KEBIOVS ENGAGEMENT AT SAARBRDCK THE
FRENCH INVADE RHENISH PRUSSIA KING WIL-.
LIAM AT MAVENCE INCREASE OF THE ITALIAN
ARMY.
Paris, Aug. 2. Prussia demands of Austria
explanations as to why she is arming. The
war expenses of Prussia are 25,000,000 francs
per day. The Prince Imperial is in military
training. Thirty thousand soldiers are billetod
on tho city of Hamburg. The Empress of
the French has visited the army.
Berlin, Aug. 2. The scene on the de
parture of the King for the seat of war, on
Sunday morning, was extraordinary. The
King rode from his palace to the railway
station in an open carriage with the Queen.
He wore a shoit military cloak and his helmet
was placed on the Beat by his side. The car
riage was surrounded, followed, and fre
quently stopped by the immense multitude,
wild with emotion, Bhouting farewells and
benedictions.
The houses were hung with flags and fes
tooned with flowers, and at tho railway sta
tion arches were erected and a patriotio in
scription displayed. The Queen, weeping,
parted from the King with repeated embraces.
When his Majesty, from the platform of the
car, finally saluted the crowd, the scene wat
indescribable. The people were frenzied
with enthusiasm, and the entire court, ladies
and all, mingled with the crowd, participating
in the emotion, surrounded the old soldier,
and bade him good-bye with every demonstra
tion of loyalty and devotion. Bismarck and
Generals Moltke and Von Boom were present,
and were repeatedly cheered.
London, Aug. 2. Evidence is hourly ac
cumulating of the superiority of the needle
gun over the Chassepot, and this fact creates
deep concern in France. The Pali Mall
Gazette estimates the Prussian army on the
frontier now musters ."00,000 men. Extreme
activity is noted in English ports and dock
yards, and extensive preparations are made
to put the coast in a defensive condition to
resist attack.
Paris, Aug. 2 Evening. Official de
spatches from Metz announce that at 11 A.
M. to-day the French had a serious engage
ment with the Prussians. Our army took the
offensive, crossed the frontier, aud invaded
Prussia. In spite of the numbers and posi
tion of the enemy, a few of our battalions
were sufficient to carry tho heights which
overlook Saarbruck, and our artillery was not
slow to drive the enemy from the town. The
(la ii of our troops was so great that our
losses were slight. The engagement com
menced at 11 A. M. and ended at 1 P. M.
The Emperor assisted at the operations, and
the Prince Imperial, who accompanied him
everywhere, received on this first field of
battle his baptism of fire. His presenoe of
mind and sang froid in danger were worthy
of the name he bears. The Emperor returned
" to Metz at 4 P. M. .
London, Aug. 2. Itnssia indignantly repu
diates the design of taking advantage of the
war in Europe to invade .the Dunubian Prin
cipalities. Florence, Aug. 2. In conformity with a
desire of a council of generals held on June
23d, the effective force of the Italian army is
being rapidly raised to 120,000 men. A oamp
of 20,000 men is established between Mantua
and Verona, and two catnos of observation are
forming on the Pontifical frontier. It is the
intention of the Italian Government to enter
Home as soon as the French army withdraws,
on the plea of protection.
i -The report of a bible aeut In Indiana
represents that in the city of South Bend there
are 137 families without the Scripture. Of this
number it appears that sixty-oua refused to
receive a copy. If a similar report were to be
made about our own city, we doubt If tho expe
rience would bv 'iiaw so "uicoumiutf."

NOTICE TO MARIN EKi
CfPWi X, vl ui unr a. u, ilazod,
New York 1st lr.n. from Portlnni, Conn., report
Stratford Point light, from 10 P. M. Saturday until
Sunday morning, noariy out. The capUln could o'
serve It perfectly, being about two miles oir an1 be
calmed, the light being a revolving light, and of the
best kind. It did not then revolve at all, It being a
dead, dnll light, hardly larger than a common houre
light. Captain Mack also complaint) that on Junes
he with eight othrr vessels were sounding their way
into New Haven harbor, and no fog-hell was rung
or to be heard for two hours nd a half that the fog
iBRted ; when they arrived ahrcasi of the light threi
distinct taps were given, then no more until they
were well up the bay. Iu loggy weather they do not
ring the bell regularly at New Haven point, only
about the tlae when the New York steamers are to
pass the point; when the steamers have passed they
stop perhaps once and a while, or perhaps not any
more. Captain Mack gave a report of it to the re-
fiortcr of the New Daven f'al'atlinm, to have it pu!
Ished, so as to have the bell rung more reaularly In
foggy weather. It could not be entertained by him
as it would Injure him, for the power that kept the
lighthouse keeper there holds him also.
The schr I. H. Woodbury, which was run into and
niink near the Cross Rip light Ship, lies directly in
the track ol nhippirg passing that point, and Is a
very dangerous obstacle to navigation.
