At THB ACADBMT OT Ml'HIC ft, nOVCltT is
Announced for this evening In the shape of Brit
tow's opera of Hip Van Winkle. This work
was otlcinally produced soma fifteen years ao,
but as English opera was not the fashion then It
failed to achieve a permanent success, and it
laid npon the shelf until it was brought out a
few weeks ago in New York. The opera is said
to contain much beautiful music, aod It ought
to attract a large audience this evening on that
account as well as because it is the work of aa
American composer, and la upon a purely
American subject. Mr. Drayton will personate
"Kip Van Winkle," and the other characters
will be sustained by Messrs. Castle, Chatlerson,
Howell, Kluross, White, Hill, Mrs. Bernard, and
Mrs. Drayton.

has been engaged, also tho "infant wonder,"
Master Charley. Among tho other attractions
-announced Is a burlesque entitled Grant' $ OjRce
Seekers, which ought to be both instructive and
entertaining. The troupe at thin establishment
Is an unusually stroug oue bitu. in vocalists,

formances present great attractions for amuse
ment seekers.
At tub American the last week of tho en

the Iron Jaw." M'llo Angela, "The Female Sam
son," and Zephyr, "The Child Wonder," is

Sionoh Bi.it aud his sou will perform a
number of interesting and curious feats iu natu
ral magic this evening at the Assembly Build

will bo gratified to learn, will shortly return to
this city, and will appear in a concert at the
Academy of Music on November 150. On De
cember 1 Handel's oratorio ot The Messiah will
be given, with Mad'lle Nilsson, M'mo Sophia
Mozart, Mifs Cary, Mr. G. Simpson, and Mr. W.
Whitney in the leading roles, and the choruses
by the Handel and Ifaydn Soeletv, under the
direction of Professor Engelke. There will also
be a grand orchestra under the direction of
Messrs. Muretzck and Kngelke.
On Saturday, December 3. a tnntluce will be
given, whic h "will be Mad'lle Nilssun's last ap
pearance in this city,
a Tub Hahkinh Conc ert. Thia entertainment
to-morrow night at Concert Hall promises to be
unusually attractive and brilliant, tickets for
almost evcrv seat in the house having been
already disposed of. Carl Wolfsoun will play
entire tho best and last work of tho illustrious
GotUehalk, entitled "Morte," and Madame
Mozart, Jennie Kempton, George Simpson, and
Mr. llarkifs himself will each and all distin
guish themselves in selections at once attractive
and elegant, including maay of the classic and
operatic gnus of the day, which will give the
audience much enjoyment and pleasure. We
do not remember to have yet seen a mora
attractive programme, and the concert will,
from all appearances, be one of the most bril
liant musical achievements of the present sea
son. Philadelphia invariably shows us appre
ciation of entertainments of this kind, and
hence the extensive demand for tickets within
the last few days. There are only a few re
maining at tho ticket otllco of Gould A Fischer,
Mo. y:.:t Cheauut street, and those who would
not miss this elegant musical treat should lose
iiO time in n un log them.
CUT ITKTIM.
A Laxuitr ok the Pekiop. Regarded from the
economic standpoint, Sea Moss Fap.in'k appears to
overshadow every other vegetable nutrient. It con
tains as we arc informed on good scientific autho
ritynearly ninety per cent, of nourishing, fattening
gelatine ; and of all gelatine substances used in cook
ing it is said to be the cheapest by over fifty per
tent., as wel' as the most digestible. We give theso
statements, which are authenticated by the signa
tures of men of eminent reputation, as vouchers for
'the opinions we have ventured to express on the
economic importance of the new article of diet. As
to its deliclousness, the "proof of the pudding is in
eating It ;" and we leel confident tost no manor
woman who hus once eaten of a blanc munge, pud
ding, custard, cream, Charlotte Russe, or any other
delicacy prepared with this marine Godsend, will
deny its claim to rank among the table luxuries of
the period.
A Younh Win s Request Wife Charley, I wish
when you tome up to-night you'd slop into your
druggist's aud get me a bottle of Plantation Bit
ters. Be Mire and get the genuine.
Charley What in the world, Mary, ore you going
to do with Plantation Bitters ?
Wife Everybody that I know is in ecstacy over
Plantation Bitters, and I am going to try them my-
elf. I am assured by several of my friends that the
Bitters will cure my dyspepsia, and at the same time
loway with that terrible nausea which you know
I am at times subject to. The doctor was la yester
day, and says that all I want is a tonic, and that
Plantation Bitters Is the bes. that can be got.
Charley-It is just the tning. my dear ; and It is
strange. that 1 had not thought of it before.
