TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY", JUNE 4, 1870. 5 TEE MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE COM PANY OF NEW YORK. The following documents spc;ik for them selves, and they demonstrate In the most satis factory manner that the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York is well managed, nnd Is in every way worthy of the confidence of the public. The report of Superintendent George W. Miller gives a full and exact state ment of the status of the company. Ho repre sents that the assets are of the highest order of securities, that they have been safely kept, and that by the strictest scrutiny into tho manage ment of the company for the past sixteen or Beventeen years, during which a vast amount of business has been done, not one dollar is disco vered to have been lost by tho embezzlement, defalcation, or breach of trust of any officer or trustee: To tub Policy Holders of thk Mutual Lifb Insuhancb Company of New York. It Is doubtless known to many of our assured that for some time past rumors prejudicial to the management of this company have been in cir culation. George W. Miller, Esq., Superintendent of the Insurance Department of the State of New Xork, has Just completed bis investigation of the charges preferred against this Company (none of which have been sustained) and of the ueneral condition of its affairs. His report, from which the subjoined extracts are taken, will be distributed among the policy holders so boor as it can bo printed, and should be carefully read by all. F. RATCiironn Starr, General Agent. Philadelphia, June 4, 1870. EXTRACTS FROM RKl'OhT. "Every effort has been made to make the investi gation thororgh and complete. It has been con t nuefl through a period of about three months. Over six hundred foolscap pages of testimony have been taken, and the books of every description, as well as the assets of the company, have been care fully examined." Having undertaken the examination of the af fairs of this great Company (besides the special charges already considered), I have continued It until by a personal inspection of the assets, and a general Investigation of the methods of business, as well as a review of the history of the Company, I feel prepared to declare, as my opinion, that the condition and standing of the Mutual Life Insur ance Company of New York is such as entitles it to the confidence of the pub'lcand the high position it has so long cccup e 1 ; that It has acquired this leading and magniucent position is most unques tionably in a great measure due to the efficiency, ability, and fidelity of those intrusted with its management. It was organized by special act In 1342, and was the 11 rat Mutual Life Insurance Com pany of this State. Tho present chief executive nicer, Mr. Frederick S. Winston, became its .presi dent in 1853, at which time the assets oi the company amounted to 2,ois,T7C. The number of policies then in force was C773, Insuring the amount of $17,566,133. On the 1st of January, 1970, the assets of the company had .increased the enor mous sum of 135,579,109. The number of rnllcies then la force was 03,072, Insuring $230,94? 02. The in come of the company for the year 1369 was about 115,000,000. Of the assets, over 27,ooo,ooo are in vested In bonds and mortgages upon real estate, all, except about 12,000,000 in New Jersey, being upon real estate situate In this State. The assets of the company were found to correspond with Us annual statement thereof made to the Insurance de partment. They are of the highest order of securities, and have been safely kept. It Is a fact wo t u of remark that the strictest scrutiny into the management of this company during the past sixteen or scveateen years, during which such a vast amount of business has been done, and such Immense sums of money have been received and In vested, not one dollar is discovered to have been lost by the embezzlement, defalcation, or breach of trust of any officer or trustee. It Is perhaps not strange that such success should excite not only generous rivalry In this great field of business enterprise, but also same jealousy as well as personal ani mosities and criticisms. It is to be regretted that in any case the ortlcers or agents of one company should resort to the vilification of another com pany or its officers, with a view to advancing the interests of their own company or themselves. If there are charges affecting the standing of a com pany, or the legality of its management, seriously made upon prima facie, reasonable grounds to the Superintendent, be will, as in this case, deem it his duty as soon as practicable to investigate them. In making these remarks, no reference is had to any company or person la particular. They are merely aimed generally at what I have conceived to be a pernicious practice. 'In concluding this report, I would say that I en tered upon this examination certainly not predis posed to extend any special favor to the Company, but fully determined to probe to the bottom all com plaints, and, so far as I was able, to mete out equal and exait justice. This, to the best of my ability, I have done. Personal examinations of the art airs of companies will be more frequent unler the present than they were under the late administration of the Insurance Department. It will be gratifying if those examinations disclose no greater Irregularities nor cause more serious apprehensions for the future companies examined than this has done. If any of our Life Insurance Companies are sound and relia ble, the Mutual Life must be one of them. "In language which I have before used, I will only add, my examination has satisfied me that the Company has been managed with peculiar ability and Integrity, and that Its condition Is eminently SOUnd.
