'M. r."l the Areh.
The Drst performance of M. P., the new comely
by the author of Our, cte, ScWLatid other pieces
that nave obtained popularity, attracted a good
Audience to the Arch last evening. M. P. signifies
Member of Parliament, and the main Incidents are
connected with the Intrigues for the election of
rival candidates, one of whom Is the highly honora
blo bat excessively Inane fashionable British gen
tleman, or rather "swell," of the period, and the
Other the conventional "self-made man," with a
dash of real character In him, for which,
bewever, we be'teve that Mr. Craig, who sustained
the part last evening, is entitled to more credit than
the author. The subject Is one that requires for its
most effective delineation a more vigorous pen than
that commonly wielded by Mr. Robertson, and while
there is better writing In M. P. than In anything that
Bonclcault has lately doae, it is not as strong a piece
ft Bonclcault would have turned out If he had
undertaken to manipulate the same theme. The
chief characteristic or Robertson s plays are a
neatly managed plot, neatly arranged situations,
and a neat dialogue that is often animated and
really witty, and not seldom vapid and wearisome In
th9 extreme. All of these characteristics we Dnd in
M. P., the opening of which introduces tons some
of the more red tied male personages, whose
drawling conversation has anything but an enliven
ing effect. The appearance of some of the
ladles and some of the more vulgar
male personages npon the scene brightens
OP .the performance, and by the time
the curtain drops npon the first net the audience is
Impressed with the Idea that there may be really
Borne good entertainment in the piece. Mr. Mackay
and Mr. Hill act the parts of "Dunscombe Duns
combe, Esq." and "Piers Talbot" with nice discrimi
nation, but It would really be an improvement if they
would drop the peculiar drawl which, although
Characteristic of the style of personages they repre
sent, Is insufferably wearisome.
The staple of the plot relates to the intrigues and
bribery Incident to a British election, and here the
dramatic talent f the author Is shown to the best
advantage, as It Is in the love stories that are intro
duced as accessories to the main theme. Much of
the dialogue is exceedingly well written, and in
Borne of the scenes there is a genuine humor such as
Is not often seen in the play-writing of the present
day. All the parts last evening were well sustained,
but Mr. Craig rather carried off the honors with his
Very amusing personation of the "self-made man"
"Isaac Skoome," unless, Indeed, Mrs. Drew is enti
tled to share them with him for her vivacious and
humorous acting of the part of "Cecelia Dunscombe."
"Urnanl" at tbe Chesnut.
We are happy in the belief that the blonde bur
lesque business is literally on Its last legs, for while
the travesty of Ernani, which was produced at the
Chesnut last evening by the Lisa Weber troupe, is
no worse than some burlesques we have been called
upon to witness since the Invasion of the blondes,
the audience found it very hard to extract much
amusement from it, and the well-worn jokes and
ttotiblesenteiutres that a few seasons ago would
eet a theatre in a roar fell very flat indeed. It is
possible that an intelligent public, anxious to enjoy
a novel sensation, may, for a time, find entertain
ment in such pcrfonnances as the blonde burlcsquers
afford, but it Is not in human nature to
endure more than a certain amount of utterly
idiotic attempts at fun, Indecent allusions, and ex
hibitions of the female figure. Miss Lisa Weber in
her performance last night gave her audience most
Of the old Lydla Thompson business that disgusted
decent people in this city last season, and It is a
gratifying indication of an Improved taste in our
theatre-goers that it failed to excite much enthusi
asm ; and it will be a matter for sincere gratifica
tion if such performances can in future be ban
ished to concert halls and variety theatres, where
they belong, and leave the legitimate boaras to the
class of entertainments that the more judicious por
tion of the public desire to see upon them.
ftlr. J. 8. Clnrfce am "Henry Dove."
Mr. J. 6. Clarke commenced the second week of
bis engagement at the Walnut last evening to a
fiouso crowded in every corner with an' audience
bent upoa enjoying a couple of honrs of hearty
laughter. Buckstone's farcical play of Married Life
Is an abundantly amusing piece of Itself, bat Mr.
Clarke gave It an additional attraction by his very
funny personation of "Henry Dove." Mr. Clarke is
a genuine farce actor, and in such a charac
ter as "Henry Dove" he has excellent
opportunities to give his peculiar talents full
play. His performance last evening was in an emi
nent degree mlrth-inBnlring, and was highly enjoyed
by all who witnessed it.
The Cltr Amnaeinenia
At tbk Wai.nct Mr. J. S. Clarke will appear this
evening as Heury Dove" in Harried Life, and as
'Timothy Toodles."
At the Arch the new comedy entitled M. P. will
be repeated this evening.
At the CnesNCT the burlesque of Ernani will be
performed this evening.
At iub American a variety entertainment will be
given this evening.
At the Eleventh Street Opera House an
attractive programme of minstrelsy will be pre
sented this evening.
At the A urn Street Oteha House an Interesting
variety of Ethiopian comicalities is announced for
this evening.

CIRCULAR TO
FRENCH DEESS FABRICS.
Although both Great Britain and Germany furnish this
country with a very large amotant of Dresa Textures,
nearly all the finest and most fashionable are of French
manufacture, and hence a great scarcity of French
goods, owing to the war, was anticipated early in the
season. All the French goods that can possibly reach
us this season are now here, and after a careful exaini-
nation of the market we find tfoat although the BULII

able extent, it is made up of large I 7 DISC XIX XVX I

is more particularly the case in the article of XtLACXX
