THE CONVENTION.
The Feeling Among the Delegates and
Visitors A strong Ticket and a Uootl
Platform The Chairman of the State
Central Committee-Srrr untie of the Can
didates. ,
From Our Own Oorrepondnt.
IlAURisni-no, May 17, 1571.
In peace, harmony, and quietness the con
vention, which commenced its sitting at 12
o'clock to-day, closed lta labors at h)i o'clock.
"With the exception of the Auditor General,
there wag but little Interest manifested except
by the immediate friends of the candidate?.
Indeed, up to a late hour the best wire-pullers
were at sea as to who the candidates for the
position of Surveyor-General would be when the
convention met. The friends of Mr. Smedley
were active and In earnest, but when the name
of Colonel R. B. Beatb, the hero of a hundred
battles, and who lost a leg In the service of his
country, was announced, tlio fueling that he
tvas the man for the place commenced to crop
out among the delegates from the rural dis
tricts, and the aspect of a Hairs changed to a
degree of certainty most refreshing to the
Colonel's friends. Still the Thiladulphians held
on to their man, and succeeded in securing a
little of the outside pressure. It was unavail
ing, hQwever; and Bcath was nominated, with
nearly if not quite -a full third of his vote to
" spare. That he will suit the people of the Com
monwealth there can be no question, and no nr
that tte affair is over the delegates will unite in
Baying that no more cmluently proper aud fitting
choice could have been made.
The nomination of Dr. V. M. Stanton w? a
foregone conclusion. Foregone, because the
caucus held last night hiul decided the question
tcyond the shadow of a doubt. General Allen
and Mr. llooten, his opponents, gave up the
contest in a philosophical manner, but their
friends stood by them in the convention, not
withstanding. "Iu this I may observe that,
contrary to the usual custom, there were no com
plaints or quibbling after the a flair was over.
At the moment of this writing the "Uncondi
tional Club" is tendering the nominees the com
pliment of a serenade. I presume that speeches
will be made, but if I mistake not they will have
but little influence on the men who have been
here since yesterday, and have known the com
fort of hanging on a hook in lieu of stretching
themselves on a downy couch.
"Put me In rny little bed"
had considerable significance last night, because
there were no "little beds" (or big ones either) to
get into. This crowding was caused by the large
number of delegates to the Grand Encamp
ment of the Order of Odd Fellows. Of course,
the Harrisburg hotel proprietors have done the
best they could for their guesis, but best is poor
enough in a thing like this.
The platform laid down by the convention
meets with unqualified approval, except that
portion which refers to General Grant as the
candidate for the Presidency in 1873. It created
considerable discussion in the convention, not
that Grant was not popular or anything of that
kind, but because there was so much ' time to
spare between now and the time for making the
Presidential nomination. The resolution went
through with a rush, though, and Grant 6tands
to-day the unqualified choice of Pennsylvania
for President in 1873.
The little resolution concerning the modest
and, I may now unhesitatingly add, retiring
Geary was to be expected, and no particular
Importance can be attached to It. By the way,
his speech the other evening, when he so frankly
and positively denied that he wanted an olllce
of any kind, was the most peculiar I have ever
beard him make. If the "Klug's English" ever
had such a thing as a soul, it is crushed and
torn to ribbons now, and Governor Geary is
guilty of the sacrilegious crime. But no matter;
he will not be dragged out (he says he don't
want to be) to fill any office. Just here it
occurs to me that he rather hinted that he
might be induced to take the Gubernatorial chair
for another (third) term. "Can such things be,
and o'ercome us like a summer's cloud, with
out our special wonder ?"
The other planks in the platform nre con
sidered sound and strong.
There was considerable excitement over the
chairmanship of the State Central Committee,
but after an hour or two had been spent in
arguing pro and con. in regard to the manner In
which he should be appointed, his selection was
left to the chairman of the convention (Mr.
Elliott) and the two candidates. Up to this
writing no selection has been made, although it
looks as though Samuel F. Barr, Esq., of Har
risburg, would be the man. Mr. Barr Is one of
the smartest and shrewdest politicians in the
State, and has been the private secretary of
Senator Cameron for some years. But this is
all surmise, and to-morrow may change the
case.
The "Unconditional Club" of Philadelphia,
under the leadership of the Indefatigable and
unconquerable William K. Leeds, has been the
most prominent feature ot the whole affair.
Headed by Beck's Band who, by the way, the
Goveraor complimented very highly for their
fifteen-months service in the 23th Regiment
Pennsylvania Volunteers the club has been
ubiquitous, and rendered every scene enjoyable
by its enthusiasm and good conduct.
Bat it waxes late, and this epistle must close.
