    LITERATURE.
HE VIEW OF XEW BOOKS.
"Hargneiite Kent," by Marion Wayne,
which has just been published by J. 13. Lip
fiticott & Co., is a Btory in which there is
less art than matter. From all its internal
evidences we should pronounce it the effort
of a comparatively inexperienced writer,
whose enthusiasm for her subject has some
times obscured her judgment, but in spite of
its crudities it is a story of very decided
merit, Btich as could not have proceeded from
the pen of any but a writer of much ability.
The Btory itself is entertaining, and it is en
livened by some really admirable sketches of
character aud some scenes of considerable
dramatic power. Although we look upon it
mainly as a promise of even better things in
the future, the average renders of fiction will
find much good entertainment in its perusal.
Claxton, Remsen & Xlaffelnnger send us
of the recent publications of Harper & Bro
thers the following:
"A School History of the United States,"
by David 1$. Scott, is a brief but comprehen
sive summary of the leading events from the
discovery of the country to the present time.
The chapters that treat of the rebellion are
in particular very satisfactory; the move
ments of the different campaigns being, a
far as possible, kept together, so that an ex
cellent idea of the progress of the military
events is presented to the student. At the
close of various marked periods, general re
flections are introduced, and questions for
review ere interpersed throughout the
volume. The book is profusely illustrated by
fine wood-cuts and numerous maps.
"Mental Arithmetic," by John II. French,
1SL. D., is the third volume of French's
arithmetical series. It is based upon a philo
sophical p'an, and by the aid of cuts and
diagrams it makes plain to the comprehension
, of the pupil the elementary principles of
arithmetic-, while by its progressive arrange-
nent it stimulates his mental faculties.
"Michael Rudolph, 'the Bravest of the
Brave,' " by Miss Eliza A. Dupuy, published
by T. B. Peterson & Brothers, is an historical
romance based upon a tradition that Marshal
Key was none other than a hero of our own
Revolutionary war named Michael Rudolph.
Miss Dupuy apparently believes in the truth
of this tradition, but, whether she does or not,
she has made use of it with a great deal of
ingenuity, and "Michael Rudolph" i3 an ex
ceedingly interesting and exciting story.
rorter & Coates send us "The Ame
rican Fopular Speaker." This is a collec
tion of pieces in prose and verse for read
ing and declamation. , The compiler has
shown good taste and judgment in many of
his selections, but he might have extended
bis researches in English and American lite
rature still further with advantage, as a good
many of the extracts included in this book
are venerable old stagers that have done duty
in speakers and readers innumerable ever
since buch aids to education were thought of.
Forter & Coates also send U3 "Elements of
Astronomy," J. Norman Lockyer, and "Ser-
mons Treached in Memorial Church, Balti
more," by Rev. Octavius Perinchief. Tub
lishfd by D. Appleton & Co.
"The Elements of Astronomy" is a re
print, with some alterations to adapt it to the
schools of the United States, of a work that
is deservedly popular in England, and we re
commend it as one of the best elementary
works on the subject we have seen. The re
sults of the most recent astronomical inves
tigations and discoveries are given, and the
Bptctrurn analysis in particular is explained
in a very full and satisfactory manner. A
colored plate giving the spectra of the sun,
stars, and nebulie is the best illustration of
this interesting subject we have ever seen in
a work designed for popular use, and it will
aid greatly in enabling those who use the
book to understand one of the most beautiful
and important results of inodorn science.
The volume of "Sermons", by Rev. Octa
vius Perinchief treats a great variety of sub
jects from a plain and practical Christian
standpoint, and we commend it to the notice
of religious readers of all classes.
"The French Verb," by Ch. Reynal,
published by George R. Lockwood, which
has been sent us by E. H. Butler & Co., is a
little manual that will be cordially welcomed
by French students. It contains the theory
and model conjugations of all French verbs,
and also a dictionary of all such verbs as pre
sent any peculiarities in their uses or 'conju
gations, with references to the models and to
complete tableaux of all the irregular and de
fective verbs. Such a book as this will need
no special reoommendation to teachers or
6tudents of the French language, as it sup
plies an important desideratum in the list of
French text-books.
The American Sunday School Union has
just published the following religions storios
for children: ."Little May's Legacy;" "The
Children of Long Ago," "The Clouded Gem,"
and "The Valley of Stains."
The Sunday Magazine, Good Words, and
Coed Words for the Young, for October,
which we have received from J. B. Lippin
cott & Co., are, as usual, full of entertaining
reading matter from the pens of some of the
Lest English writers of the day. All three of
these magazines are profusely illustrated.
The October number of The PennMonthly
Magazine contains several able articles,
amoDg which the most prominent is one en
titled "Wealth: of what does it consist?" by
Henry C. Carey.
I'tterii' Musical Monthly for October has
an excellent variety of popular inusio arranged
for ihe piano.
