General Cumside, who came to Geneva to
fee bis wife, who has been in this city some
weeks, left last Monday for Brussels. Of
com rc, lio was "interviewed" by people who
warded bis signaturo to various South Sea
set ernes, or w ished to egg the General on to
talking about the ins and outs of Paris.
He got a chance, however, to take
Lis wife to the Greek Church. Cy
the way, last Wednesday an American lady,
Miss Monroe, of Syracuse, N. Y., was married
at tLis little church to a Russian gentleman. I
will not wrong Lim to the extent of trying my
tkill on Lis nutne. Tho ceremony, to the dis
appointment of Americans, was not public,
OLd only Mrs. lveKsellaer 1 a d, of Albany,
was invited to witness the performance,
which is quite in the nature of a sacrament.
There is much that is picturesque about the
pageant; what w ith the blue velvet and silver-
aced robe of the priest, the holding of the
heavy silver crowns over the beads of the
happy pair for the priest takes the united
Lands of the two in his and marches with them
slowly three times around his altar; all the
while the groomsmen follow, holding
the f-ilver crowns over the heads of the bride
and bridegroom. These crowns are so heavy
that borne of the assistants frequently come
to the aid of the groomsmen, l'raying and
chanting are liberally mingled with the per
formence, and three times they take the
sacrament. The bride and bridegroom have
a piece of rose-colored satin to stand upon,
and there i3 a vulgar belief that the one who
treads liist upon the satin will hold the upper
hand in the household. Upon this occasion.
I em told, the bridegroom gracef ally placed
the beautiful bride first upon the pink rag.
