THE COIL TRADE.
An Order tram the Delaware, Lackawanna
and Wralern Knllrad Company The Com
plete Tona.ae for the Week Quotations,
Ktc.
The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad
Company issued the following circular December 10,
1870:
"Notice is hereby given that In consequence of a
strike among; the miners and other employes en
gaged at the collieries from which, tils C tmpany
obtain their coal, the Company do not expect U ba
able to deliver any more of the coal sold at their
auction sale on the Ruth day ot Navembur, 1370. an1
no further deliveries will be made on account of auc
tion sales previously made.
"The fifty cenj per ton deposited by parties not
bow Indebted to the company will be refunded upon
application to the treasurer at this office.
Deposits paid by parties who are Indebted for
coal already shipped will be credited to them oa
ihclr respective accounM."
The Scranton men stUl hold out, as there Is every
reason to suppose they will for some time to coma.
Their position Is somewhat dlirereut from that of
the Schuylkill men during the past summer. The
latter were the strong upholders of the W. B. A.,
and In striking desired that all other men ttirougu
out all the coul regions should suspend also for the
benefit of those lu Schuylkill, whether It was to the
advantage or the rest or not. Their dema'.nU In
many particulars were maulfestly unjust, and public
sentiment was against them in the majority of
cases.
. The Scranton men take a different stand, and
are consequently regarded In a different light.
They aid not belong to the orgaiiiztttiou whose un
just measures were the subj ct of general complaint.
They struck because their wages were atiddeuiy re
du ed to a very low flpure, considering what tliev
had been receiving. Whei they struck they were
perfectly independent, and did not ak that the
other regions should stride also In order to bnnedt
them. Th ugh the strike itself Is Dot Justifiable,
when viewed In the light of the legitimate laws
which should govern all departments or trale. yet
It was not to be wonderel at, when It is'couslderel
In what manner the trade is now m mazed. A sira-
fiie strike in the Schuylkill regions womd have been
ookedupou in the same manuer. It was the un
just demands and the poor arrangement of the
W. B. A. by its officers which-' provoked sj
Binch cenure. And, besides, the difference In wages
which provoked the Schuylkill strike was not near
so great as that put npou the Scranton men. Though
they may have been receiving more than a letfiUui-t ,u
rate for their work, they were soraewnat Justified la
resisting the decline because they hud beo.i receiv
ing it lor some time, mid had regarded it as their
legitimate income. When a person receive a c-r-tttlu
higher salary for a certain length of tlm his
expenses to some extent increase, and cauuot be
brought back to the former standard without some
sacridces. When the reduction Is great the sacri
fice is equal, and consequently there is more re
sistance. When we take into account also the fat that tha
ftranton men were resisting what appeared to be the
' unfair proceedings of a great monopolv company,
we bave an additional reason why the Horaitton
strike Is cot regarded In the same light as that of
Schuylkill.
But, no matter how it may be regarded, the
method of striking as a remeoy for all wrouics Is
greatly to be deprecated, and it Is now prettv gene
rally conceded by all that another arrangement
would be for the better Interest of everybody. Its
advent will be gladly welcomed, and from present
appearances it Is not so very far from belug brought
Into operation.
The following is the coraolete Summary of th
trade for the past week, as reported for the Potts
