THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH P3IL IDflLl'M A, SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 1871. ii WVaiCAli AT PHAMATIC. mia Ulavor "KaaMHad." ' "Rosalind," in As You Like It, la one of the most graceful and fascinating among the many fascinating women who people the theatre of Shakespeare. She is, like the play itself, far removed from the commonplaces of common life, and j et there Is no character created by Shakespeare which is more true to human nature or which combines more perfectly the real and the ideal. The refinement, the qaalnt n ess, the poetry of "Rosalind's" character de mand peculiar qualifications In the actress who undertakes its representation. These qualifica tions Miss Glover possesses in an eminent de gree and her beauty, her Intelligence, and her refinement of style did her good service last evening when she attempted the part for the first time iu the presence of a very large audience. Miss Glover's personation was marked by a thorough appreciation of the character, which had evidently been stu died with unusual care, and an apparent lack of confidence in her abilities to do justice to her conception alone prevented the performance from being a brilliant success. If the entire performance had been equal to the first scene, or if the lines had all been read in the same tnanner as was the epilogue, Miss Olover's "Rosalind' would have deserved unqualified praise. During a portion of the play, however, she was not at her ease, and a slight embarrass ment Of manner and an indistinctness of utter ance matted an otherwise excellent persona tion. When Miss Glover has played the charac ter a few times, aud made herself entirely at home in it, her "Rosalind'' will be a thoroughly artistic performance, the merits of which will undoubtedly be cordially recognized by the public. Miss Glover is anactrosi of such real ability that she owes it to herself to endeavor to correct some of her imperfections of style. One of the most important of these Is an indis tinctness of utterance, and an English habit of running words together in such a manner that it is impossible for the audience to under stand what U said. Fart of this comes from a natural lisp, but that it is not impossible to overcome it is proved by the fact that Miss Glover frequently does go through an entire scene without her lisp being apparent. The epilogue last evening was a beautiful piece of reading, and it would' be difficult to Improve upon it. The other parts of the play were well sus tained, Mr. Davenport personating the "melan choly Jaqucs ' as he alone can do, and Mr. Thome making a capital representative of "Orlando." Mr. Lennox piaved the part of "Touchstone" in excellent style, and Miss Lily Vining Davenport sustained the character of "Celia" iu a creditable manner. Tha CUT Amuaenienca.
