Thane Indian.
Red Cloud, Red Dog, Red Fly. Red 8hlrt,
Brave Bear, Little Bear, Yellow Bear, 8ittln?
Bear, Rock Bear, and Living Bear have been
bere. You know whom I mean. I allude to
the Indians. Their beads, shells, and toma
hawks have been seen at the St. Nicholas,
Central Park, and the Grand Opera House. The
Noble Savage has been attracting a great deal of
attention. lie is somewhat different from those
primeval dajs when Columbus discovered him
In virtuous nudity. His attire is no longer con
fined to a cincture of feathers, nor is his con
versation limited to a warwhoop. He wears the
breeches as well as the blanket, and instead of
wielding the tomahawk affects the lorgnette.
From criticizing coryphees at the opera house
he returns to snub his squaws in the parlor of
his hotel. He has burled the calumet only to
take kindly to the walking-stick, and don't think
his white brother such a fraud when he
is ordering all the things on the bill of fare at
his white brother's hotels, or exclaiming "How's
that for a high ?" over a game of All Fours.
New York has rushed to see him, has blocked
tip the halls and lobbies of the hotels at which
he put up, and has rendered impassable the
streets and avenues through which he was an
nounced to drive. Wherever he has gone in
this metropolis he has been exceedingly well
received. In fact, too much so. The irrepressi
ble reporter has tracked him to his bed-room
door, and bribed the chambermaid as to his
wearing a night-shirt and tasbeled cap. Bohe
mians fought for the honor ot entertaining him.
Yesterday afternoon Red Cloud and his staff of
warriors held a reception at the Cooper Insti
tute. Ever' square inch of that big hall was
eccnpied. Not one more person could have
been squeezed into it and stood upright with
comfort. lie talked much of the wrongs of the
red man. He wants seventeen hundred horses,
which Peter Cooper promised to provide him in
ase the United States should not. During
his speech his girdle got undone
and fell to his feet, displaying an Indian-looking
breech-clout and a civilized-looking shirt. The
accident would have put out any one but an
Indian. The sublime apathy of his race came
to his assistance. He stooped, picked up the
girdle, adjusted it leisurely, and, continuing his
oration, converted the accident into a figure of
speech. Oh these noble savages! How it does
take off the poetry of one's prejudices to be
brought into contact with them! These now in
the city are no better than the average Indian
who was hired for exhibition by Mr. Barnum in
time past, and is hired for a similar purpose by
Mr. Wood in time present. They are as full of
vermin as a Third avenue car. They are so
morbidly licentious that connubial constancy is
the last virtue they would think of practising.
They like liquor with the madness of the inter
mittent drunkard, and the hotter and fierier
they get it the more they like it. Your expen
sive rum won't do for them. They affect some
thing that scorches like lightning and pricks
like carpet nails.
Tommy Ilolden.
You remember Tommy Ilolden, poor Tommy
Ilolden, who, for the last twenty years, had
helped more men and women to bodily and
eplrltu.il perdition than any other man of equal
opportunities. He has gone tohls long rest,
by wh'ch I mean not heaven but the State Prison
of Nt w Jersey. He was a man of great posses
sions, and had built up his wealth on bucket
shops, 6lums, gambling-hells, and all sorts of
wicked places. He was the great creator of
aldermen and public justices, and was despot
over one of the vilest dens that ever disgraced
New York. He goes to prison for ten years,
bis offense being burglary. He was sentenced
by Judge Randolph. Let us hope that his fate
will be a warning to Water street, a beacon to
the whilom associates of the "wickedest man."
