Mr. Itafua A da ma nn ,lr Prlrr Tealo.
f hi rld in'a brilliant comedy of Tlx School for
traiittal was performed last nlkrht at the Arch
for the purpose of Introducing Mr. Rufus Adams
in the character of "Sir Peter Tcaxle." Mr.
Adam has a hiirh reputation as a teacher of
elocution, and he Is probably a gwd a judge of
acting as there Is In tho country. There is a
vast difference, however, between knowing hosr
a thing ought to be done and how to do it. If
the sltuatioa were otherwise, what migolflcent
actors all the critics would be! and Mr. Adam,
by his "Sir Peter Teazle," even more than
bv bis 'Shylock," demonstrated Tery
clearly that be has not mastered all the techni
calities of the art histrionic. Elocution
Is a very Important element of the art
of acting, but it is not the only
clement worihyof attention, hyany means; and
on the stage a man who has plenty of the right
kli,d of a' tion slthough he may bo an exe
crable reader, will succeed where oue who
in merely a good elocutionist will make
but little Impression. "Sir Peter Teazle" is a
character that will almost act Itself In
reasonably competent hands, and it re
quins a fine physiqne een more than eminent
ability. Mr. Adams certainly looked the part
last night, as bo possesses all the personal ad
vantages necessary for Hs successful persona
tion, but he lacked sympathy with it, and his
performance was cold a id colorless, although
correct enough as a piece of reading. Mr.
Adams' deficiencies were especially apparent la
the quarrel scene, where Mrs. Drew's brilliant
acting as "Lady Teazle" completely threw him
in the shade. Mr. Adams l.i not a mere amateur,
atrd jet he is not strictly a professional. Ili
performance, therefore, is open to criticism,
while it Is entitled to a certain amount of
lenient judgment. Some of his greatest defi
ciencies last evening may be attributed to want
of practice as a profeaslonal actor, which pre
sented Mm from feeling perfectly at ease on
the stae.
"The nnrtchbark" nt the I'hxannt.
There ore few plays better worth seeing than
The. Ihmehhark, and the audience in attendance
at (lie Cbesuut Street Theatre last evening had
the pleasure of witnessing a tnore than usually
good representation of it. The "Julia" of Miss
(Jlovr rwas a very charming performance, and
it made a more favorable impression than any
thing she has yet done iu this city. Miss Glorer
has a slight Impediment in her speech that Is
not'iiiipleasaut in Itself, but that preveuts her
from being heard distinctly at all times, aud
she is to a certain extent deficient in power.
Those Lo tit nearest to the stage, therefore,
ere best ublo to appreciate tome of tl e best
psrts of her acting, and to understand
how rcaliy fine her abilities arc.
Miss Cover is a')Je to represent passion
and emotion without rant, and in this she pre
sents a most favorable contrast to Mrs. Scott
Siddons, who last played the part of "Julia" at
the Chesnut. What she licks In force she
makes up In expression, nd her performance
last evening was refined, elegant, and tho
roughly artistic such a prforftiaric, In fact, as I
few stock actresses we have had In this city of
late years could equal. Mr. Davenport's "Master
Walter" wjs at course admirable iu every re
spect, and the other parts were, almost without
exception, well sustained. The house was filled
vitli a large and fashionable audience, and the
performance was liberally applaur'ed through
out, Miss Glover, Mr. Davenport, and Mr.
Thome, who personated "Clifford," being ee?e
ral times tailed before tlmc VH.rj.
