of Harrison, Havemeyer t Co. He-embark
iiig, the party started for Bridesbnrg. and
landing there visited the shops of the I! rides
brtrg Manufacturing Company, where they
witnessed the manufacture of cotton and
woollen machinery, the successful working
of which they had beheld earlier in the day.
After the inspection a photograph of a group
of the vibitorn was taken on the ground. The
party then boarded the boat, and pushing off
into the stream in a few moments were in
vited to Bit down to dinner. During dinner
time the boat proceeded .up the river, and
when near Beverly turned about and steamed
for the city. The party reached Chesnut
etreet wharf about six o'clock, and the visitors
returned to the hotel.
In the evening, on the invitation of the
Committee on Guests, the members of the
Congressional Committees attended at the
Union League House, with the exception of
Hon. John M. Kice, of Kentucky, and Hon.
Morton S. 'Wilkinson, of Minnesota.
They were received by Hon. Morton Mo
Michael and the members of the Union
League, and conducted to the dining-room,
where a collation had been prepared, Mr.
McMichael taking the head of the table as
President of the League. Speeches were made
by Mr. McMichael, Hon. N. 13. Judd, of
Illinois, Hon. John A. Bingham. John L.
Hhoemaker, and Hon. Williatn 1). Kelley.
"When midnight approached, the assemblage,
in accordance with the rules of the Union
League was by the President adjourned, and
the company dispersed.
The members of the Congressional Com
mittee were taken in charge informally yes
terday by some of our citizens and their own
friends, and driven through the Park, along
the "Wissabickon, and through Oermantown.
It was originally proposed that they should
be taken to Beading and the coal fields yes
terday, but that project was abandoned, and
the visitors started for Washiagton last night.
On Saturday afternoon the remains of
Miss Sallie Brearley and Mr. Albert N. Baker,
who were drowned in the river Schuylkill,
were buried from their late residences. The
funeral of Mr. Baker took place at 2 o'clock,

place at Odd Fellows' Cemetery. The funeral
service of Miss Brearley took place at the
Church of the Nativity, Eleventh and Mount
Vernon streets. A large congregation was in
attendance, and the exercises were conducted
by Rev. T. B. Simes, rector of the Gloria Dei
Church. The interment took place at the
graveyard of the "Old Swedes Church."
Last evening, about half -past 7 o'clock, a
quarrel took place at Thirteenth and Ells
worth streets, between James McGee and
Michael C. McLaughlin, in relation to an
blleged insult offered by McLaughlin to the
niece of McGee. While passing the man in
question, it is alleged that he turned on
McGee and fired several times at him with a
revolver, one of the balls entering the shoul
der and causing a painful wound. The per
petrator of the act was taken to the Seven-'
teenth District Station, to await a hearing,
tnd McGee was removed to the hospital.
Yesterday the one hundredth and seven
tieth anniversary of the Glorei Dei (Old
Swedes) Church was celebrated with services
appropriate to the occasion. The interior of.
the church was appropriately decorated with
flowers and evergreens, and in the morning a
historical sermon was preached by the rector,
ltev. Snyder B. Simes. In the afternoon
liev. J. T. Burk delivered a discourse, in,
which he alluded to the Christian work that
Lad been accomplished in the venerable
church, and countless blessings that have
been received by those who have been
tmorig its worshippers. In the evening
Bight He v. Bishop Stevens preached an elo
quent sermon and confirmed a number of
persons. !
At a quarter past ten o'clock on Saturday
eight a pair of mules attached to an ice
wagon in front of a confectionery store on
Bllsworth Btreet, between Tenth and
Eleventh, started oil across (he railroad track
just as car No. J2 of the Union Passenger
Railway was passing. The car came into col
lision with the. ice cart, and the front end of
the car was completely smashed in, alarming
the passengers extremely, one lady being so
badly frightened that she fainted. The driver
of the car made a narrow escape by getting
inside of the car. Fortunately no one was
hurt.
Shortly after two o'clock yesterday morn
ing the carpenter shop of W. P. Bates, No.
1130 Mark's lane, was totally destroyed by
lire. Loss, $500. The fire is supposed to be
the work of an incendiary, as a few minutes
before it was discovered three men were seen
to run out of the place. It was subsequently
ascertained that the door of the fire-proof
safe was forced. A stable adjoining, occu
pied by Philip Barr, was slightly damaged by
the flames. While returning from the fire
the Niagara Hose and the Franklin Engine
Company engaged in a street fight at Ninth
and Walnut streets, during which Peter Eu
l enburg was badly beaten about the head.
Mr. Charles Stevens, aged about thirty
years, who lived with Mr. Asa Heins, a far
mer at Moorestown, New Jersey, was al
most instantly killed on Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Stevens was driving a pair of horses to a
wagon down the hill at Market and Front
Mrtets; he fell out, and the wheels passed
over him, killing him almost instantly. , The
body of deceased was taken to Camden. The
deceased leaves a wife and one child.
At 9 o'clock last evening an explosion of
