City Affairs.
The Board of Guardians met yesterday
and agreed to ask Councils for $12,000 for
extensions to the wash-bouses cf the insane
department and hospital. The manufactories
of the institution turned out $3182 worth of
good this month. Mr. Parker, as usual, ob
jected to the purchase of a horse first, be
cause the, animal was distempered, and
second, because Mr. Parker never had a
chance to use the beast. Mr. Parker made a
speech (be always does), in which ho varied
considerably from the point under discussion.
He wound np by charging Mr. Collins with
''hobnobbing" with the females about the
establishment. This charge instantly
provoked a verbal row, in which each
and every member took a hand,
or a tongue rather. Finally Mr. Parker,
being rather closely pressed, admitted that he
did not mean anything wrong by the word
'hobnobbing," but only that the member
alluded to "was guilty of a Frenchy polite
ness;" that was all. This quieted matters,
and the board adjourned.
Garrett Hendricks, of Montgomery
county, was held in $1000 bail for perjury by
Alderman Dongherty. It was charged that
defendant swore falsely at a hearing before
another Alderman some time ago.
The managers of the Industrial Home for
Blind Women held their annual meeting yes

THE BAPTIftT PUBLICATION SOCIETY.
Interestingstatistics of t lie Work Doueby
(be souletjr from lis ui-gaulzatlou.
From the Chiia(lo Journal, Kay 10.
The "American Baptist Publication Society"
met this mdminz in rarwell Hall. The attend
ance was Very large, the body of the hall being
filled, and several hundred persons eccupylnj
the first fallerv.
It appears that this society is composed of
the old American and Foreign Bible Society and
the Publication Society a union which is
scarcely completed yet. The Publication
feocietv was organized la Washington
In 1!$24, and was for several years
knowii as the Baptist Ueueral Tract Society.
In 18Z1 it took the name t the American
Baptifi, Publication Society. Tbe general object
of iLJb organization, as denned by the constitu
tion, is "to promote evangelical religion by
meatis of the Bible, the printing press, colport
ageJ and the Sunday-school." In 1844 Its assets
wme reported at a little over tlOJO; In 1871,
'I ' 000. Of this t75,0O0 it a permanent lnveat
D m"i for benevolent work. I.at year tbe society
IwluLed 209,921,49 pages. The recsipU in all
department last year were 1332,149. It was thel
first In this ouatry to employ the missionary!
colporteur. This branch of the work Is a most
important one, as (t reaches the people in their'
homes wltfe the Bifcle, tracts, religious,
papers, and destitute neighborhoods with
the preaching .of the gospel. Daring the!
year there was.ssued of books, tracts, etc.,1
8,041,489 copies, equal to 9,821,429 ISino
pages. This exceeds the issue, of last year by
5,148,827 pages. The society has printed, of
books, tracts, etc., since its organization,
38.413,770 copies, containing matter equal to.
1,702,947.241 pages in 18mo. The whole number
of publication on the society's catalogue at the'
present time is 1082, of which 534 are boand
volumes. Three hundred and eight new
Sunday-schools have been organized dur
ing the year, and 600 converts have been
baptized by colporteurs. At the last annual
meeting, held in Philadelphia, the name of the
f oclrty was chaoed to that of the "Bible and
'Publication Society." The receipts in the busi
ness department for toe year ending March 1,
1871, are 274,439 W9. -being $19,925-09 more than
the business receipts. of last year. The receipts
in the missionary department are 57,709-60,
being 9574-59 less than the benevolent receipts
last year. This decrease is occasioned by the
fact that two of the agency diDtricts have been
without collecting agents during the last year.
The total receipts in both departments are
332,149 09, being 110,350 -60 more than the total
receipts of 1 ast year.
DR. DOLLIXGEIU
Increasing Streiijg&li of Jli Position Ad
herence of the South (icrmau Catholics.
The German Correspondent of May 6 says
that the movement headed by Dr. Dollinger
continues to gain ground in Southern Germany.
Professor Frledrtch, who belongs to the court
by right of his position has made a personal
application to the King of Bavaria for permis
sion to continue his spiritual functions.
Tbe question has been referred to the Minis
ter oi Public Worship. Tbe students of Munich
E reposed to arrange a torchlight procession in
onor of Dr. Dollinger, but he declined the honor
with thanks, as he bad never accepted such
compliments, and wished no demonstration of
the kind to be made at present. It is said that
be intends not to lecture at tbe University du
ring next term, but to resume his courses in the
winter. The students of Munich are signing an
address approving of his views, which is to be
forwarded to the other universities of (iermany
and Switzerland. It is said that the
clergy of the Court have been
given to understand that, though no
wish is entertained to interfere with their eccle
siastical views or position, they will do well not
to join in any public declaration against Dr.
Dollinger, in case such a step should be con
templated by the rest of the clergy, as by doing
so they would show a want of respect for their
superior. Such a step could not be demanded
by the Bishop, as, if it were, the declaration
would lose its voluntary character. The news
that Lord Acton is about to leave for England is
unfounded, as be Intends to remain with his old
teacher and friend during the present crisis. In
tbe meantime eighty Catholic parishes have sig
nified their approval of Dr. Dolllnger's views.
Professor Berchtold has published, in the form
of a pamphlet, a commentary on the paper he
presented to tbe Munich faculty of law on the
dogma of the infallibility of the Pope. The Ba
varian bishops are about to meet at Eichstadt
for the purpose of forwarding a common
letter to tbe Pope. Father Hyacinthe has ad
dressed from Home a letter to Dr. Dollinger,
in which be says the time of words is past and
that of action come. The letter terminates:
"Courage, great and noble heart! Be blest for
having offered yourself spontaneously to the
danger for the House of Israel. The strong
ones have disappeared from among us, and have
gone to rest 'ceeeaverunt fortes in Israel et
quieverunt;' but Jehovah has raised you in your
old days for new combats and new victories."
... A number of Neapolitan priests say, in
an address to Dr. Dollinger: "The day is, per
haps, not far off when Italy, now restored to
life by national unity and political liberty, hav
ing obtained poBseesion of her own Rome by the
disinterested and powerful support of your
great, free, and learned Germany, will be able to
accomplish her wish during centuries, to eman
cipate her people and her clergy from degene
rate political Popery, and to unite her great
moral and political destinies to those of the
people and clergy of loyal and Christian Ger
many. That day will be Ihe day of the com
plete triumph of faith and science over the
aberrations of the Papal theocracy and atheistic
philosophy."

This machine is entirely different irom the old
style Beer Pump. It performs Its own work, and
requires no labor. The liquors are forced np from
the cellar to tbe bar-room by means of a pressure of
air made by force of water, and can be drawn Just
as clear as directly from the barrel.
Among the many advantages claimed for thla
machine are. that the beer or ale never becomes
flat, and can be drawn as cold as ice water with very
email expense ot ice.
The Apparatus can always be seen at my place In
operation, or at any of the principal soloons in thla
city. 0 0 stuthm'
