by tho strike, an J several tu'iiaees hive busu
compelled to suspend operations. Several m re
wilt speedily follow if aid ts not Immediately

There have been Rome t"V "i i ir-i th f. the
members of the W. B. A. have rc.tcjiA. I ; itiir
raBb octlon In refusing to let work in the mine
proceed sufficiently to supply the funi icjs, ail
another older is no.v talked of allovvinir a pir
tiul resumption, but for the purpose of msUiuix
the Iron u.eu oulv. It Is said that this order,
fixing tbe time when the men miy regime work
for that purpose, U to be given to-d ly by the
iupteme beud of tho W. H. A., who-u or Jars
Wbeiber reasonable or otherwise, it Is dangerou-i
to rilobcy. The date, It is supposed, will ba the
15th Inst.
If work U not allowed, the effect on both the
lrou nnd coal trades will be much nvro unp'ei
ant than 1 expected by the uitjjri'j. Tin
t fleet of Mopping the furcaces will bu to m '
the price of domestic iron higher than tli it of
iniporieri. even with tiie duty added. Iui;iorte I
Iron will then be ued exteii-lvely, mil our
niaiiufaetirers will have no deui ind, and co'ise
qucntly the furnaces cannot bo started even
when It is otherwise possible. Too eutiro stop
page of the furnaces will greatly afliiet thu de
mand for conl, and thus the co.il iutorests will
alio be mnde to suffer.
In this cotmection It nny bo well to mention
that there are aleo rumors current rel-iti veto a
coiiibinulion of the iron uiaiiufacturers.tlie c.irry
ing companies and the coal operators, in cue ot a
longer refusal to work by theiiiiuer-i.for the pur
pose of breaking dovn entirely thu worknig
lueu'ri organization. This, it is siid, cai be d ne
by a refusal for a f-hort time by the o;n;r it rs t
hoi k the mines, by the carrying companies t-
transport coal, and by the lrou men to continue
work. It is said that the lrou men are reaiy t'i
Mop at any moment, on account of the uuiaiii
factory condition of tho trade, tint
the operators can make more m niey by
being idle, nnd that the carrying conpmle-t
think it to their inteiests to aid the movement.
"While such a thing is very improvable, the en i
would be very desirable. Jf the movement
could be inaugurated in the manner dneri'ia I
the end would certainly bo attained. The men
are iruch dissatisfied with the administration of
their trade union, and it would take but a very
little healtbtul starving out to termi
nate its existence. The union is a nui
sance at tbe best of times. but
taken altogether. If it were managed with mo
deration, it would probably be preferable to the
other evils, and would certaluly be to the i ute
res' s of Us me in tiers. Hit its minigemaut h is
been for some time, and no la, bo extremely
bad. showing the greatest of wilful blunder,
short-stehtediiess, and selfl-diness on the part of
tbe lenders, that it certainly benefits noVulv
not even Its own members, and lis speedy dissolu
tion would be considered the greatest of bless
ings. Various efforts have beau m ide during
the wet k to obtain a general resumption, and
several reports state that terms have been
agreed upon in various regions. Iu l.ouigh
it is said that the men will re
sume on last year's basis, which can
be mnre easi'y paid ther?. In Wyoming the
men s ill bold to their otTer of 1 per diamond
car, or a Teducilon of thirty per ceut. TnU is
LiH little higher than the greater reduction
offeicd by tie company, which produced the
strike. Ibe men will not go any lower, and the
company, after sticking at the small difference
for a long time pro'iably for the purpose of
upholding its dignity will now most likely re
sume on the offer of the men. In Shafnokln the
men are willing to go to work at tho $3 b isis,
with 12 20 as the lowest stopping point. A
meeting will te held in Schuylkill to-day to
take some definite action.
The meeting of operators in this city last week
did nothing of more importance ttian4lo appoint
a committee to attend a similar meeting iu Ne
York held this week. The New York meeting
does not as yet appear to have done anything
better, it being held for conference only.
Tbe Chinese question again agitates the
Schuylkill miners, one operator being reported
to hate fDgngcd coolies to work the coming
feast d, sa d coolies now being on tho way
thither. The report is very dubious. It is not
a bad move, however, but should It be curried
out there will be work for the newly orgauizod
State militia.
The following U the complete summary of the
trade for the past week, as reported for the
