Marshal Gregory placed the population of Philadelphia at 657,159; but iu the returns of the entire Eastern District of the Stato, as published by us a few days ao, the population of the city was placed by the Marshal at 057,520, showing an Increase since 1800 of 91,9',7, or 10 27 per cent. The largo iucrease shown by Pittsburg during the last decade is in some measure owing to the annexation of adjacent boroughs. The popula tion of the south side boroughs, 40,815, added to that of Pittsburg and Allegheny City, gives a total of 186,254, which is, practically, the popn-. lation of this g-reat centre of industry. If the whole neighborhood were consolidated Into one municipality, It would rank as the tenth In point of popnlation in the United States. The entire population of Allegheny couuty is 203,,38'i against VW.7S1 an increase iu ten years of W,G58, or 40 85 per cent. Scranton, which has become the fifth city in the State In population, exhibits the remarkable increase ot 2VS S1 per cent, since 1800, a pro gress altogether unprecedented In the eastern section of Hie couutry during late years, and probably not excelled in any portion of the Union during the past decade. The name of the ity does not even appear in the census returns of 1850. Harrisbun;, the capital, exhibits the. larcje iu erease of Ti '-'.i per cent, during the decado. Iu 1840 its population was but 5030. The following are the i-lai(iud returns for 1870 and 1800, in comparison: 1870. 1800. AND lilt Jl A.T1C. Uilwis Baath aa "rthylaek." Mr. Booth's personation of "Shylock" is based npon a clear, intelligent, and highly artistic coneeption of the character. It exhibits a man of not igneble nature nor ungenerous instincts, but embittered and excited to ferocity by the insults that hare been heaped upon his race and himself as a representative of that race. The character is consistently presented by Mr. Booth, and the strong points are brought out with remarkable skill. ''ShylockV burst of grief and rage when he learns of the flight of "Jessica" is rery finely expressed, and is pro perly made to appear as adding an intensity to his obstinate iasistance upon the letter of his bond. In the trial scene Mr. Booth's actlig makes the situation in tensely real even to old playgoers and atudenU of Shakespeare who almost know the text by heart, and he manages, notwithstanding the bloodthimlness and ferocity of the old Jew, to retain for him a measure of the sympathy of the spectators, Jwho, although they may be gratified at his defeat, cannot but sympathize with him in hi terrible abasement. Mr. Booth has studied every detail of this performance and has reduced it so to a system that it to some ex tent lacks spontaneity. Some of bis points, as the gesture of despair made by throwing his arms over his head as he creeps from the court-room after the trial, are exceedingly line, but lose something in force from being too obviously studied. Ta CUT AaauaCBieaia. At thk Walnut Mr. Edwin Booth will per sonate "Kiehelteu" this evening. At tub Akcu the drama of Across the Conti- nent will be reueated this eveuini;.
