To one of the most distinguished of liv
ing American comedians the "Drawer" ia in
debted for tha following:
In consequence of some difSoultyin arriv
ing at an amicable conclusion in reference to
poliiieal matters, in a Western bar-room, one
of the parties, in the nsnal knife dispute that

That the schoolmaster is Tory much
abroad in some portions of onr common
country may be interred from the following
notice, which a correspondent saw at the
post office, in Montgomery, Alabama. It is
an extract from the printed circular of an
educator who proposed opening nn evening
school:
"Americans, recollect that it was by noc
turnal lucubrations that your own immortal
Franklin made the lightning of heaven sub
servient to his will, and with his fragile arm
confined in the gauzy shreds of a handker
chief that subtile yet irresistible fluid that
rent asunder the giant oaks of your primeval
forests and mocked mortal man in all his
wonted strength by frittering into atoms the
most impregnable fabric of his inventive
genius. ,

Concerning the "Form of Solemnization
of Matrimony, as it is called in the Episco
pal Church, or the "Sacrament of Marriage,"
in the Church of Rome, or simply the "Mar
, riage Contract," as it is entitled in the com
mon law of the State, there seems to obtain
in the State of Nebraska some sort of nuptial
arrangement peouliar to that region. So, at
least, we infer from the following advertise
ment in one of the organs of publid opinion
publibhed in Dakota City:

The temporary inconvenience frequently
experienced by gentlemen who give them
selves up to the enjoyment of afavorite beve
rage was recently illustrated in Stewart
county, Tennessee, where a prosperous old
farmer named Knmfeldt had a habit of attend
ing regularly the County Court at Dover, but
who stldom turned his face homeward until
he had swallowed more whisky than his skin
could well hold or his legs oould conveniently
carry. On one occasion he got on bis level
early, and about the middle of a hot July
afternoon started for home. He had not gone
far, however, when he was seized with an
uncontrollable desire to take a nap. lie dis
mounted from his horse, turned him loose to
graze, and rolled himself into a fenoe corner.
He was Bleeping very sweetly when he was
espied by a buzzard which was sailing about
the vioinity, hunting for something to eat.
Smaller and smaller grew his circles, cau
tiously taking observations. At last, but still
in some doubt, the bird, lit on the ground
near its expected feast. About this time
Humfeldt became aware that something was
going on, and he partially opened one eye
and saw the buzzard, but still too drunk to
take any active measures to drive it away.
He, however, kept a close watch. The buz
zard strutted around him, all the time in
specting Rumfeldt closely and cautiously to
ascertain positively that he was dead. He
finally became satisfied that the corpus before
him was indeed a carcass, and, consequently,
"his meat;" whereupon he advanced delibe
rately to Ilumfeldt's head and gave him a
severe peck in the face. This aroused Ilum
feldt, and striking out lazily with his, hand to
prevent a repetition of the attack, he ex
claimed, "Look 'ere; you're a 1-e-e-tle too
smart I ain't dead yet.
A bright young priest of the lloman
Catholic Church relates to the Drawer an in
stance of the naiveness and self-confidence
of an Amerioan firl, who, just before the
reoent revolution in the Holy City, was pre
sented to the Pope. Of course she was
charmed with the simple and benignant man
ner of the Pontiff, and, gathering confidence
as the conversation proceeded, finally said:
"I think that the people of the United
States are the most religious people in the
world."
"Why so, my child?" mildly asked the
Pope.
"Because," answered the young lady, "they
have more denominations"
His Holiness smiled a little smile, but
evinced no desire to discuss the proposition.
During the late unpleasantness an impor
tant part of naval detail between vessels of
the same squadron was necessarily dene by
signal. One of the humorous results of this
signal way of doing things, as it occurred
when a part of one of our squadrons was
lying oil Edenton, North Caroliaa, is related
by a naval officer, as follows: A message
was sent from the shore to Captain Maoomb,
commander of the fleet, announcing that the
ceremony of public baptism would be per
formed at two o'clock. The captain, ever cour
teous and considerate, supposed that some
of his officers might wish to witness this little
episode in the tedious monotony of block
ading, and directed that the fact sheuld be
communicated by signal to the other vessels.
The naval signal-book was forthwith brought
out and searched, but the word "baptism"
was not to be found. Here was a quandary,
and time was rapidly passing, but the captain
was not to be foiled. The quartermaster of
the watch was set to work, and in a few
minutes the Lright-oolored signal-flags of the
Shamrock were at the mast-head, and ' the
astonished officers of the other ships read:
"There will be 'religious diving' on shore at

We doubt the aoonracy of the statement
of that prejudiced New England man wuq
said that he "ledged the most pwin train

fifteen minits for divorce." If anything cpuli
justify such a supposition it might be the
popularity in that region of such little emana
tions of genius as tee following:

Sealed proposals to furnish Timber and other
materials fer the Navy for the fiscal year eng
ine June 80, 1S72, will be received at this Bu
reau until 12 o'clock M. of the 30tfc of Jane
Instant, at which, lime the bids will be
opene4.
The proposals must be addressed to the
Chief of the Bureau of Construction an
Repair, Navy Department, Washington, and
must be endorsed " Proposals for Timber,
etc., for the Navy," that they may be dis
tinguished from ordinary business letters.
To prevent confusion, and facilitate the open
ing of the bids, parties bidding for supplies at
several yards will enclose their bids in separate
envelopes, each indorsed with the name of the
yard for which the bid is made.
Printed schedules for such classes as parties
deal ia and intend to bid for, together with
instructions to bidders, rlvinir the forms of pro
posal, ot guarantee, and of certificate of guaran
tors, with priuted forms of offer, will be fur
nished to Buch persons as desire to bid, on ap
plication to the Commandants of the respective
Navy Yards, and those of all the yards on
application to the Bureau.
The Commandant of each Navy Yard, and the
purchasing Paymaster for each station, will
have a copy of the schedules of the other yards,
for examination only, in order that persons who
intend to bid may judge whether It Is desirable
to make application for any of the classes of
those yards.
The proposals must te for the whole of a
class, but the Department reserves the right to
reduce the whole class, should the interest of
the Government require it, before the execution
of the contract. All applications for informa
tion, or for the examination of samples, must
be made to the Commandants of the respective
yards.
The proposal must be accompanied by a cer
tificate from the Collector of Internal Revenue
for the district in which the bidder resides, that
he has a license to deal In the articles for which
he proposes; and, by direction of the Depart
merit, bids or offers will be received only from
parties who are bona fide dealers in, or mamt
facturers of the articles ttiey offer to furnish.
The guarantors must becertitied by the Assessor
of Internal Revenue for the district in which
they reside.
The contract will be awarded to the person
who makes the lowest bid and gives the guar
antee required by law, the Navy Department,
however, reserving the right to reject the lowest
bid, or any which it may deem exorbitant.
Burettes in the full amount will be required to
sign the contract, and their responsibility must
be certified to the satisfaction of the Navy De
partment. '
As additional security twenty per centum will
be withheld from the amount of the bills until
the contracts shall have been completed, and
eighty per centum of the amount of each bill,
approved in triplicate by the Commandants of
the respective yards, will be paid by the Pay
master of the station designated in the contract,
or, if none Is specified, by the Paymaster of the
station nearest the yard where the goods arc
delivered, within ten days after the warrant for
the same shall have been passed by the Secretary
of the Treasury.
