Hereafter the Rev. Mr. Smytho Is to preach
on Sunday at Irving Hall, where ho intends to
Bet up a new church. Tbo principal, indeed the
only, tenet of the church is that any one may
belong to it who has been baptized and believes
in the divinity of the Saviour. It is to be a
church where plain drinks and fancy drinks are
Allowable, and where no brother has the right to
frame a teetotal or excise law for any other
brother. "Whatever you do, drink fair," is the
motto of Mr. Smytho no less than of Betsey
Trig. Fairness in drink with him means the
right to swallow everything you want at all
times, Sundays not excepted. Since ho was
kicked out by his old congregation, his sermons
have been attended by larger crowds than ever.
Feople want to see the man who had the auda
city to set ordinary rules at defiance. This auda
city is of such a nature that if Mr. Smythe saw
fit he would decorate the communion-table
with mint-juleps and administer baptism la Kls
BiDgen or eau de Cologne.
Mr. Beerher's Hnndny.
But not even a big man like Smythe can alto
gether blot Bcccher from public memory. He
Is always doing or saying something to be re
membered. It may be true that he loves popu
larity for its own sake, but I don't believe he
strives after the eccentric for the mere purpose
Of enjoying notoriety. His recommendations
for the Sabbath are his chief sins in the opinion
of Ms enemies. What are these recommenda
tions? He evidently believes that the Sabbath
was made for man, not man for the Sabbath;
and thinks that we have a right to modify it to
a very liberal degree. The opinions he pro
mulgated only last Sunday have given great
offense, even to some of his friends. By re
luming a jocular answer to a member of the
congregation who invited his attention to a
patent fastener for blinds, he countenanced
laughter in church. By announcing that n
thing should ever induce him to put his name
to a petition that cars might not run on Sunday,
be countenanced work on the Sabbath day. By
affirming that he would like to see the whole
church as profusely decorated with flowers as
his pulpit was, he countenanced a frivolous ex
penditure of money that might better be given
to the poor. So cry the cavillers. Oh 1 if the
poor only got but a little of that money which
croakers among Christians say ought to be
epent on them, there wonld not be so many
vagrant families sitting homeless and houseless
on the stoops of New York.
Nnperintenrient Jourdan.
The new Superintendent of Police is making
himself a terror to the sergeants in the various
station houses. His plan is to visit them in
person at unexpected hours, such as two or
three in the morning, when those supposed to
be on duty are in reality relaxed in sleep. In
this way he has startled the officials in several
etatlon houses. Yesterday morning ho visited
nearly a dozen before daybreak. In one a ser
geant was stretched upon a table fast asleep. In
another tbe policeman who ehould have been on
duty in the park was snoozing behind a door.
In one or two cases drink had united with sleep
in producing stupefying effects. In all of them
the sudden irruption of the Superintendent cre
ated an immense flutter and stir. He has come
to his work with the determination to create a
BensnMon in that department. He has created it.
He 1 lull of the enthusiasm of a younger man
and luo prudence of an older one. Superintendent
Kennedy may be said to have been blase with
the positive of duty. Perhaps Jourdan will be
when he has seen as much ot it. There is
plenty of work for him to do in the field of
reformation. Tbe overhauling of the station
houses, Important as it is, is only one of the
many necessary Innovations that await him.
But it will probably be some weeks before he
gets through with it. There are worse evils in
them to be remedied than that of sleeping sen
tinels. The Benson.
The amusement season is drawing to a close.
The hour approacheth when the green curtain
Bhall descend to rise no more, until next fall,
upon permanent stock companies. At Booth's
and Wallack's the regular season closes with
next Saturday. At Booth's, "Edwin" provided
last evening a collation for the behoof of New
York critics and editors, and in honor of his pain-law,
Mr. McYlckar. That gentleman com
menced a short engagement as "Peter Pomcroy"
In Mr. Gayler'fl play of Taking the Chances. Mr.
Daly, of the Fifth Avenue Theatre, is said to
have deeply offended, with three exceptions, the
dramatic editors of New York. The cause of
this offense is that on the occasion of the supper
he recently gave at the St. James Hotel, in honor
of the hundredth performance of Frou-Frou,
the only dramatic editors invited were Mr.
"Winter of the Tribune, Mr. Morris Phillips of
the Home Journal, and Mr. Roosevelt of the
Citizen and Bound Table. The question which
the other dramatic editors are said to ask them
selves Is, "Be we dramatic editors, and
Buffer such dishonor ?" Echo answers,
4 'Not If we know ourselves." The snub
bed dramatic editors a portion of
them at least are Bald to have formed a
"ring," the Inviolable resolution of which is not
to visit the Fifth Avenue Theatre upon the first
production of Fernande, and not to bestow apon
that play any notices other than the merest
business necessities demand. By publishing
Mr. Cooney's name as the translator and adapter
of Fernande, the manager hopes to get the
Herald on his side, Mr. Cooney being the chief
theatrieal writer for that celebrated casuist in
art. But in this expectation he will find himself
profoundly mistaken, for the Herald is so afraid
of the possibility of its columns being venally
used by its employes, that probably no notice of
fernande will be permitted by the proprietor to
appear therein. This is the latest newspaper
theatrical chit-chat. Next Monday we are to
have at Niblo's the play of Not Guilty, which
good Mr. Hemphill produced so successfully
ever bo uany months ago at the Walnut Street
Theatre. This is rather late for it to appear in
New York, is it not ?
A Yoanf Mai from the Gauntry.
The countryman in New York is the prover
bial Illustration or greenness and gullibility.
Borne of them, however, are not green and gul
lible. One who was visiting this city on Mon
day afternoon seems to have possessed in an
eminent degree an aptitude for taking his own
part. While standing In front of a dollar store
window on Broadway, between Houston and
Bleecker, his eyes were attracted by a placard
therein, which informed him that articles ou the
south Bide of the store were purchasable for one
dollar, and articles on the north side for two
dollars. His quick eye espied on the north side
a number of articles which seemed extremely
,.wn for two dollars. Among them were seve
ral fine-looking watches. He went in, picked
n nn. examined curiously the case, the glass
h works, the finish, and the whole ticking and
oiiirlD1? ewtemble. It seemed well worth
twelve times that amount; so extracting from his
pocket a roll of greenbacks he shelled out a
two-dollar note, wafted it across the counter to
the attendant clerk, and pocketed the time
piece. , ,
"Hallo!" said the clerk, "you've made a mis
take, sir. That's a five-dollar article."
"I can't help that; it's on the north side of the
store," Bald the countryman, and made for the
door. The clerk followed him, but once outside
the countryman was among a nest of sympa
thizers and got off safely with kls bargain.

The Raw Winds of Early Spring search out the
weaknessosof all who are predisposed to Lung Complaints,
and in consequenoe Colds, Coughs, and Bronchial Dis
orders everywhere prevail. Those who have contracted
Colds should now be especially careful, and not im
prudently wait until by constant coughing they so irritate
and rack their lungs as to bring on themselves some very
serious Pulmonary Affection. Let them rather treat
their symptoms rationally and at once, and by the prompt
use of Dr. Jsyne's Expectorant cure their Colds, and

The Solace of Age. Plantation Bitters is an
agreeable compound of St. Croix Rum the most natri-
uental of all distilled liquors and a variety of tonic,
alterative and anti-bilious vegetable productions, among
which is the most invaluable of invigorators, Oalisaya
bark. Tbe spirituous basis is manufactured by the agents
of the proprietors, from the sugar-cane, on their ewn
leaseheld plantations in the West Indies ; and the Oali
saya bark is gathered and prepared for exportation from
South America by the employes of the firm. Both, there
fore, can be guaranteed to be unadulterated, and of the
finest quality.
For these reasons Plantation Bitters is recommended
as an nneqnaled invigerating cordial foraged persons.
But it has a stronger recommendation than that of the
proprietors, viz. : the testimony of thousands in the de
cline of life who have tested its revivifying properties.
