otherwise "the Ferret." It is impossible after
but a single hearing to giro an adequate ac
count of this remarkable performance. The
aathor has expended his Ingenuity in cramming
the greatest possible number of horrors into
the smllest possible space, and it Is a aufflclcnt
characterisation of the piece to say that Ills
like all the other sensational dramas that have
been produced daring thepast decade, only that
it is a little more so. In fact, it is an old play
that had considerable popularity at the Bowery
Theatre some years ago, with as uracil addi
tional spice thrown in as it can well crry. The
audioace Is treated to a case of delirium tremens
in the first act, and this is followed by an
amount of blsek-hearted villainy and fiendish
machination ascalnet virtue and Innocence foar
fal to contemplate, and an appropriate finale is
furnished by a battle with the Pieman Indians,
just at the critical point of which aid arrives per
Taclflc RUlrond, the train making the good but
not extraordiuary time of twelve miles in
eleven minutes. Mr. Oliver Powd Byron is not
an actor of very exalted genius, but he fully
understands the kind of work he has cut out
for himself, and his "Joe Ferris" is lively and
dashing, and in the style that the galleries de
light in. There are a good many persons who
have a tasto for such pieces as Acroa Hie Conti
nent, and who are not able to appreciate any
thing bettor; aud there Is no good reason
why they suouM not be gratified. It is a serious
question, however, for the dramatists of the
future to consider whether they will bo equal to
the demands upon them. Only a certain amount
of gore can ponibly be shed during lour or five
acta, and when the limit is reached, what are the
play-manufacturers to do for the satisfaction of
the insatiable appetites of their patrous ? There
will come a time when the public will weary of
the sensations of Across (he Continent, and we
take a certain amount of fiendish delight in ask
ing the "young American actor," Oiiver Dowd
Byron, what he will do then for a fresh sen
sation ?

In bis series of critical reminiscences of the
elder Booth, in the volume entitled "The Trage
dian," Mr. Thomas It. Gould says with regard
to his "Iatfo" that it varied less than any of his
other personations, and the difference of one
performance from another was in intensity
rathor than any other quality. This is true also
with regard to the "Iago" of Mr. Edwin Booth,
lie played the part last night with perhaps less
intensity than he sometimes does, but essen
tially the performance was the same as it was
ten years ago, and Mr. Booth's "Iago" is now,
as it was then, his most perfect per
sonation. Mr. Booth has improved
In this, as in his other roles, but if the
improvement has not been great, it is because
there has not been room for it. Mr. Booth fits
into this part as be does into no other la his re
pertoire, and while his peculiar mannerisms
are more prominent than they are in any except
his comedy performances, he nevertheless iden
tifies himself with "Iago" in such.a manner as
to produce a highly finished and most impres
sive work of art. Mr. Booth's "Iago" is a
splendid animal, soulless, malignant, but
inspired by au intelligence that amounts
almost to genius; and an opcn-souled nature,
like that ot "Othello," has as little hope of
escape from the snares set to entangle him as
he has of comprehending the motives that in
spired them.
