Mr. Dow was one of the pioneers of the temperance movement, and a discourse of great Interest may be expected. Kctn'a "Othello." A correspondent of the New York Clipper gives the following Interesting reminiscences of Kean's performance of Othello: 1More than a year since I accidentally encoun ered an old gentleman who had once seen the elder Kean perform Othello at a theatre In Dublin. The following was the description given me, as well as I remember It: I did not get to the theatre until the laoond act was on Em'i entranoe to Deidemona from the ship waa the moit perfect exhibition of stair effeot I ever witnessed, liis eager at en, outstretched arms and 4aaoing eye were things! shall never Bee again. Uis apnarh to Camo "Michael, look you to the guard to night,' had in it the command of the general and the reqaest ef a trusting friend. But when ne dashed on afterward and threw up the swords to stop the affray, bis aotion had something in it like the boumii of & Hoa int the old Roman circus. How indignation fairly blazed in hla voice, as, alter swiftly and hotly recounting the enormity of the offense his officers had committed, he said : "' ris mon strous!" The reproof to (Jaseio was exquisitely musical. He walked slowly and majestically up to the fallen lieu tenant, observed him attentively as he hung his bead, paused for a long time, as if struggling between the promptings of love and those of dut y, and finally, in a low, eweet, sad voice, mellow and tender as a llnte, he called to him "Oassio!" The other, with an effort, looked up. "I love thee'1 Cassio clasped his hands, as if in hope of forgiveness "but never more be officer of mine!" A wail Of anguish broke from the degraded and disappointed Soldier: his general quickly turned his face aside, as if to bide bis own griof, and went slowly up the stage. The third act was supernatural, Nothing can be imagined so effective as was its alternation of light and shade. All the first speech ea were subdued and quiet. Everything about it then re minded me of the calm before a storm. The first eleotrio flash followed the warning of Iago, "My lore', beware of jealousy." Yet even the speech succeeding, "Way, why Is this f Tbink'st thou I'd lead a life of jealousy 1" eto., was, as it were, laughed through; though I mn-a confess there was an nnderourrent of uneasiness in this jooularity perfectly apparent. But when the tempest burst it was appalling. A a icy perspiration broke out all over me. When Othello seized lago by the throat and looked into his eyes, even the traitor's face seemed to te scorched by the terrible saze. He writhed, bold devil as he was, under such furv. My words are absolutely powerless to give the faintest idea of the scene. The old gentleman who witnessed the above per formance lives In Baltimore, and has seen many Othellos since; bathe says the only one wnlcn reminded lilm in any respect of the pewer and beauty of Edmund Kean's was Mr. E l ward Daven port's. One especial point of resemblance was Mr. Davenport's delivery of the speech containing the words: "I could have borne that too well, very well," etc. I forget how It begins, but It Is la Act IV. 14 Kean's walk was something marvellous. It's a pity our tragedians do not walk, oetter. Davenport's, I think, is perfect; but he la almost alone In tale pecu liarity. Booth's is ungraceful in nearly all his prts, Adams' is awkward, Barren's U stagey, James Wal laces Is well enough in the Drat acts ef the "Iron Mask" and one or two other plars, Mayo's is next to Davenport's. But most of our uotors, In my opinion, tread the stage by no means as gracefully as they might. W.M. "The Soldier' Daughter." In connection with the performance of the comedy of The Soldier's Daughter, announced for Mr. Adam Everly's benefit to-morrow even ing at the Arch Street Theatre, the following Information about the play and its author will bo of Interest: Andrew Cherry, the author of The SoUier'a Dawih tr, was an actor of repute upen the London stage, and from the practical knowledge of the clap-traps of tils profession, availed himself of a time to pro duce this play when England was In a perfect blaze of patriotism ; when every man was a volunteer, and every boy a soldier, anxious to defend his native land from the threatened invasion of Bonaparte. At Buch a time, with such a theme, upon every tongae, not to have applauded patriotic speeches, uttered by a young and handsome woman, would have been worse than treason; the author, therefore, risked no failure, for he had carried hla audience by a coup ie main. No play has been more roughly handled by critics, or more warmly applauded by tne audience fuuteiu bled to witness Us representation; and, although the characters belong to a past age, Governor Ueartall, Widow C'heerly, and Timothy Quaint, will aiways keep It ;ainoiig the catalogue of acting Plays, the dashing style of the laughing young widow making her a favorite part wlili actresses of eminence! to select for their debut, before a strange audience ; and improbable as the incidents may be, they never fall to meet the approbation of the audi ence, who, having eDjoyed a hearty laugh, are not so captious when leaving the theatre, as to Una fault With the author of their amusement.
