KNIGHT & SON, 1222 CHESNUT StREET, it PHILADELPHIA. MEDIO AL THE THEORY or TUB Age in Regard to Rheumatism. The method of treating rheumatism unfor tunately never contemplates the absolute cure of the disease, and only aims to afford tem porary relief to the afflicted. Its object, like that of all physicking and doctoring, is to assist nature; for, after all, the real avocation of ft physician is simply that of a nurse who aids nature to throw off disease. In the case, however, of rheumatism, neither the aid of the physician nor the struggles of outraged nature are equal to the emergency. Thia chronic affection has, indeed, long been a baffler to medical skill. Temporary relief is all the medical men profess to be able to give, and rheumatism has indeed been, in a pecu niary point of view, a complete godsend to the poorer members of the medical profes sion. To such young and poor physicians, rheumatism is a great boon, but to the gene ral public it is a great curse. The discoveries, however, of the past thirty years, and the unprecedented strides which medical science has made during the past quarter of a cen tury, have been instrumental in reducing this obstinate and rebellious disease completely under the power of a scientific practitioner. The only remedy which has thus far been found successful is to be obtained in this city. It has not been in existence long enough to drive chronic rheumatism out of the world, but that its effect will in time be nothing less has now been abundantly proved. Some thirty-seven years ago, there graduated at the University of Pennsylvania a gentleman who has since become widely known to the scien tific world. We refer to J. P. Fitter, M. D. Dr. Fitter was also a student of the celebrated Dr. Chapman, who founded in 1817 the Phila delphia Medical Institute, and to whom, on account of his gTeat merit as a Professor of the Institutes of Medicine, students took the same delight in pointing as the Scotch theo logical scholars did to the celebrated Dr. Chalmers, saying at the same time, with honest pride, "I studied under him." At college young Fitler was a marked man on account not only of his generally studious behavior, but on account of the very unusual attention which he bestowed on the vexed subject of chronic rheumatism. On one occasion when Dr. Chapman remonstrated with him plea santly concerning the great attention he was giving his darling branch of study, he replied, "I intend that rheumatism shall no longer be a chronic disease, for I shall bring it under the control, if not of the old, at least of my own pharmacopoea. At that time, this am bitious speech coming from so young a man was regarded generally, among the physioians who heard it, as a spurt of pride. The genuine stuff, however, was in the man who uttered it, and in a very few years after we find the same Dr. Chapman encouraging Dr. Fitter to proceed with his "Rheumatic lucubrations," as he believed he had discovered "something not only entirely new, but something which must prove eminently beneficial to the cause of suffering humanity." A compliment from so distinguished a quarter had the effect of setting Dr. Fitter to work with redoubled energy. After long study and years of ex perimenting in publio and private laborato ries, both in Europe and America, the Doctor produced his Vegetable Rheumatic Remedy. This specific is taken inwardly, because Dr. Fitler has become convinoed that the only means by which the seat of rheumatio disease can be effectually reached is through the stomach. The remedy has now become uni versal, and is ordered by the different facul ties the same as they order Gregory's mixture, Nichol's Peruvian bark, etc. etc. When the Doctor made the discovery of his vegetable remedy, he communicated the fact, but not the secret, to the medical faculty, The faculty informed him that, as a regular physician, he must communicate his secret to his brother physicians "for the good of science." The Doctor, however, concluded, and we think with eminent propriety, that if Dr. Gregory (whose high social position in Europe corresponded pretty much with that of Dr. Fitler in America) had not impaired his position by retaining the secret of his celebrated mixture, there was no reason why the same law would not apply in this country. Acting on this principle, the Doctor proceeded and took his own course. The result was that he brought the faculty up to his own standard, and to-day the medicine of the Doctor is an acknowledged prescription for rheumatism among regular physicians. In spite of the f aot that this city is full of colleges and scientific men, we cannot close this article without expressing our municipal pride that we have men like Dr. Fitler, men who are not afraid to brave publio opinion, and not afraid of being styled innovators by the unthinking, provided they can, by their "innovating," confer lasting benefits upon mankind.
