Mayor Sturgis, of Meridian, Miss., was

tendering Lis resignation.
An attempt wus made on Monday night
to throw the Ashland train off the track at
Mahnnoy l'lain, Ta., by placing a cross-tie
on tbe track. Fortunately it was disoovered
in time to prevent an accident.
Later particulars from Meridian, Miss.,
relative to tho shooting of Justice Brauilette,
Et t forth that six colored men were subse
quently shot and killed as the result of the
action of one of their number in summarily
despatching the justice.
Mr. Lopez Huberts, Spanish Minister to
tho United States, was officially received by
the President yesterday, and the occasion
was marked with unusual interest. In pre
senting his credentials from the King of
Spain, Mr. Jloberts expressed the most kindly
feeling for this country.

first order, issued yesterday, he invokes co
operation in the work of maintaining order,
declaring that tranquillity alone will restore
the prosperity of France.
Bismarck is preparing a ciroJar ad
dressed to the diplomatic agents of Germany
in foreign countries, reviewing the history of
the war and the changed political position of
the German Empire, lie comments with
great severity upon the attitude of England
during the war.

In 1870-71, of which twenty begin In the week Feb
ruary 12-19. Those lectures are Intended for gradu
ates of colleges, teachers, and other competent
adults (men or women). A circular describing them

THE LAW SCHOOL has been reorganized this
year. It has seven instructors, and a library of
16,i oo volumes. A circular explains the new course
of study, the requisites for the degree, and the cost
of attending tbe school. The second half of tbe
year begins February 13.
