John Fetter hns been arrested, charged with
striking Avery I). Putnam, a nerclunt, such a
blow on the head with a car hook in a Broadway
car last night that death is probable. John Cun
tlneham. driver of the car, was arrested for
alleged collusion with Fostc.
Indian Suj-.iiIIch.
The bids for supplying a very large quantity
of clothing, dry goods, and hardware for the
me of the Indian were opened to-day by Gene
ral Taiker, Commissioner of Iudian AfUir., In
presence of Colonel Cox and J. 11. Delano, re
presenting the Secretary of the Interior, and of
the Indian Peace Commission. One huudred
bidder were- present.
There were several bids from Philadelphia, St.
Louis, Clevt-lnnd, and Qinkertown, besides a
large number from New York. The purchasing
Committee will meet to-morrow and the day
after, if necessary, to examine the samples and
make the awards.

Rejection of the Philadelphia Proposi
tion by the Coal Miners.
Fottsville, April 27. At a meeting held hero
this afternoon by the Executive Committee of
the W. 13. A., the propositions made by the ope
rators at the Philadelphia meeting were re
jected. Destructive Fire at Itutztown.
Rxadino, Pa., April 27. The new and exten
sive brick foundry and machine shop of Zeclin
& Ero., at Kutztown, in this county, was en
tirely destroyed by fire this morning. Tbo
origin of tbo fire is unknown. Loss about
$20,000. Insured for 14,a0.

John Hoaob, who hai been missing from

(Delaware) yesterday afternoon. It was sup
posed that t ho deceased had met with violence,

The Coroner's jury rendered yesterday a
verdict of suicide ia tbo case of Frederick
Lndwig, found dead on Liter's farm. A
bottle of laudanum was found in his pocket,
ana ttie von mortem showed that death re
sulted from an overdose of this medioine.
The four young First Ward rascals wore
yesterday held by Alderman Kerr for their
appear unco at court.
The Caledonian Club has taken the initia
tive in the movement to celebrate the cente
nary of Hir Walter Scott in August next. The
celebration id not to be confined to any na
tionality. All those who respect the genius
of the great romancer are invitea to partici
pate.
Domestic Affairs.
A colored fcberilT in Louisiana has just
recovered 1000 damages from a saloon
which refused him refreshments on Account
of his color.
President Grant arrived at Ilarrisburg at
half-past 10 o'clock last niyht, and is the
guest of J. D. Cameron. He will proceed to
VYaj;mngton at noon to-day.
Dry winds continue to prevail in the
central and northern portions Of California,
and the crops will likely receive therefrom
considerable damage.
II. M. Kennedy, a farmer, aged GO years,
residing in colon township, Ohio, was, yes
terday morning, killed by his son, the latter
alleging that the horrible act was done in
Eelf-delense.
In the Criminal Court of Washington,
D. C, yesterday, the jury bronght in a ver
diet of (,Tiilty of raurder in the first degree
against Horatio Balster, for the killing of
Joseph James, a gambler, in lebrnary last.
A common toot place between some
colored ien and a party of citizens, under
the command of the (sheriff of Robeson
county, N. C, on Wednesday, during which
two of the latter were killed and several
others wounded.
Hon. B. GarEelde, Delegate to Congress
trorn v ascirgton Territory, delivered an in
teresting and hiohly instructive lecture on
"The New Northwest," at the Masonic Temple
in Ha minor, last evening, to a large and in
teilicent audience.
Mrs. La.ira Fair, convicted at San Fran
cisco on V, ednewday of the murder of Colonel
A. r. Crittenden, will not be sentenced until

siring the intervening time to prepare an
application for a new trial.
The joint caucus of the Republican mem
tern of the Pennsylvania Legislature mot lust

Two colored graduates of the Howard
University of the District of Columbia yes
terday applied for admission to the bar of the

A report from the Committee on Highways
Ctrcerning paving Dickenson street caused
considerable discussion of the merits of
j .avements, ending in the triumph of the
Belgian.
Special order of the day, an ordinance to
create a loan of ."00,000 for paving Broai
street with improved pavement, was discussed.
Mr. lackel offered nn amendment to in
clude Market street. Subject postponed for
the present.
A communication from JLuward Armstrong,
concerning additional educational accommo
dations in tho Twenty-second ward, was re
ferred to tho Committee on Schools.
llesolntiona from Common Council were
eppropriately. aoted upon, and Council ad
journed. Hmmon Hrancft. A resolution was adopted
requesting the Legislature to pass tbe aot im
mediately transferring tho receipts from
tavern licenses to the counties in which they
aro collected.
Mr. Weplen, chairman of the Committee on
Highways, reported a resolution to pave
Latterly and other Btreets; one to open Par
risb street, from Twenty-fourth to Twenty
ninth, and Thirty-third street, from Walnut
to tbe Almshouse grounds; one to pave Cedar
Btreet, from Ann to Cloarlleld. All agreed to.
Mr. Allen, chairman of the Committee on
Surveys, reported an ordinance creating tbe
t fTico of Inspector of Sowers and Inlets, the
salary to be ipuoou. I ostponed.
Also, an ordinance authorizing tho con
struction of Bewers on Sansom. Thirtv-
seventh, and Irwin streets.
Also, one awarding the contraot for the
erection of the bridgo over the Schuylkill at
i eirnionrt to John W. Mnrphv. J. 1. Ken
nedy, and the Pennsylvania ltailroad Com
pany. A communication was receivod from Mr.
Murphy, declining to accept his part of the
contract, but offering to build the bridgo
entire for the sum named. Tho communica
tion was referred back to the Committee on
Surveys.
Mr. Allen, chairman of the Committee on
Election Divisions, reported a resolution to
change the boundary line of the Seventh and
Lleventh divisions of tbe Lighteenth ward;
one to divide the Second division of the Four
teenth ward; also, an ordinance to change
the boundary line of the Seventh and Eighth
divisions of the Twenty-aoventh ward; one to
change the boundary line of the Seventh divi
sion of the Fifteenth ward; also, an ordinance
making a new division out of the Tenth
division of the First ward, and a number of
others, all of which were agreed to.
Mr. Calhoun offered a resolution directing
the Committee on Highways to report an
ordinance authorizing the laying only a car
riage drive, sixty feet wide, on Broad streot,
from Coates to 1 ederal. Keferred.
An ordinance was offered by Mr. J. S.
Allen appropriating $20,000 for the erection
of four sections of market -bouses on Girard
avenue, from Elm to Otis street. Passed.
Mr. Wagner called up the resolution to
publish a loan bill of 500,000 for the further
extension of the Philadelphia Gas Worka.
Mr. btockdale moved to refer the resolu
tion to tbe Committee on Finance, with in
structions to confer with the Gas Trustees,
in order to have the proposed expenditures
item by item.
General Wagner offered an amendment
that the Finance Committee be further in
structed to inquire what disposition has beea
made by the Trustees of the $1,000,000 loan
of laRt year.
Tbe subject was discussed at considerable
length, and much time was consumed.
Finally both motions were voted down. The
resolution was then agreed to unanimously.
A number of bills from Select Council
w ere considered and passed, when, on motion
of Mr. Hall, the water bill was made the
special order at the next meeting of the
Chamber.
Mr. Bardsley offered an ordinance autho
rizing the paving of Lehigh arenue, from
Frankford road to Broad street, with rabble
pavement. Agreed to.
