ruoET soritD.
rnn.iDii.rniA, Feb. is. Editor TaMromrn : In
atatement made before the New York Farmers'
Club a few weeks since, I told them that Ihd 5 J
varieties of flower, picked in the open a'r on
December 4, the day prior to my departure from
Olympla, which Is in latitude T.
Tola statement seemed a surprise to the club, and
there hare been manylnqalrtos since, wondering how
It could be done at so lata a da.r In the season In so
high a latitude. This morning and to-day (February
18), as you sec, the weather at Philadelphia is a re
minder of what we have on Paget Sound daring the
(rreater part of onr winters. I hare resided on the
Sound and In the vicinity for seventeen winters,
and can say that there Is not an average of four
weeks of freer.lng weather during the winter, and
that It Is never extremely cold.
Ftbrnary is onr great wheat-growing month, and
our meadows are usually green nntll December, and
often much later. Our winters are mild and wet,
and the summers comparatively dry and cool. Trie
average temperature for six consecutive months at
Fort S'ellacoom, la lat'tude 4TDT, was 40 degrees;
the summer 68 degrees; average rain fall 63 inches;
4 Inches In summer.
At a fnture date, If acceptable, I will send you a
condensed statement respecting the resources of
that great country. This morning's temperature
being so similar to that on the Sound during tne
winter, that I thought It a favorable opportunity to
answer the numerous Inquiries by comparison, that
they might realize how It came that we had flowers
in bloom not only In December but also In January.

TUB
Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston, Mass.
. GEOEGE P. SANGER, PRESIDENT. GEORGE B. AGER, SECRETARY".
ELIZUR WRIGHT, ACTUARY.
The John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company PAID at their offioe,
No. 150 South FOURTH Street, Philadelphia,
on the 17th of November, 1870, to Mrs. Richard A. Douglas, residing
Northers Coiner Sixteenth and Coatea streets, Philadelphia, the policy for FIF
TEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS on her late husband, under the follow
ing circumstances:
RICHARD A. DOUGLAS .
insured his life on May ft, 1 809, for fifteen thousand dollars, ne then paid for one
ysar. He neglected his second paipnent, whieh was due on May 3,
1870. He died on September 2, Just four months afterwards.
Now, this Company, by its charier, transacts all its business under
Ihe non-feiture plan; consequently Mr. Douglas' policy ivas in'rvLh
Jorce at his death. From the $1.1,Ouo was deducted merely the amount which be
i hould have paid on May S, with lawful interest added.
NOW OU8EHVU TUB CONTRAST X
Mr. Douglas had fifteen thousand dollars additional insurance in other so
called non-forfcitiDg companies, and, as icith it s, had neglected his pay
ments. These policies became forfeited and or no value because
the payments ivere not made on the day when duel His
policy in The John Hancock Mutual would not have expired
until July A, 1871.
"We desire to make the advantages of the John Hancock so clear that any one
contemplating in sruance upon his life will avail himself of them. The
wisest man has little knowledge of the changes which await him. He who feels
the least need to-day of the non-forfeiture provision may be the most aided by it
at some future time. It imposesjno extra cost. Therefore, what can
justify your neglect of it? In addition to this provision in our charter our condi
tions are liberal, rates low, plans popular, and responsibility undoubted. A care
fnl investigation will convince an unbiased judgment that there is nothing
desirable in life insiwance which may not be secured in the JOIZtw
ITAWCOCII.
