Late on Saturday night Lieutenant I"la
hrty, with a force of twenty men, made a
descent npon a disorderly dance-honse at No.
7?.T Bt. Mary street, kept by a Mrs. Ornisley.
Jhirty-two inmates, male and female, black
nsd white, were arrested.
Catharine McCloskey, aged thirty-five
years, was fonnd at three o'clock yesterday
morning lying in Seventh street, near Hain
bridge, with both of her feet badly crushed,
supposed to have been caused by a railroad
car. She was taken to the Pennsylvania
Hospital.
Yesterday afternoon the religions cere
monies attending the Jaying of the corner
stone of the new Lutheran Chapel, on Thirty
eighth street, near llaverford, took place in
the presence of a largo concourse of persons,
and were participated in by ltev. Dr. Hutter,
Iter. Dr. Conrad, and the pastor of the
church.
On Saturday evening policeman No. 4i
of the Eleventh district, was discharged by
the Chief of Police for drunkenness, lie was
on the platform of a 1'ifth street car, carry
ing on an exciting argument with twociti.ens,
when noticed by High Constable Carley.
Tbe latter ordered him ofi' the vehicle, and
then took his star from him. About this
time Chief -Mulholland appeared and dis
charged the intosi'-ated guardir.n of the pcacp.
Olmstead Kollins, a colored boy, eighteen
years old, was arrested on Saturday at Atlan
tic City, and brought to Philadelphia to
answer the charge of committing an outrage
ous assault upon the person of a little colored
girl named Harriet E. Buck, in Earolayjstreot,
on the Q 1st of May Inst. The officers have
been on the track of Kollins for some time
past, and traced him to Cape May, which
place, it is alleged, he was compelled to leave
on account of his thievish propensities. He
went from there to Atlantic City, whero ho
he was found by the officer?.
; The funeral of Mathias W. Furey, one
of the members of the Philadelphia (late
MoyaniensiDg) Hose Company, who died
from injuries received at the tiro at Messrs.
Newhall, Borie .' f'o.s sugar house, last
Tuesday eveniDg, took place yesterday after
noon from his lute residence, No. ;:." South
Seventh street. The streets in the neighbor
hood were crowded with spocf ators, and the
funeral was one of the largest which has
occurred in Philadelphia for a longtime past.
Mr. Frank Fritz, a member of the Philadel
phia Hose Company, who was so seriously
burned at the same lire, died at the Pennsyl
vania Hospital on Saturday ovening, from
rbe effects of his injuries. He was married,
nnd resided in Ninth street, noar Ellsworth.
Yesterday morning Policeman John
Honey made an arrest at Twenty-fourth and
Spring Garden Btreets. While taking the
prisoner to the station several loungers who
had been lonngiDg about the corner came up
and htrnck the ollicer in the face and on the
back of the head with a hard instrument. He
drew bis billy, when he was struck with a
blackjack or other weapon on the nose, filling
his eyeB with blood and blinding him for the
time. His billy was then taken from him,
and he was beaten with it badly on tho head.
His prisoner was rescued, and he is now con
fined to his house, No. 1!'04 Itotchford street.
Late in the day Officer Ci alien, of the same
district, arrested James Monaghan on sus
picion of being concerned in the affair.
Monaghan was held by Alderman Tancoast in
$1000 bail for a further hearing.
A meeting of journeymen lasters was
held on Saturday afternoon, at the public
house on Vine street, above Fifth. The
meeting was held for the purpose of confer
ring together in reference to the propriety of
forming a Journeymen Lasters' Union or
Lodge, whose object should be the mutual
protection of members of tho profession in
their attempts to maintain a fair rate of
wages for their labor, and to provide for men
during strikes, or when out of employment
owing to sickness or by accident. Tho sub
ject of strikes was also considered, the ma
jority appearing to think that they should
never bo inaugurated when they can possibly
be avoided, a fair understonding'.betwoen the
employers and employes having been fre
quently found productive of good results. It
was resolved that the representatives present
from different manufactories should lay the
subject which the meeting had been called to
consider before the journeymen iu their re
spective manufactories, and that the result of
their labors should be reported at the next
meeting. It was also resolved that all the
lasters of the city be notified of the time of
holding the next meeting and invited to
attend the tsame. The meeting then ad

Kiver insurgents.
Large orders for hay. for the French
armv. have been received in St. Louis.
The "th Maryland Itegiment returned to
Baltimore, from Cape May, on Saturday.
During August Mr. Boutwell will sell
five millions of cold and buy six millions of
bonds.
Another terrible tragedy marks the Bolton-Dickens
feud in Tennessee, Colonel
Thomas Dickens having been shot and killed
while riding on Big Creek.
Threo negro children, held in bondage
and slavery since the war, in Baton llouge
parish. La., and treated with groat cruelty,
were released on Tuesday last by a United
States Commissioner.

to-day publishes Count Benedetti s explana
tion of the secret treaty affair. It is well
known that Bismarck made Prance an offer,
both before and after the war with Austria.
The substance of the offer was that France
bhould take Belgium as a compensation for
the aggrandizement of Prussia, but the Liu-
poror in all oases declined the proposition.
Tbe very moment the treaty of Prague was
concluded, Bismarck again betrayed his
desire to restore the equilibrium, and made
several proposals looking t combinations
affectiiig the integrity of states bordermg on
France. During one of these conversations
Bismarck dictated to Benedetti this secret
treaty, tha project which has just been made
public and which Bismarck has kept ever
since. This accounts ior its being in the
handwriting of Benedetti. Ienedelti gave
notice of the contents of the proposed treaty
to his Emperor's government at the time, but
the proposition was promptly rejected. Be
nedetti -adds that the King of Prussian as
Xiot favorable to Bismarck's plans.

Trenoh and rrtssian forces har commenced
in Baden. Pour Prussian army corps are on
the Jtbino; the Prussian have rnored to the
batiks of the titer, Many families at leaving
Baden for Switzerland. A 'Gefniaii banker
residing in Paris has been arrested.
Three Prussian spies bave also been capi
tnred here by the police. Prince Napoleon
will soon leave here for the Baltic. .
At the government arsenals in France,
"0,000 Chassepots were turned out each week
of July, and in August there will bo manu
factured 47,000; in September, 5::, 000, and in
October, 00,000 per week.
Austria has given her sanction to the taking
of Borne by Italy. ,

tacked Saarbrncken in largely superior force,
but were vigorously repulsed.
It is officially stated that Lord Loftus, Bri
tish Ambassador, has gone to rotsdnm, pro
bably to escape tho discussions upon the neu
trality preserved by England in such a very
extraordinary fashion.
Merlin, July .11. King William, on leaving
for tho army, issued a manifesto in which he
declares that he goes to fight for the honor
of Germany, and calls rtpon the whole nation
to rise as one man. The King also grants
full amnesty for political offenses.

Lis staff have gone to the front.
Sa Afium'c'K, July r.O. Early this morning a
large force of Bazaine's division nnd four
pieces of artillery advanced to this position,
Apparently with a view of dislodging tho
Pinssians. They met a force of volunteer
guards, who had taken position a mile and a
balffrom Saarbruck. The Prussians attacked
the enemy with vi'or, and atter a sharp fight
the French were repulsed, losing tweuty
men. The Prussians lost eight men
