John Krnl.
That John Real will be hung on Friday Is as
certain as almost any future event can be. The
news that the Governor had refused to change
the sentence of death which had been pro
nounced against him into that of imprisonment
lor life was told him yesterday by the warden
of the Tombs, and Real appears to "bear up
tinder" the disappointment with considerable
fortitude. lie feels, as under the circumstances
It Is very natural that he should feel, that the
murder of Mr. Nathan did not tend to make the
Governor lenient. He evidently thinks rather
hard of thor.e newspaper representatives who
went away from their interviews with him to
prepare distorted reports only of all that he had
paid. He is in that condition when Religion
does all that 6he can for him, and when
the World stands by with folded arms
and tosses her head at Religion. If the solemn
Statements of a man to whom eternity is very
near are to be believed, he was so persecuted by
Officer Smcdick that his killing of that officer
Involuntary as he believes it to have been was
due to the instinct of self-preservation. In
view of these statements Governor Hodman has
been pleaded with by Real's counsel and friends,
and subjected to an amount of pressure such as
is seldom exercised by the counsel or friends of
a criminal of 69 humble a class of society. He
Will die in the Catholic faith, and on the day
preceding his execution will probably partake
cf the communion. There is a good deal of
curiosity to see the hanging. Among newspaper
offices more than one application has been made
for the use of such of the Sheriff's invitations,
conferring the office of deputy sheriff, as may
not be needed by the reporters.

The ideal home of mlnstrelism Is to be realized
In the new opera house that Dan Bryant is
building on Twenty-third street, near Sixth ave
nue. Burnt cork is becoming elegant. The
wench business is to be glorified. The new
Ethiopian theatre, which Is to bo opened in the
fall, will be expensively adorned, the proscenium
boxes will be sumptuous, and It Is to be pre
sumed that the character of the entertainment
will correspond to that of the house. Three of
the other theatres will open this month, Booth's
and Niblo's on the evening of next Monday
week and the Olympic on the 23d. Niblo's has
been cleaned and painted. It needed both
badly. That silly taogle of Impossibilities, The
Duke's Motto, is to be the piece first produced
there. The only theatrical attractions in this
city at present are Madame Lanncr and Bertha
Llnd. I have spoken of tho "poetic feet" and
''intellectual dancing" of Madame Lan
ner, but while employing these term3 did
not forget that they were unusual and
liable to be misconstrued. For example, we do
not look for intellectuality in dancers. Even
the very great ones, tho Ellslers and Taglionis,
evince very little brain cult ure. Life is not long
enough to permit them to equally cultivate the
heel and the head. Tho gossip that is babbled
In the newspapers respecting Morlacchl's intel
lectual taste and musical acquirements is very
interesting. I will not undertake to say whether
it is true or not; but if it is true, that instance
is an exceptional one. Nevertheless, a great
dancer may have had something of the educa
tion of an actress. In that case the intellect is
put to work. She is not all leg, and there is
some proportion between the developments of
mind and muscle. This seems to be the case with
Madame Lanner. Without claiming to "know
of my own knowledge," as a lawyer would say,
it seems to me either as though she must be
Intellectual, or, if a somewhat peculiar phrase
ology be admissible, as though she must have
strong IntellesUal impulses. Figures, steps,
and enterprises which in another would seem
like the inventions of vulgar audacity are, with
her, poetic and refined. There are coarse men
who will never see la Terpsichore anything more
than an appeal to flesh and passion. For my
part I have no objection to define dancing as
the language of legs; but I must be permitted to
make this discrimination, that the majority of
dancers make it a language that corresponds to
the diction of those nameless books whose pub
lication is prohibited by law, while a few, like
Madame Lanner, invest it U'lta a pare and
poetic rhythm. It would be unjust to Miss
Llnd, however, not to acknowledge that a large
proportion of the principal dancing of the even
ing falls to her. In the new ballet of Sitala; or.
The Juggler's Daughter, a trinity of dances,
consisting of three in one, and of remarkable
character, U interpreted by her to perfection,
and creates an enthusiasm that would be un
usual in winter time but is extraordinary at this
season. The dances are called "The Peasaat
ess," "The Coquette," and "The Sylph."
When Miss Lind first appears the
peasantess' dress which she wears of course
carefully conceals the dresses of tho coquette
and the sylph. When the first dance is con
cluded Miss Lind retires, and during the ap
plause slips off the rustic frock, and ere the
c'applDg of hands has died out, appears glitter
ing in the exquisite costume of the "Coquette.
A similar change of costume characterizes the
conclusion of the second dance, and signalizes
her appearance in the third. Each dance has
peculiar idiosyncrasies, and is performed by Miss
Llnd with an ability to which theatre-goers in
this country arc almost entire strangers. The
conclusion of the first act of Sitala likewise
creates excessive delight. It Introduces, without
indecency, an approach to the genuine can-can
nearer than that made by any other performers
who have as yet appeared on the New York
stage. This can-can, which, upon the bills, is
warily called "quadrille," is pervaded by the
refinement of Madame Lanner, and is therefore
kept from becoming repugnant. The success with
which it has been received is so immense that
it ought to be reserved for the last thing In the
ballet. Those who see the first act see the best
portions, and lose little by going away. The
deserved and unusual popularity of Madame
Lanner and Miss Lind is my reason for referring
to them at such length.
N. 13 Vet Twenty, third Street
is still the object of general contemplation, and
will remain so until the murderer is discovered,
or until the mystery, with no abatement of
, obscurity, passes into a tradition and takes its
place beside such enigmas as the Burdell-Cun-
! ningham and the Rogers assassinations. On my
way home from a theatre I passed the house at
midnight on Monday. The gas-lamps of the
orpoeite pavement threw their radiance full
upon it. Not a ray ef light came from any of
the windows, but through tho glass above the
front door the lights in the ball could be seen,
' and upon these was fixed the gaze of a group of
people stationed on that side of Tweaty-third
atreet which is bounded by the southern facade
Of the Fifth Avenue Hotel. Those gossippers
who stretch their necks there lor an hour at a
time fasten upon the most cobwebby of imagi
nary clue. Now It ia Washington NathuwhJ
committed the murder, now Fredorlck, now
both, now neither, now young Kelly, the house
keeper's son, now a hypothetical plumber.
Meanwhile, let ns hope that Superintendent
Jourdan and his detectives will keep their own
counsel until the doer of the deed is discovered
or until all hopes of discovering him are dis
pelled. Ali Baba.

A3 MANY OF TUB COMPLAINTS OP CHILDREN Origi
nate from the Irritation and the derangements
caused by worms, a remedy that will effectually rid
the system of these pests Is well calculated to be of
great benefit, and to be frequently required In every
amlly. Dr. D. Jayne's Tonlo Vermifuge Is such a
preparation, not only certain to destroy worms, but
most excellent for the purposes of a General Tonlo,
strengthening the stomach and digestion, and dissi
pating any febrile tendency in the system. In Dys
pepsia, young and old will find it equally effective,
and altogether, no remedy of more general applica
tion could be kept In the household. Sold every
where. Small size, 87 cents; double size, CO cents
per bottle.
A Most Delightful Dessert may be found In
the new article of food, Sea Moss Farine, which can
be purchased for twenty-live cents a package, that
will produce sixteen quarts of most excellent blanc
mange, or a proportionate quantity of custards, light
puddings, farina, creams, sauces, gruels, Charlotte
Russc, etc. This seems almost Incredible, but It Is
vouched for by ladles of the highest respectability,
who append their names to their statements. The
company state at least fifty delicious dishes can
be made from the Sea Moss Farine, and give In
their circular the receipts for many of them. We
consider Mr. Rand's discovery a highly important
one for the millions, and Indeed for all classes of
society, In these stringent times.
