TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 1871. 5 TO WILLIAMS- POUT. itnritf AiMjMiMiMuy ttf The Kvmin1 Ttbarnnh- 1 Wilmamsport, June 14, lSll. No more striking Illustration of the prog-regs of Pennsylvania could well be given than that fnrnlshed fy the varied scenes along the railroad route be tween rhlladelpUla and Williamsport. That portion (of the Pennsylvania Railroad which was formerly known m the Colombia Road furnishes the flrat Ulnk In the Journey. Being one of the first railways constructed In the United States, it still bears too 1U1UJ UJ IW9 I vul UiO fUV!4Uibj, uui bllCJ RIO) Uortnnately, now rapidly disappearing. When It was constrncted, the Idea of successfully using steam as a motive power was ranked as a possi bility rather thai as a probability, and the practi cal thine aimed at was not to build n approximately straight road for locomotives, ut a comfortable, easy-going, circumbendibus lorse railway with carves leading to convenient nd popular old tnrnplke taverns, and curves lead- og from the lands and barns of Influential old fogies Jwho had a particular horror of new-fangled Improve ments, as well as from hills and valleys requiring an innasual amount of cntting down or filling np. The partial rectification of this primitive system of engi neering has been slowly progressing for some years, jimt thorough reconstruction has been only yrecently attempted, and at this moment At is progressing so rapidly that soon a substantially new railway will be In operation for jnore than thirty miles leading westward from Phi ladelphia, affording such a marked Increase of faci lities through the combined nseof old and new Uracks, and such an admirably constructed line in Ithe entirely new portions (part of which is already in operation), that one of the oldest of American a-allroaas will speedily become in every sense and In leverv detail one of the Terr best. After pasting the line of the Philadelphia and Co j inmbia Railroad and approaching Ilarrisbarg, the old I (canal system looms prominently into view, stretch ing westward and northward along the line of the Susqnehanna and Its tributaries; and, while it still retains its utility for heavy freight at favorable easons. It recalls many reminiscences of the days Ksiata vhan a anaafl nf flvA mtlaa m.n finn S r MM m- mm UJJVm . mm I w luuva Mm mm, s the best resource for the speed of twenty-fire et per hour with which we were whirled along 'yesterday over the Pennsylvania (from Philadelphia to Zlarrlsburg), the Northern Central (from Harris burg to Sunbnry), and the Philadelphia and Erie Railroads (from Sunbury te Williamsport), making a trip of two hundred miles In eight hoars. The aspect of the country, and especially of the towns along the line, has unproved nearly as muoh as the facilities for travel. Hamlets have grown Into vlUasres. Tillages Into towns, towns Into cities, Ywhlle many spots unknown by special designations ( Vo our ancestors are now Important depots or sta 1 turns; and the work of Improvement still goes I bravely on, with the continued construction of new 1 railway branches, of additional tracks on old rall V ways, and of new industrial establishments. ? Throwing ont of view all material Interests, the Vide from Philadelphia to Williamsport offers to the lovers of varied, beautiful, and romantic Bcenery a iverles of splendid attractions. After the eye of the I tourist has lingered with delight upon the suburbs Lof Philadelphia, Chester Valley, and the broad ex- panse of fertility opened np In Lancaster county, Athere commences a grand succession of mountain I ridges, and picturesque gaps formed by the Susque f nanna, which, with Its tributaries, drains the cen ntral portions of the State ; the west branch extend lng from Sunbnry to Wllllamsport and far beyond, !, while the north branch forms the bed of the valley of Wyoming, and, with Its forks, traverses a Urge I portion of the tier of northern counties. f Along the banks of the Susquehanna the scenery assumes a new loveliness, its oroaa, piacia waters are framed into a glorious picture by the grand con tours of Clafk's Ferry, a short distance beyond Har rlsbnrg. Further on, the graceful curves harden Into severer majesty, and pallsade-Uke blurs rise from the stream in long stretches of regular rock, looking like the vestiges of the city wall girdling the home of some extinct giant race. At each succes sive step In ascending the river the scenery is hap pily diversified, the hills at times assuming gentle undulating curves and again rising in harsher lines Into proportions . of greater grandeur. The skies lent their best aid to heighten the charm by that succession of sunshine and shadow which reveals every beauty in the landscape rich with the opulent verdure of June. The wheat- fields gleamed with all the soft and luBtrous Inter- mingling shades that mark Its approaching ripeness, and the oats swayed softly in gentle ripples of sil vered greenery, while along the roadside a summer now of elder blossoms showed an unwonted luxuri ance. In the midst of the wide expanse of the waters of the Susquehanna, Innumerable tiny Islands were clothed In greenest grass or tangled thicket, and the luxuriant verdure spread on every Bide until even that most prosaic of all utilities, the tow path, brightened Into a gleaming thread of green braided into the silvery ribbons of the water upon either side. Near Northumberland a rugged land scape answers fittingly to the name, and the moun tain sides are ploughed with rifts that beneath the softening effect of distance show like belts of rich. warm brown gleaming frem between the fine forest trees, and te complete the faultless panorama a sunset of golden haze rested npon the mountains, changing them Into a purple, tint as rich as It Is rare, and ushering In that loveliest of all hours when over the green meadow stretches the golden rays of tha lingering Hunt, and the stars slowly marshal lhto rankrthrongh the shades of twilight. J. L. R SISMAKCK AND JAY COOKE. T.etter from the German Premier to. the American Hanker. Last, June Mr. Jay Cooke, who was then at "Gibraltar," Lake Erie, learning! through Baron Gerolt that Bismarck contemplated visiting this country, and especially desired retirement and rest, sent a cordial Invitation proffering to the Connt the hospitalities not only of hlsllsland home, but also those of "Ogantz," bis residence at Chelten Hills. Within a few days Mr. Cooke has received the following autograph letter from Prince Bis marck. Berlin, May 18, 18T1. Dear Sir: Your letter or the 18th of June last reached me on the 11th of July. If yon remember .now shortly that date was followed by the French declaration of war, you will excuse the otherwise anpardonable delay In answering so kind an Invita tion. Being about to embark In a diplomatic cam paign very likely to lead to an armed connlot, I felt doubly Impressed with the charms of your secluded Island and your delicate hospitality. Peace is now happily restored, but a great deal remains to be done at home, and I do not know when It will be given me to satlsiy my old longing for your country. Ac cept the assurances of my heartfelt gratitude and distinguished consideration. Von Bismihck. To J AT COOK. Esq., Philadelphia. Communication. To the Editor if The Evening Telegraph. It is hoped yon will pardon the writer In occupy ing yonr valuable columns with a few confirmatory remarks respecting Franklin B. Gowen, Esq., PreBl. dent of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Com- 'Song since, having become solicitous with refer ence to tne policies which would seem to govern the management of the railroad corporations of our state much uneasiness was occasioned on my part, noon the Inauguration of this gentleman, as to Whether tne uuud ,'' . , : would be adopted, or whether he would be hurried Song in the current of the age and drift into the errors and abominations which really appear to be leaguer the office of a railroad president, imnelled by this anxiety, the writer has for more a vear scrutinized the ac'lons of Mr. Qowen le'ptct SWcle. which he ha. Instituted the advancement of the lnurest of shareholders, m regards the principles by which he has been kerned in hi transactions with the patrons of the -Lmn over which he presides. lTPu gStoVtlut the results of this can ulus lnul.lion has successful demonstrated WHOM PHI LA DEL PITTA that a gentleman by which Is meant a man of honor Is par excellence qualified to represent the position of railroad president, and that the corpora tion which Is thus governed becomes divested or its objectionable features to the community, and la being unincumbered with the private Interests of officers, directors, and employes, assumes its true character of an Improved highway, securing to Its owners their dues, guaranteeing to Its patrons their rights, and becoming a powerful auxiliary to the industrial progress of the country. la his career he has presented an example of re form in their management, which must before long arouse the attention or the publlo to the fact or how little good la comparatively derived, and how muoh more could be attained under a proper guidance or these modern instruments of advancement; Indeed, it may be said Mr. Oowen occupies the enviable at titude of a model railroad president. In attesting this much, more is meant than the mere declaration would seem to Imply, because "to be noieit as this world goes, Is to be one man picked out of ten thousand." In fact, a model railroad president must adminis ter not the arbitrary regime of Napoleon with the Iron conscience of Nero, but he requires the quali ties or unusual preolslon, rare Intelligence, and marked decision joined to unflinching integrity, pro priety, and justice. In this position (which is made honorable only when honorably represented) a man's nature Is tested and developed. The power with whioh he Is Invested and the beguiling allurements with which he Is surrounded, the Influence which he wields tbrosgh the money-bags or the corporation, show him as be Is, undisguised, it may be, as a leudal tyrant, or as a Christian gentleman, who In his offi cial capacity is not unmindful of moral du les to wards his employes and those who are largely de pendent upon the use of the highway under hi i di rection. Ia conclusion, It must be admitted tha' Mr. Oowen, avoiding the exercise of arbitrary corporate authority, has, by a modest bearing and by an ad ministration of honesty and justice, acquired an Independent moral power which, la not begetting enmity, has, like the magnet, gathered around it the support of the community in evidence of Its own strength. In the practice of these virtues, this gentleman exemplifies the early teachings of his venerable and highly-respected father; remembering, also, that while "it is excellent to have a giant's strength, It is tyrannous to use It like a giant." One Who Asks no Favors. A BriLMKO Saved by a Fran Extinouishih The utility of fire extinguishers is dally becoming more apparent, ana at no distant day they will be regarded as essential in every well-ordered house. Of their real value In the event of fire, frem any canse, we have a case in point. During the thun der storm or Wednesday evening last, tne Chester Dock Mills, in Chester, Pa., owned by Messrs. Lewis & Parker, were struck by lightning. The building was set on fire, which the watchman attempted to extlngu eh, but not succeeding be blew the whistle of the factory. This attracted the attention or some or the employes, among whom was John Clough, who hastened to the mill, and procured one or the Union fire extinguishers belonging to the firm, by the aid of which he put out the fire, and saved the factory. The damage was but slight. Those wno believe in the old adage "that an ounce of preven tion is wdtth a pound of cure" should obtain one of these extinguishers without delay. .From the West jersey iTtes. CITY ITEMS. I. L.
