At the quarterly meeting of the Pennsyl
vania Baptist General Association, held yes
terday afternoon, tho Secretary's report was
read, showing 'the following: The receipts
for the quarter were ! 48(H), $800 of which
only goes into this quartern account. The
accounts for the last year were closed with
only a balance of f .V.V'Jl against the Associa-
tion. The reports received from the twenty
seven missionaries phow that they have
preached during tho quarter 1017 sermons,
attended MS other meetings, baptized "2
persons, made 1)G8 pastoral visits, travelled
7274 miles, and supplied thirty-seven churches
and twenty-three out-stations.
At tho annual meeting of the stockhold
ers of Horticultural Hall, held last evening, a
resolution was adopted tendering tho use of
the hall, at a moderate rent, to the Franklin
Institute for the purpose of holding an exhi
bition of arts and manufactures in September
next. An election for directors to serve the
ensuing year resulted in the choioo of the following-named:
William L. Schaffer, J. K.
Mitchell, Janies Kitchie, IT. A. Dreer, Edwin
Satterthwaite, Thomas Evans, Charles P.
Ilares, Kobert Cornelius, William Ilackor,
and Stephen l lanagan.
A meeting was held last evening at tho
office of the Clerks of Councils of the Com
mittee, on Fire Department of Solect and
Common Councils for the purpose of organi
zation, Nicholas Shane, of tho Nineteenth
ward, in tho chair.
After some discussion as to tho right of the
Fire Commissioners to act without consulta
tion with the committee, Mr. Loudenslager,
President of the commissioners, explained
that they Lad no placo of meeting, hence
the action relative to the reconstruction of
the office of Chief Engineer.
Mr. riumly Btated that the commission had
done nothing that they had not a perfect
light to do under the ordinance.
Mr. Marcus moved that the moaning of
pec tion 5 of the fire bill is understood to be
that the Fire Commissioners cannot create
bills without the consent of the Committee
on Fire Department of Councils.
After some discussion the motion was with
drawn. A motion prevailed for the appointment of
a committees of three from the Fire Commit
tee of Councils, in connection with a similar
committee of Fire Commissioners, for the
purpose of fitting up the Chief Engineer's
room, Fifth and Chesnut streets.
At a special meeting of Common Council
held yesterday, a committee was appointed to
try the right of William II. Wrhite to a seat
in Common Council from the Sixteenth ward.
Mr. Henry Eisenbrown (Democrat) is the
contestant in the case. Tho committee meets
this afternoon at i o'clock.
' Professor James McCosb, LL. D., of
Princeton College, lwt evening delivered a
lecture in Concert Hall upon Kenan's Life of
Jesus. The address was critical in its bear
ing, the eminent gentleman proceeding on
the ground that if one part of Kenan's Life
be true, then the peculiar conclusions drawn
by him are not authorized. M. Kenan has
taken the liberty to select what he considers
true, and reject what he considers untrue, a
very dangerous dootrine, tending to over
throw all historic investigation. The Bible
will bear thorough investigation, and when
that is performed tho same careful steps
must be followed as in other historic ques
tions. The account of the doings and say
ings of our Saviour is just as capable of proof
as the existence of Julius Casar.
Domestic Affair.
The Virginia Legislature is again discuss
ing the arbitration of West Virginia's share of
the State debt.
The Kansas Legislature met yesterday,
and much excitement exists on tho Senatorial
contest in that State.
The Sherman House of Boston took fire
on Monday evening, and, though little dam
age ensued, much excitement occurred.
On Monday night the through train from
New York for Washington, which left Balti
more at alf-past 8, was boarded by robbers,
who rifled the baggago car.
The Korean Catholic Church of St. John
the Evangelist, located on Fiftieth street,
near Fourth avenue, New York city, was
totally destroyed by fire last evening.
The reception given by Mrs. Grant yes
terday afternoon is reported as being one of
the most brilliant affairs of the kind that
ever took place at the Executive Mansion.-
The Legislature of New Jersey effected
its organization yesterday at Trenton, and
from its present complexion the election of
ex-Senator Frelinghuysen to the United States
Senate is thought probable.
The Kepnblican members of the Legis
lature held their caucus last night for State
Treasurer, and upon the first ballot the re
sult was as follows: Mackey, f2; Coleman,
8; Hough, 8; and Taggart, 1. The nomina
tion of Mr. Mackey was made unanimous.
' -Just prior to its adjournment yesterday,
the House of Representatives passed the bill
reported ly Mr. Morrell, of Pennsylvania, to
provide for the celebration of the one hun
dredth anniversary of American indepen
dence by holding an international exhibition
of arts and manufactures in this city en July
4, 187C.
The Legislature reassembled yesterday at
Ilarrisburg, and after the Speaker of the
Senate announced the standing committees
for the session, he expressed his dotermina
. tion not to entertain certain classes
of bills, which, of right, do not
belong to the jurisdiction of the Legisla
ture, but to the several courts of the State.
In both houses parties were put in nomina
tion for the State Treasurership, and the
question as to where Kothermel's painting of
the Battle of Gettysburg shall be ultimately
deposited was discussed at great length.
Foreign Attain.
The Prussians have raised the biege of
Langres.
Heavy reinforcements have recently ar
rived. in France from Germany.
Writs for the election of members of
the German Parliament will be issued during
the present month.
A report comes from London that the
financial status of France is worse than her
military situation.
On Monday night an immense meeting
was held at Greenwich, England, to demand
the resignation of Gladstone.
The Prussians claim to have increased
the fire of their batteries before Paris, and
that the return fire of the French is weak.
A despatch from Berlin announces that
the second instalment of the German loan
has been taken by contractors at an advanoe.
In the engagement before Yendoaie, on
Friday, the French claim a great victory
with trifling toss, while they assert that their
foes suffered severely.
Colonel Pratt, direetor of the Anglo
Ambulance Corps, has gone to

Hoard mf Eilurwtlon.
The stated meeting of the Hoard of Eluca
lion was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. M.
Hall Stanton in the chair.
A communication was read from Messrs. A.
B.(Justice A Co., stating that in two instances
the rates at which they offered supplies were
lower than those accepted. They claim to
have been the lowest bidder for "soapstone
pencils," which they offered for $1-25 per
1000, while tho award for the same article
was $4T)0. They ask a reconsideration of tho
case, and say they think the board ia bound
to purchase supplies at the lowest rates. Re
ferred to the Committee on Supplies.
Mr. Steinmetz presented a communication
from Messrs. Eldredge tv Brother, stating that
the action of the Board of Education, at its
meeting in December, has been so repre
sented as seriously to interfere with their
business relationships and damage their busi
ness interests. Judging (from the tenor of
the remarks of Mr. Steinmetz at the last
meeting, the firm say they did not bolieve
that either he or the board anticipated such a
result, and they ask that such a resolution bo
offered as will locate its position in tho pre
mises and place the action fairly before the
comiT.uiiity.
Mr. Steinmetz oCered a resolution declar
