SIM IV.
The Attempt to Asnntnu.i Henor Zorrilia.
Madrid. (Feb. 19) currmpondence London Times.
"We are completely satisfied with our work,
and intend to continue in the same road."
8uch wan the literal text of an anonymous letter
received by tbe unhappy widow of Mirhl
Prim on the day hit remains were carried to
the Atocba Church. It wa no heartless hoax.
It was a message of warning to tbe other public
men who bad taken a prominent part in the
elevation of King Amadeo to the throne. Some
of these men treated it as a joke, but others
did not. Among tbe latter were the ex-President
Kuis Zorrilia. lie took tbe warning espe
cially to himself, as be had borne a very conspi
cuous f-bare in tbe Kng-making.
Yet-terdiiv morning be received a verbal mes
sage that if be would grant an interview, tbe
parties deciring it would communicate to him
important revelations respecting the authors of
the astat siuation of bis friend Marshal Prim,
whom the tribunals of justice have not been
able to discover, though they are constantly
arresting persons "on suspicion." Being
excessively anxious to do what in him lay
to clear up this tearful mystery, Zorrilia said he
Should be willing to see tbe parties in question
in Lis own hout-e. Calle Sao Mateo, in the even
ing. He was told that would not do. They
would not come to his house, but would meet
him at any other be might appoint. He fixed
10 at night, in tbe bouse of a friend
living in Calle Pez. Punctual to his appoint
ment, he went, and stayed till nearly 2
o'clock this morning. It is needless to say
no one came. He was accompanied by his par
ticular friend Don Luis Hernandez. Seaor
Zorrilia remarked to bis friend, "Lo presentia;
tstavio venido," '"I thought as much, we are
'sold' (duped)." A few yards further on and
they came to tbe Calle San Roque, a narrow
street which opens on the Calle Pez. From a
dark corner in this street two men emerged,
crossed the sidewalk, and fired at them. The
balls, of which there must have been at least 7,
to judge by the marks they made in the wall of
a currier's shop, passed close behind them,
but fortunately without touching them. With
great presence of mind, Senor Hernandez pulled
out bis revolver, and, firing it twice, ran after
the assassins, who fled along the Calle San
Roque, leaving their trabuco (blunderbuss) on
the ground. Senor Zorrilia and some police
men, who tbls time were quickly on the scene,
watched all tbe avenues by which persons could
leave the houses until daybreak, when a large
force of police searched the houses. They have
arrested lour men and one woman; but whether
these are the guilty parties or not I am unable
at present to say, Great excitement prevaLs in
the city,
