THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPil PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, MaRCH 3. 1871. A MESAQEIIIE OVERBOARD. Hirnmrr FipIokIob Cttmth Drowned unit an OMrlch Kllled-An Old nhfnnmi la a rutic lMre. The St. Louis Democrat of Wednesday has the following: The steamer Henry Yaejrer made her appear ance In this port yesterday a portion of her cargo consisting of Van Atnburic's Mennjjerie, vtbichfhe brought all the way from New Or leans, and which was en route for Carthage, Illinois. A packet for Keokuk was wanted ou which to Iran sthip the material and the com pany, tie four-footed and the two-footed ani mals and birds-the camel, ostriches, etc. and the enpe which contained them. The l!ob Koy was to leave for the desired port, and accordingly a haricuin was struck, tho icshlpmciit made, oDd the bont started ou her trip. There were eleven wasrons. with two horses to each, nnd in all ten p:iiengers connected with the e-lmw. The Kol) lloy reached thejfoot of Washington avenue, w bena loud report was heard on board, and a column of steam Hew from her 6Urboard 6ide, In the direction of the Illinois shore. It was evident to the hundreds on shore, whose attention was attracted by the explosion, that n serious accident had recurred, and the next moment two camels were seen floundering in the river, iu the wake of the boat. They were drow nod. The Hob Koy quickly gained the shore, land ing alongside the steamer Rubicon and an ex cited crowd rue lied on board. Mr. Nash, keeper of the camels and elephants, was precipitated into the river, landing betweeu the two camels. He was taken out by a bridge boat. His head is pretty badly cut and ho is bruised on his person, but it is thought na bones were brokcu. Nut-h has been in the camel and ele phant keeping line for over thirty years. During his career be has been in many tight places, but the tigbteft place he ever experienced was be tween thore two camels in mid-river. . A spar was forced against a wagon or cage containing an ostrich and killed the gay bird. A passenger named Moffat, carrying his child on a plank to tho Kubicon, after the accident, fell into the river and would have been lost but for the courage and energetic action of a bystander. A deck passenger was knocked overboard, but he was rescued with slight bruises. The boat was towed down to the Keokuk wharf-boat last night, where repairs were Imoie diately commenced. MUSICAL.
