THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1870. "IX'SICAL. AltP DRAMATIC. Jnnnasehek as MI,dy OTachfrtb." Janaaschek gave such a personation of , "Lady Macbeth" last evening at the Chcstint as was only poa1ble to a great artist. - The reading or Shake speare's texu. something very different from the mere mastery of the pronunciation or the language Was, considering all the circumstances of the cose, remarkably good, and In many of the finest passages She brought ont the latent poetry of the words In a manner that would hare done her credit If she had been a student of Shakespeare In the original all her life. It is as an actress, however, rather than as a reader that Jananschek appeals now to the conside ration of her auditors, and to place the lowest pos sible estimate upon her "Lady Macbeth," It Is such a performance of the part as has not been seen npon the American stage since Miss Oushman left It. She has essentially the tight conception of the character, and In the first part of the tragedy she Is the bold, determined, bnt not cold-blooded woman with whom ambition and love for her husband are synonymous terms. She is more resolute In stifling ber natural feelings, and more remorseless than ."Macbeth" in the commission of the crime that will Win her the prize she seeks; but the cilme once committed, remorse eats her heart away, and ber distrait manner In the scene previous to the banquet and at the banquet, when she can scarcely shake off her lethargy sufficiently to come to the support or tier husband as he stands appalled at the ghost of ,'Banquo," are the premonitions of the fearful reve lations of the sleep-walking scene. Janaua Chek's "Lady ; Macbeth" is grandly outlined, bnt It lacks some of the . finer details that we look for, and that we are sure the actress will supply when she has become accustomed to performing the part In English. The greatest de ficiency noticeable last evening was a want of Id ton Blty, more of voice than manr.er, especially in the murder scene, and the actress made a mistake, we think, In not returning to the stage after the dis covery of the murder.where an opportunity is offered for a great point, for the reaction that occurs in "Lady Macbeth" is distinctly marked in the text of the play at this point. The sleep-walking scene was picturesque and Impressive In the extreme. Our limited space to-day will noi permit us to make a de tailed criticism of this performance, and we can only Indicate briefly Its chief characteristics, and advise onr readers to attend this evening and judge for themselves. Janauschek played last even ing to the largest audience she has yet had, which was a gratifying indication that the play-goers of this city are beginning to discover her merits. That her season has not been as successful as It deserved to be Is attrtbutadle mainly to bad management. On her arrival here on Monday she found that the performance for the evening had not been an nounced, and that in many or the papers there were no advertisements or any kind, while the posters for the streets hid not been put out until the last minute, and then withont any deflnite statements of the performances for each evening. Such manage ment as this for an artist who was trying a difficult and precarious experiment was culpablo In the highest degree, and Mad'lle Janauschek will not do herself justice unless she procures the aid of a reasonably competent per son to attend to her business matters for her. In Bplte of the discouragements to which she has been subjected, she has during the present week de monstrated in the most satisfactory manner her capabilities as an English-speaking actress, and we hope to see her soon again with an Increased reper toire which will Include "Cleopatra," "Queen Katha rine," and other or the greatest English traglo roles A wor:l or commendation Is due to Mr. Frederick Robinson for what was, on the whole, a very credit able performance of the part ef "JIacbeth" last evening, mis is one or tne most aimcuit or stiake snearlan characters to represent passably well, and Mr. Robinson, although his "Macbeth" was not above criticism, reany deserves praise lor a piece or acting t hat was much above the average In merit. The City Amusements. At the Uhkhnct there will be a matinee to-day, wnen jnairiie janauscncK win appear as me "ie- uumutvi IU M 1 V-U VJ U II ( ly V I1V.I uj aili. au gustln Daly, entitled Come Here. The performance will conclude with The Bactolor of Artn. This evening Mad'lle Janauschek will repeat her penormance 01 "iiB(iy iviacDein."
