot they were to have a repor
ter along with them, they would hate hod one*who would
have kept himself sober, for thecredit of tho Firemen if
not his own. Because, Messrs Editors, Ido for one really
believe that our reporter was slightly iiiebriated on'that
occasion. Now let ns take his own words for an explana
tion. He says, behold there #re two young men going to
wards tho Altoona House and disappearing 'down the cel
lar, and presently they again made their appearance, giv
ing their mouths an ominous wipe. Well now, whtft of
that ? Do you never wipe your mouth,.Well-Wisher 7 Or
have you a smeller that could find out for you that they
had been drinking? Or was that liquor yon inhaled that
wifich yon had drank beforehand? My reason for asking
is this: The young men you had reference to did not gu
to the Altoona House, as yon represent, they wont to the
Exchange Hotel, kept by John. Bowman, who I believe is
the proprietor. They did not" como out wiping their
months, they ca'me out smoking an excellent cigar, which
J. B. had furnished them with. Well-Wisher,' if you could
not sec more than twenty feet clear, you ought to hare
been in bed. Now, Well-Wisher, X will inform you how
tho twenty young m?n were led astray. You are aware
that they paraded through the principal streets of our
borough, to give the citizens ah opportunity Of admiring
their handsome engine, which they (the citizens) had so
generously bestowed upon the company. You are aware
that When they were playing In front of the Logan House,
they were all wef with the ruin and water from their ma
chine, then it was that Col. Woods, of the Altoona House,
g.>re the Citizen boys an invitation to come and take a
kindly smile, which I think pleased them-very much, for
they did manfully wipe their mouths, and gave three hcar
iy cheers and a tiger for Col. Woods, and then, like gallant
Firemen as they are, housed their handsome engine; and
then, if our reporter had not left so soon, he might have
seen several more going around town smiling very often, j
not being afraid of having their insides burned out, us they 1
had not seen Well-Wisher’s communication, or they would
have acted move careful—hut he w ill have to excuse them,
for they will endeavor to be more careful hereafVr. I I
would inform friend Well-Wisher that they are a core; a:;y J
organized as a Fire Company, not as aTcmperance Society,
although there ore some gentlemen of the above-named
society belonging to the company, whom we are glad to
recognize as brother Firemen, Now let us reason the
case—would it not have been better for Well-Wisher f..
have collected some live or more Well-Wisher’s like him
self, and instead of following the Company from place
to place, passing remarks, and finding such faults, as only
could bo_found by one laboring under the influence of that
stuff that makes a man wipe his mcffth. Would it not
have been bettor for him to have pone home (providing he |
could], and brought those noble Fireman two or three pails j

Gone—gone—gone! The last time wo seen Doe., we sur
mised from his appearance and conversation, and bis high

the scenery and the inhabitants in general. Well skilled
in tlie "healing art” as the Doctor is, he could not cure
the wound that cupid lhade, and like a wise man, called in
a clergyman who alone could prescribe an antidote. We
