A GEEAT WORK.
Ilw Obstruction nr Brinv llemoTed from
Ihe J n airs Itiver.
The Richmond Whig gives an interesting:
account of rrofcflor Maillcfcrt's operations on
James the river. After decribln the seusallon
produced by tbe shock of an explosion under
water, which was followed by the upheaval of
broken Umbers, mud, and stone, and resulted In
the removal of two "cribs," about two hundred
J ards distant from each other, it says: "The
rurfst e of the river in every direction wai by
this lime covered with fragments of bue tim
bers, which for nearly ten years have obstructed
navigation and perpetuated the energy and
carnetlnen of our Confederate engineers.
Where there were only three feet water before,
there are now eighteen feet.. There were ori
ginally twenty cribs, placed in three rows ncross
the clianm i; of these nineteen have been re
tnoed by Professor Malllefert, and only one
remains. Viz : that on which rests the wreck of
the Confederate gunboat Northampton. This,
althouiih not in the contract, will be removed at
an raily day. These cribs are pens 18 feet by
iXi feet," ana are 28 feet deep. Their wooden
frames, which were safelv secured by strong
iron rod, were constructed ot timber 21 Inches
bylSii clie, and were filled with stone -the
tstlmate for each crib being over 400 tons. It
nallv requires four explosions to a crib, al
though je.'tcrday three were found sufficient in
one lii'-'anc c. These sullice not only to break up
the woodtfi framework but to create four crater
In the bottom of the river immediately nt tbe
angles of 4 the crib" into which the st me is
thrown by npcated shocks, thereby preventing
it from ! 1'iiilng an obstruction in the channel.
All of tbe tiouting timber and other debris is
Tftnov-(l i (be fhore, nnd such logs a are
soMx-d nvd Htjk are fl'bed up and similarly dis
posed of. In addition to ihe obstructions named,
l'rofefi Muillefert has removed from the chan
nel at Dowry's Bluff the wrecks of the CurtU
reck. t Kcl!Oonr, two barges, and one
''lighter,' i of which except, the steamer were
tilled iib Mone before b"ing sunk. The con
tiact rc'i'i'ti-d him to complete this importmt
work, wlli !i was to give us eighteen feet water
fifty
iiinctv da in. ending the 2t)th of the present
Month-. And. although the weather has been
tilt h as to occasion all sorts of delays, he will be
able to complete it as promised.
The work at Drewry's Bluff, for example, not
including the removal of the wreck "of the
Northampton, will require, it Is estimated, two
clays more; that at "(iravevard Bend" about the
eame time, and that at "Warwick's Bar" per
haps less. In this connection we are gratilled
at being at le to state by authority that the work
of enlarging the Dutch (iap Canal is now under
contract the American Dredging Company be
coming the contractors and operations will be
commenced early next month. The canal is to
be one hundred feet wide at the bottom and one
buudred and fifty feet wide at the top, with a
depth of fifteen feet.
A WOMAN'S KEVESGE.
A Jetn Wife Tatar a. Dentil? He venae

The (Savannah Jirpublican of Saturday last
has the following:
The poet has truly said ' 'II ell katU do fury
like a woman scorned," and it was very forcibly
illustrated on Thursday night, about the hour of
seven o'clock. As far as we are able to learn
tbe facta they appear to be about as follows:
About the hour mentioned a lady, named Mrs.
Slaley, railed at the house of ill-fame on the
corner t Fabra and Margaret streets, and asked
if "Sue llunsicrford," an inmate of the house,
was in. On being answered in the aflirmatlve.
sho walked in and asked if she could get board
there. The proprietress of the establishment
told her that she had evidently mistaken the
character of the house. iSue then asked to eoo
Sue Hungtrford, who appeared and went to the
door, when she was seized by two young men
who had accompanied the lady to the house,
while Mrs. Staley Inflicted eleven stabs on dif
ferent parts of Miss llungerford's person, some
of tbewverv serious and dangerous in their
character. Ihe shrieks of the woman attracted
the iumates of tbe noune, who rushed out and
found the two men holding the woman, one on
each side, and the lady inflicting tbe wounds.
Rumor glv;s parlous surmises as to the cause
of this ten ible revenge. It is, however, under
stood that the husband of the lady has had a too
close intimacy with the woman, and that,
actuated by revenge, she sought to rid the world
of one who bad thus alienated the affectloni of
her lawful spouse. The parties are quite re
spectable, aud well known in the city. Tne
matter will undergo legal investigation, when
tbe full facts will be brought out.
Some of the wounds are most frightful.
Although the attending physician says she will
recover, the sufferer says she has no hopes her
self, as she knows, from the depth of the won ails
and tbe pain she experiences, that she cannot re
cover. After the cutting took place the wounds
were drctscd, and Miss Jlungerlordthluklngbhe
would die, expressed a desire that no prosecu
tion be had in the matter, prclcrring to leave
the matter in the hands of the higher Judire.
But on learning yesterday moriiing that her life
was sought, at the eoliclu'lou of friends war
rants were Usued against the parties.
Mrs. tftalcy was held in oouds in the sum of
$ 10,000 for an assault with intent to murder,
and tliOOO on a peace b.md. Mcasri. iSuley ami
Tatem, as accessories, writ held to bail in the
8UIH of irKK) each, and '.IXW each onutiea .-o
bond. Total amount ot surely, -7,00. It was
reported yesterday alternoou that the injured
woman hid died, but information received
direct at a late hour placed her lu a very critical
position, though still living.

Nathan Anderson, convicted nd sentenced
for an attempted rape, for ten years, aud John
Bishop, awaiting trial for the same crime,
scaped from the Kent county (Del.) jail on
Tuesday evening about 7 o'clock. They had
made full preparation tor escape by picking a
hole almost through the wall, and bad their Irons
sawn in two ready to make the effort. The
sheriff's wife at this time came along and oncned
the door ot their cell to give them a bucket of
water, when the prisoners sprang to their feet
and rushed past the lady, and goiug to the door,
found the key In the lock in the inside, which
Anderson quickly turned, wheu they madethf:ir
scape. The alarm being given, Bishop was
recaptured ina creek into which he bad waded
up to bis neck in the water. A couple of shots
lrom the sheriff's revolver brought him speedily
ashore, but Anderson is yet at Urge. The
sheriff has offered 1100 for his recapture. He
tad only served out about nine months of the
ten years for which be was sentenced.

been there he has established himself firmlv In
the regards of the Philadelphia public, and he
should have, as he doubtless will, the compli

On Saturday evening Mr. Albert Roberts, the
doorkeeper, and Mr. T. A. Voorheei, the special
officer, will have a benefit, when the comedv of
Wild Oatn and the drama of Tlw Jiobbers will
be performed.
At the American a variety entertainment
will be given this evening.
To-morrow there will be a family night, when
the programme will be arranged expressly with
a view of pleasing the tastes of ladies and
family parties, and particular care will be taken
that nothing to offend the most fastidious shall
occur. There Is a large and efllcient ballet
trotipo at the American, and a great number of
performers of specialties, as Cool Burgess, the
comedian; the Leopolds, acrobats; J. H. Mil
born, the comic singer and delineator; Andy
Hughes, the champion club swinger; Charles
Howard and R. Harrison, Ethiopian delineators,
and a multitude of others, who follow each
other in rapid succession, keeping the audience
continually entertained with novelties. A va
riety performance has the advantage over a
legitimate theatrical entertainment that one can
enter or leave at any time without breaking the
thread of interest, and very many persons who
have only half an honr to spare find it pleasant
to drop In at the American and see an act or
two. The performance to-morrow evening will
conclude with the very funny pantomime of
Jack and the JJranstafc, which is Itself well
worth seeing.
On Saturday there will be a family matinee
conducted on the same plan as the Friday night
perlormance. The patronage that has been be
stowed upon the family performances given in
the New American proves that they are appre
ciated by those to whom they are specially ad
dressed, and every Friday evening and Saturday
afternoon hitheito the theatre has been filled
with ladies and children, who evidently t'iok
much delight in the efforts made for their
amusement.
At the Mi seum. Ninth and Arch streets,
there will be a dramatic performance this
evening.
At the Assembly Building the two-headed
girl and other living curiosities will be on exhi
bition this afternoon nnd evening.
Amekkts, the child violinist, will appear at
Concert Pall in a scries of concerts, to com
mence on Monday next.
