TIIE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE.
The meeting of this association last even
ing was called to order with the president,
Coleman Sellers, in the chair. After the
usual business of minutes, etc., at the request
of the president, Mr. Robert Briggs, who htid
just returned from a visit to Europe, gave a
description of several matters he had there
observed interesting to engineers. . He spoke
of the improvements in wood-working
machinery, in iron furnaces, with special
reference to stoves and heaters for the hot
Most of cas works, and of the architectural
improvements in Paris, which seemed to
solve some of the most pressing social pro
blems of the day. His remarks were of great
interest, and were highly applauded.
The resilient Secretary then read his report,
which touched upon many interesting topics,
and included a description of the reversible
filter of J. A. Joseph, and the signal apparatus
of W. W. Cooley and W. H.' Deitrich.
A letter was then read from Professor
Morton, tendering his resignation, as fol
lows: To the President and Members of the Franklin
Institute Oentlemen : Having accepted a position
In a distant city, which necessitates hiy removal
from tills vicinity, It Is with deep regret that I now
tender my resignation of the otllce of resident He
cretary to your Institution, an office which your kind
and generous support has rendered It a great plea
sure to hold. It would be impossible u express
adequately my sense of your unvarying kindnes,
but 1 hope by various means to demonstrate in the
future my abiding sense of the same, and my lively
interest In tbis venerable and useful society. With
renewed expressions of my thanks, I remain,
Respectfully yours, Henry Mokton.
Mr. Robert Briggs moved the acoeptanca
of this resignation, and in connection with
bis motion spoke in the highest terms of
Professor Morton, and of the success of his
administration in the institute, and in its
journal, which had now assumed a prominent
position both at home and abroad.
Mr. Hector Orr seconded the motion with
sentiments of regret, and with the best wishes
for the retiring secretary.
The president stated that Professor Morton
had consented to continue his charge of the
journal of the institute, which had met with
such success under his management. Pro
fessor Morton's resignation was then accepted,
and a vote of thanks tendered for his ser
vices. .
The meeting was then adjourned.
The position accepted by Professor Morton
is that of president of a college of mechanical
engineering, to be erected in Hoboken, op
posite New York, under an endowment of
f (M),wo by Mr. uawin Stevens, late of that
place.
THE ANCIENT LAKES OF NORTH
AMJJiIUA.
Professor J. S. Newberry, of Cleveland, re
cently read a paper in that city. We extract
the following: , . i
The changes that have taken plaoe in the
topography of the Western Continent have
aflected greatly the animal and vegetable life
of a country at that time as beautiful and
fertile as any other. The tertiary deposits
of the eastern portion of the continent were
marine, and at the Far West also there is a
series of tertiary deposits in California, in
the region of the Sierra Nevada marine in
character. But in the interior of the conti
nent is a far more interesting series of cer
tain fresh-water deposits fresh water con
taining a great number of fossil plants and
the most remarkable series of animal deposits
to be found on this continent east of the
Rocky Mountains. There are two species of
rhinoceros, tne elephant, hippine quadrupeds,
(he sabre-too tn cat, wnose tooth was in one
specimen eight inches beyond the jaw, the
most formidable tooth or any animal of which
we have any knowledge. These deposits of
the West were formed in fresh-water basins,
and yet now there are almost no fresh water
basins in that region.
Some slight idea of the nature of these de
posits may be formed from the fact that al
most everybody going to uainornia talks about
chalk deposits. Following in the old emigrant
train, you will see various Blabs or this chalk
like earth set np for grave-etones. These in
f usorial beds are portions of the fresh water
deposits. On the western side of the Rooky
Mountains the deposits are similar, and are
rich in diatomes. The fauna are interesting.
On the east side of the Rocky Mountains the
tertiary deposits have been but little studied,
altnougn x nave paid some attention to them,
There are many alterations. The rivers run
through a country comparatively level, and
have cut down through the bottom of broad
valleys, forming canons, whose walls are 1200
to 2000 feet high, and nearly vertical. The
material entering into the deposits show vol
canic proximity. From them you can get an
idea of the material thrown down in these
ancient lakes. The conclusion of this is that
on all these sides of the Rocky Mountains
there were found extensive sheets of tertiary
deposits full of the most interesting fauna on
this continent. These lakes covered an area
many times greater than our present fresh
water lakes. They characterize a time in the
history of this continent when it was exceed
ingly well watered, and contain a fauna richer
than any other portion of the world at the
present time, and almost all of them extinct
The climate indioated by the plants and ani
mals was sub-tropical, and fern plants grew
in great abundance from the Upper Missouri
even beyond tne British line, and Cora oov
ered all the northern part of the continent, so
that men lived ana vegetation luxuriated even
in Greenland, bait Lake represents only a
series of such lakes anciently fresh, but be
coming salt because oi want of drainage. . A
ercRt wary erI. Jotes and jdJs&Uuo risiws were
here.' The drainage now by the Klamath and
other rivers is very great and shows that it
has been greatly improved.
Tb editor of the Atlanta (Ga.) Intelligencer
fays that he held conversations with many gen
tlemen attending the Cobb County Fair, and
that all agreed In saying that they were afraid
tbey had planted "a little too much cotton,"
and not enoneh grain. Some planters are sell
ing tbeir coming cotton crop even now, for
supplies to carry them through the year. .
A roan In York county, Me., complained of
A widow for badly beating him because he drove
his team across a platform she had laid to ac
commodate picnic fruests at a beach. He as
serted that a big dog held him behind while she
belabored him in front, bat notwithstanding
these grievances tbe jury upheld the woraao,
and declared her action to have been Justifiable.
The Missouri Republican State Committee
has issued an address directing the election of
Congressional district, county, and township
committees, in accordance with the plan of
orioni.ntion adopted by the Republicans of the
State in 1608, to which tbey were largely In
debted for tbeir magnificent victory in that year.
Tbe plan provided for the election of these
committees every two years.

tific expedition to Brazil, the party to consist of
"the most promising young men" at Cornoll,
and to be under the leadership of Professor
llartt, who has twice visited the country with
Professor Agassi.. Their operations will be in
tbe Amazonian Valley and on the coast south
ward to Rabin. Tbe aid of the Brazilian autho
rities has been generously extended, and many
friends along tbe Brazilian coast arc ready to do
all in their power to help it. The funds lor the
